BoJack Horseman

Post by Lunkhead »

I'd been meaning to check out this show, then Ken mentioned it recently and I finally started watching it. It's damn funny. Will Arnett is amazing, and the writing, art, and music are all excellent as well. I'm already nearing the end of season 2 after just watching for a week, although, that may be more a statement about me right now than about the quality of this show... Anyway, if you have Netflix check it out.

I love that show. It takes 3 episodes to get going but when it does, it's a funny and surprisingly emotional show.

I disagree, it really only took me one, but in all fairness, I think you're right that it takes at least two. I just happen to be a fan of these voice actors and was hooked from the beginning. (I love Will Arnett, Amy Sedaris, & who doesn't like Aaron Paul?)

It's good stuff, man. Check it out and be disappointed when you run out of episodes and have to wait for the next season.

The cast is great, I am fans of theirs from before watching this. I did need a couple episodes to get really hooked, myself. I just finished season 2 and only then realized that season 3 doesn't come up till July 17th. I'm jonesing for more BoJack.

I would recommend it, fluffy. I also was lukewarm on it until episode 3, or maybe even 4. But after it finds its stride, it becomes probably the best show I know of about handling chronic depression and inadequacy issues. "Unlikable protagonist" is not usually a category that gets me excited, but the show invests so much heart and energy into explaining why BoJack is the way he is, and why he does the horrible self-destructive things he does, that I find myself rooting for him to overcome it all and achieve something like self-actualization.

Plus, there's like thousands of freeze-frame animal pun jokes. They're everywhere.

Oh, fabulous show. Am I missing something? I binge-watched this on Netflix at least a year ago (seasons 1, 2 and Christmas special) and didn't think twice that US people hadn't seen it at the same time? Definitely finished season 2 last August while in France (la-di-da)? Is this a region thing?

Netflix has made a big deal about releasing their original programming at the same time everywhere, as opposed to a lot of shows that force restrictions on when content can be made available in which regions. So yes, we all got access to this show at the same time.

Unlike most of Netflix's shows so far, BoJack has been kind of a sleeper hit. When it first came out, I didn't think it looked like the kind of thing I would enjoy, but a couple of well-written reviews changed my mind and convinced me to give it a shot late last year, about three months after they put season 2 up (right around the time my son was born - we watched a lot of TV around then). I would imagine it's sort of similar for a lot of viewers. Reed Hastings (the CEO of Netflix) has said that BoJack is his favorite Netflix Original Series, so it stands to reason that they're willing to hunker down for a long-term charm offensive, slowly winning over viewers like myself and Sam, who were initially dismissive.

Oh yeah I finally got into this show. Everyone was right, episode 3 is where it stuck.

Also, relevant: the title theme is on Song Exploder.

So, season 3. It was really good! I don't think it was nearly as funny as the previous seasons though. The underwater episode though was my favorite episode of the series. Not funny but very moving and artful, incredible sound and animation. It seemed like the writers were really showing off their skill with internal references and with planting the seed of a joke early on and then letting it grow and develop over a long time. One joke in particular has a crazy long time until the payoff, so when they finally deliver on it I found it really satisfying and hilarious. My only complaint about this season was it was too short! Can't wait for season 4, which will be happening, apparently.

I hope Songexploder song explodes Grouplove's closing titles theme as well. That would be awesome!

Nobody ever chimed in about season 4. Some emotional gut punches in those storylines. Yikes. Still amazing though.

I'm working through season 4 at the moment. There hasn't been a peak to match the underwater episode from season 3 yet but it's brilliant stuff. Probably my favourite show currently "airing", if I can still use that word in our digital age.

They don't do anything like that episode, but, there are other episodes that I would say have similar level of impact in different ways, particularly "Stupid Piece of Shit" and all the stuff about Bojack's family's backstory.

The episode told from the perspective of Princess Carolyn's descendant did a pretty good job of shattering my heart.

But, you know, in a good way.

Side note, apparently a bunch of people at my work knew and had played music with Ralph Carney, part of the uncle/nephew duo (with Patrick Carney of the Black Keys) responsible for the opening credits music. He passed last year and in the opening credits now you can see a little memoriam to him on the TV in the background in Bojack's house. Apparently he had been very active and beloved in the SF music scene for a very long time.
