Gift of Music 2013-14

Post by Niveous »

Okay folks, I am back from my wedding and subsequent honeymoon and subsequent 36th birthday and now I'm ready to jump back into the world of Songfight. And it's November, so all you long term songfighters know what that means. It's time for the organization of our yearly musical Secret Santa: The Gift of Music.

For those new to the GoM, here's a quick breakdown.

1. Post in this thread that you'd like to take part.
2. Post a list 4 songs (not your own songs or SF songs) that you would like to hear someone cover. (Links to the songs are very helpful)
3. On 11/29/13, I collect all the entrant's names and put them in a hat.
4. You are given the name of one of the other entrants.
5. Find their list and pick a song and cover it. Keep it hush hush, this is a Secret Santa.
6. Send the cover to "iamniveous" at Gmail. Deadline is 1/8/14.
7. After the deadline, I will post them all the songs on my website.
8. Holiday joy ensues.

So, who's in?

4pm - The Clouds

and here is the studio version of this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntE4WaCGHU4

Horror Movie - Skyhooks

Happy Man - The Sunnyboys

Spooky. Sunnyboys are one of my favourite all-time bands. But just noticed on this clip that lead singer Jeremy Oxley - a huge influence on me - has a guitar that looks exactly the same as mine! Must have been a subliminal choice when I bought mine.

Everyday Formula - Regurgitator

I've been thinking about the GOM. So yes, count me in. This year I am submitting GUILTY PLEASURE SONGS. If you ask me after the GOM is over if I like these songs I may deny it.

Marina and the Diamonds - I Am Not A Robot

Night Ranger - Don't Tell Me You Love Me

Rick Springfield - I've Done Everything For You

Cock Robin - The Promise You Made
Bringin' the stink since 2006.

Oh yeah, one of my favorite side fights here on the mighty Song Fight! It's so nice to give as well as receive. I should be done with my home projects soon (before Thanksgiving is my unofficial deadline) so I can get back into making glorious moozok.

Here are my picks:
1. J. Roddy Waltson and the Business - Heavy Bells

2. Purling Hiss - Lolita

3. Pixies - Indie Cindy

4. J. Roddy Waltson and the Business - Take it as it comes

OK, here are my four picks from really obscure bands no one has ever heard of:

…wait, I don’t know any bands no one has heard of. I guess I’m one of those people that has never heard of any of them.

Tell you what, I’m gonna pick four songs that led to four of my all-time favorite covers. I will post links to both for each pick.

“Got The Time” - Joe Jackson (cover by Anthrax)
“Alone Again Or” - Love (cover by the Damned)
“Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” - Rod Stewart (cover by Revolting Cocks)
“Toccata and Fugue in D Minor” - J.S. Bach (cover by Toy Dolls)

This will almost certainly change, but tonight I am in a reflective mood so -
2013/14 - "Songs my Parents Taught Me" - All these songs I heard first from my parents and continue to temper my otherwise 1979 mentality.

Supertramp - Breakfast in America
This is not a great recording of the album track, but it's the only version I could find that wasn't live and therefore bereft of the harmonies that make it. It was this, or "The Logical Song", but I think the latter would prove a b*stard to re-do, so BiA it is. Unless you want to prove me wrong, of course..
Don Maclean - Vincent
Definitely first song I remember ever weeping to, on hearing. But I was about 6, so it's excusable
Grace Jones - Love is the Drug
Better than the original? I think so but do it like Roxy if you must :)
Jesus and Mary Chain - Just Like Honey
No, really, a true story. My dad came home with the cassette, simply because he "liked the name". It got more play from me than him, but props for giving stuff a go, old man! I prefer late JatMC but to keep with the theme, it will be this.

Be glad you've been spared "Venus and Mars" by Wings and the whole of Elton John's 'Greatest Hits II''. And a whole bunch of really obscure avant-jazz. I fully expect to be stiffed this year.

EDIT: Oh, and always I am only interested in the melody, and its relation to the chords. F**k all that showy arrangement shite.

Hmmm. Told myself I was gonna abstain from GoM after last few times due to a combination of stiffing my giftee (which I felt pretty bad about) and being underwhelmed by my gift (which I also felt like an arsehole about), buuuuut, there are some awesome tunes named here, so fuck it, I'm in. Here's my ill-considered drunken choices...

I very nearly picked that one due to Joe Jackson's cover.

Oh, and he covered that Louis Jordan tune too.

Hello! This all sounds wunderbar and I am eager to officially participate in my first SongFight. I'll try to pick a few songs that someone might actually want to cover. Of course, maybe the point is that they're songs that I would like to hear someone else cover. That changes things.

Here are my four. Feel free to "mess them up":

1. Camera Obscura - Hey Llloyd, I'm Ready to be Heartbroken

2. Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark

3. The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star

4. Jimmy Gnecco - Mystery

Grazie!

Bloc Party - Waiting for the 7:18

MP3s are zipped up and dropped in a dropbox ---> here.
