What's your vocal range?

Post by fluffy »

It's always interesting to see how physically capable you are.

Right now (after drinking a bunch of beer) I go from E3 to C6, which is nearly 3 octaves. (Note that in this video the octave starts at C, so A2 is higher than C2.)

Start by singing as low as you can, and figure out which note it is. Then raise your pitch until you can't raise it any higher, while tracking the note with an instrument. Then keep track of how many octaves you were able to go.

I think my top note used to be a lot higher than my current one is, but my overall range is also wider, so on the whole that's a good thing, I guess. This is what comes from me pushing myself to sing better and with a wider range rather than just writing my songs to fit in my existing limited one.

I voted for "I AM A ROBOT WITH A MONOTONIC VOICE BLEEP BLORP" because it made me grin. :D

I don't know my range, but I know I can't go real low and I can't go too high. So......2.5?

I have no idea - but when I performed in HMS Pinafore a few years ago - I was in the bass section of the chorus. And I also use falsetto a lot for backing vocals - so I suppose there is a pretty big gap between those. Actually hitting the notes I want to hit though is another matter entirely.

Okay, fine, I just posted a video at the top which should make it easier for your lazy bones to figure it out for actual.

Okay, C3 to A5? Not sure how that equates to the pole poll you erected.

That's closest to 2.5 octaves. Come to think of it, my results were closer to 2.5 than to 3 as well (E is closer to G than C).

Although the scale on that video is a little wonky, because the second part starts at a lower note than the first part. I'd rather if it started at the same note both times since otherwise it's easy to screw up and start in a different octave when you sing along and thus add or subtract an octave.

I can hit G5 before going falsetto, but it isn't all that pretty. I've got at least an octave up in falsetto afterwards. Going low, I dunno. do you call it G1 or just G?

I'm totally counting falsetto in my range. And it's still G1 - at least in Logic the note scale goes all the way down to like G-3 or something.

My range has changed since I last checked with your vid above. I think it's because my testies finally dropped. They touch the water now when I sit on the throne. I'm a solid 3 now.

Well, I surprised myself with how awful I sound hitting both my lowest and highest notes. *mental note to self: start practicing singing*

I hit the high notes pretty good now. My wife yelled from the other room saying she thought there was a little girl outside screaming for help. :x
....I probably shouldn't have been using the word help to test my octave range.

I've been seeing a voice coach for a while to try to get a more feminine-sounding voice, and my range is back to only 2.5 octaves, but the top end is higher than it used to be, so that's nice. I definitely can't do the Goatfucker voice anymore.

Congrats on the voice work. I don't know what the Goatfucker voice is, but wild goats can't stop me from googling it. :P

Back in the day (like, 20 years ago) I entered some stupid troll songs under that name. They aren't very good. Anyway sometimes I'd push my voice to the very bottom of my vocal range as part of it. People always thought it was a filter but that was totally just me.

I think the only time Goatfucker actually sang was on a... really bad cover of a PrayForMojo song, which I'm sure has been lost to the sands of time. All for the best, really.

Thanks for clearing that up. I did google Goatfucker and it was all over the place from heavy metal to comic stuff.
Bro tip: When Googling Goatfucker DO NOT click images. :?

I have a beautiful shower vibrato. I get all happy at how good I sound, so I get out and get the mic fired up and let my beautiful voice rip. Except it sounds like when I get up in the middle of the night and accidentally step on the cat. :(

I sound like an alley cat in heat, so I use Utau to sing for me.
It's hereditary, since family lore is as soon as I could put a sentence together was "Mommy stop singing. It hurts my ears."
"A pounding beat that makes me pump fist, that makes me smile like I've just been kissed."
