The Song Fight Bulletin Board

One of my co-workers handed me the first book yesterday out of the blue. Does this book really live up to all the hype? Should I move it up my already stacked book queue?

Yes, it is a good book. If you've seen the first season on HBO already there isn't much new information in there. I noticed a couple of things I hadn't picked up from the TV show, but the show is almost an exact copy of the book.

I have read them all. The second and third books are fantastic, the fourth informative, not boring, but wandery and the fifth good fun. I couldn't believe I got into that kind of thing, fantasy being low on my list of reading faves, but I enjoyed the series very much. I don't have HBO, but am watching the 2nd season on disc. Definitely worth the time, if that stuff's your bag.

Yes the first season was basically the same as the first book - but show is way off track now.

One of the few instances where the TV show is far superior to the books.
The books tell a great story - but they are a bit clunky to read, and could do with some pretty serious editing and culling.

Yeah the show was always a bit different from the books but then in season 5 it diverged a lot and season 6 is being made up entirely by HBO writers.

I've neither read nor watched but I've heard a lot of praise for the books and complaints about where the show screws with the things the books were praised for (especially when it comes to representation of women and sexual agency thereof, as well as the use of rape as a bludgeony checkboxed plot-point).
