Covering random songs from the archive

Post by Lunkhead »

I have an idea for an ongoing, perpetual sidefight. It would revolve around covering random songs from the Song Fight! archive. If you want to participate, post here in this thread. I will then assign you a random song from the archive to cover, using this link:

http://sfjukebox.org/songs?random

Your options then are:
  1. Skip that song
    • I will assign you a new random song
    • for every three six songs you skip before submitting a cover you will lose a half a point
    • for your first time participating, though, you get three free skips before your skips start counting toward a penalty
    • if you get assigned a song you've already covered, you may skip it for free if you want (will not count toward skip penalty)
    • if you get assigned one of your own songs (or one by one of your bands, etc.), you may skip it for free if you want (will not count toward skip penalty)
  2. Cover the song
    • post your cover here to the boards
    • receive one point
    • if you complete and post your cover within 24 hours, you get a half point bonus
Chumpy Bonus: if your song doesn't have lyrics in the lyrics archive, and you add them, you get a half point bonus. Include a link to your post with the lyrics in your post with your song. (Instrumentals do not qualify for this bonus.)

DJRD Live Bonus: if you submit a live performance, you get a half point bonus.
DJRD Travel Bonus: if you travel out of your home town to record your cover, you get a half point bonus.

SomeSongs Bonus: if you post your cover on SomeSongs, you get half a point bonus (contact me if you need help getting in to your old SomeSongs account, if you had one)
SoundCloud Bonus: if you post your cover on SoundCloud, you get half a point bonus (SomeSongs isn't working and probably won't get fixed)

Pigfarmer Jr Bonus: If you cover a song someone was assigned but didn't cover, you get a half point bonus

Song Fight Live 2020 Bonus: If you record a video of your cover to be used in Song Fight Live 2020, you get one bonus point!

I will maintain a leader board here:

https://songfight.org/rsfc/

I'm open to tweaking the rules a bit but I'd like to keep it simple.

Any takers?

I like this idea but also, as someone who has listened to the whole archive, I know what horrors lie in there as well. I will consider taking this challenge.

Ha ha. The horrors that lurk are part of the "fun". ;) Also when I picked a random song for myself to start off, I got this one. It's not necessarily a horror like Lightning Ear Fart or something but it's a stupid song about nose hairs even though the title was "It Belongs to Me":

http://sfjukebox.org/songs/it_belongs_t ... apositives

That was what made me think of the idea of skips. I didn't want it to be only about covering "good" songs though so I thought of the skip penalty idea.

OK Niv, you're up first, this is what came up for you on my first try:

http://sfjukebox.org/songs/mumbojumbo/B ... 20Ensemble

I think maybe roymond already covered this one...? If so we can discuss if we want to add a rule about getting a free skip if there is a "prominent" enough existing cover of a song in the community already.

Also, we don't have to go one person at a time with this, if you want to jump in I will assign songs to as many people as want to make covers.

Ha ha ha. Yes, you may wind up covering a shitty song. But that's part of the fun! Don't be a bunch of wimps! :P

New sub-rule, you get a free skip if you made the song that comes up, or were involved in making the song that comes up. (E.g. if I get a Berkeley Social Scene song.)

I want to do the assignments so that each one is posted publicly, for an audit trail about skips, 24 submissions, etc. ;)

Anyway, here's yours, enjoy!

Ha! Sounds like fun... I would like to participate! HIT ME!
Maybe an extra challenge could be 'cover [random song] in the style of a [random artist]'... or maybe that's something for another sidefight...

I was highly dubious of this challenge until I listened to Ben Foxworthy's Evil April, which is awesome and ripe for cover. It's pretty rough, G&G, but is an epic story song with great lyrics, and it's about the Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles. Paraphrasing one reviewer, "more nerdy than nerdcore". This feels more curated than random to me, but whateves, I can't wait to hear the cover.

OK, new rule, thanks to Chumpy:

- half a point bonus for transcribing your song's lyrics in the lyrics archive thread for that fight, if they are not there yet (bonus point to be granted when cover is finished)

Heh, Cygnet got lucky. I'm a bit scared of this challenge because I can't reverse engineer music to save my life. I have some software that can pick out chords from recordings, but it's not great. I transcribed the lyrics because I really like them, and want to play along.

im so bored and I have 45 minutes. I don't think you're online to assign me a song. This process needs to be automated perhaps?

Figuring out lyrics on the random songs I've listened to has been an issue.
Another issue is the 24 hour bonus. I know I'm not going to have any more free time until 1930 GMT. If you post between now 0720 GMT I will lose up to 12 hours of the 24.Another reason to automate?

But I've used up 10 of my minutes. Sigh.
