Public Access

Post by Paco Del Stinko »

This may not sound like high aspirations, but I've long wanted to have a show on public access TV. Just the idea that any schmoe can do it, is greatly appealing to me. There were a couple shows I used to watch in Albuquerque when I bumped into them, and when I lived in New Hampshire I would often watch the town meeting. I've been on my Massachusetts home town TV a few years back in a battle of the bands. That was a blast.

Anyway, this could be the year I go down and get the lessons they require you to take on how to run the equipment and all that. All I know is that I would have a music based show, with perhaps some video sketches mixed in and I would love to have a SongFight! feature. We'll see.

Anyone done/doing/want to do something like this?

That sounds really cool! It seems that a lot of people have gone the youtube route with there public access type shows.
A local guitar teacher in my area named Mark Seal had a public access show for a while. I know a ton of people around here that got lessons from him through the years. He'd have random guests on and stuff.

While YouTube has killed the video star, there's something about producing a live show in a TV studio that's very rad. When I lived in Westchester I had a driver (late nights at the job in Manhattan required a car service home) who had a head-banger interview show on public access. They'd sit around on stools answering his questions about a gig with "yeah, it was pretty great" from behind their hair, or "that was awesome when John fell off the stage...huh huh..." Very Beavis and Butt-head on downers. It was so funny and occasionally, to fill time, he'd air his own videos of his cat showing off its still live catch, then eating it.

I spent a year writing a weekly column for the Kiribati national newspaper, Te Uekera - called "Rob's Fish of the Week". It was a combination of biological facts, philosophical musings and seafood recipes.

I'd like to think it would translate to television.

"Rob" was very much a nascent version of "Caravan Ray". The premise was, he was an eccentric billionaire who lived on a luxury yacht somewhere in the Central Pacific with a bevy of dusky maidens - and a unnatural obsession for fish. His column was very popular. (I-Kiribati people love their fish).

The idea came from my marine biologist friend. Who's name happened to be 'Rob'.

In your boomerang culture, is a dusky maiden dark skinned or dim-witted?

Well, I reckon if anything good comes of it, it could end up on Youtube anyway. One of the great things to come out of allowing cable companies in your town was that they have to do this. I don't have a grand plan, but I will do this.

I'm a little weirded out at the thought of you in that much prosthetic makeup, but I'd love to hear you do that t- t- t- trademark stutter!

I'm not saying I would do a Max Headroom impersonation. I'd have my own take on it.

If you watched Albuquerque Public Access, then surely you knew Naked Don.

Ha! He was excellent, and I'd see him on the bus occasionally. I lived in ABQ twice: 1992-93 and 1994-97. My mom and sister still live there, but it's been a while since I've been. I applied to UNM in '94 and took the SATs. My English and writing scores were above average, science and math below. They told me to go to TVI Community to see if I could do college level work. I loved it there and went for two years before withdrawing to get a job.

I used to watch Ask Otto, Loco For Christ, and some weird show where fat people sat around and played music on a boom box. Plus assorted other stuff. I mean, hey, only so much TV, ya know?

ABQ has its faults, but I think it's great, all in all.
