Song Fight Live: Weird & Wired August 9-10 in AUSTIN, TEXAS!

Post by JonPorobil »

Alright, folks, I hope nobody thinks it impolitic for me to just declare victory here. The Live Show this year will be in my adoptive home town of Austin!

Song Fight Live! Weird & Wired
August 9-10, 2013
Kick Butt Coffee, Music, and Booze
5775 Airport Blvd
Austin, TX 78752

What we need ASAP is a date. Normally, the location would have been settled and the date picked out much sooner than this, so here's the deal: I can't afford to ask everyone what their top-three choices are and take everyone's preferences into consideration. The window of time is too narrow for that. So instead, I'm going to name five weekends, and I need you all to tell me which ones you absolutely, positively cannot do. I'm talking about some kind of prior commitment that would force you to sit out this Live show if there were a conflict.

The show will be two days, a Friday night and a Saturday night. The event will happen in the month of August. That gives us five possible choices.

August 2-3
August 9-10
August 16-17
August 23-24
August 30-31

Again, chime in if one or more of these weekends is impossible for you. I don't want to pick a date that will exclude people, if I can avoid it.

Other things that need planning...
Please drop me a line or a comment in this thread if you're interested in attending. I don't need hard commitments yet, but a rough head count would be useful to have.
I'll be posting some things like local amenities, hospitality, and other useful information for travelers, just as soon as I've nailed down the dates and secured our venues. This stuff will happen fast, so watch this space for updates!
Spud and/or JB, what would it take to get a custom site for this event set up somewhere on the Song Fight Network and a link to that page posted on songfight.org?
Any questions, comments, concerns? Please let me know and I'll do my best to address it for you. You can reach me here on the board, private message, the Song Fight IRC room, or at the e-mail address trickyhipster (at) gmail (dot) com. The chat room is especially great for productive back-and-forth, so I'm spending more time in there lately.

Also, names?

RangerDenni suggested Hipsters & Humidity, and I think that's the one to beat.
A minor variant on that, I also like Hippies and Hipsters.
Getting away from the hipster theme, it could be called Bats & Barflies.

Uh... Something with "Weird" in it?
I don't know, truth be told I'm not very good with these. If we don't have a title by the time I'm ready to start hanging up promotional posters, I'll default to "Hipsters & Humidity."

Sounds good, I'll do my best to be there, and maybe bring Erin along too if she can make it.

I'd love to come to Austin but August probably won't happen due to family stuff. Don't let that stop anything, of course. Having been largely unemployed this year leaves discressionary spending at a minimum, though I do have tons of miles...in any case, first week is out.

Duly noted. I'll avoid that first weekend if possible. Thanks, and I hope you can find a way to make it work!

Right now, I have to say the odds of me attending this year are pretty slim, but earlier would be better for me and the last weekend would be the worst.

Whichever weekend will not be scorching hot?
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

So that's a "no" to the outdoor venue, then, right? :P

It's not the heat that's a problem, it's the humidity. That and the giant, ravenous mosquitos.

I thought Texas has this glorious "dry heat" that everyone raves about.

That was certainly my experience when I last went to Texas. I loved the weather. It was hot but you didn't feel sweaty and sticky all the time. But I guess the locals have a much better gauge of the true Texas weather experience.

PS- Texas Weather Experience sounds like the name for one hell of a prog rock band.

Parts of Texas have fairly low humidity and are somewhat tolerable during the summer. Sadly, the "Hill Country" around Austin is not among them. You can probably look forward to highs in the low 100s, and it will feel that hot due to the humidity.

Niveous, last time you visited Texas, where did you stay?

Yep, they're a little drier than we are. We get persistent wind from the Gulf Coast, so we wind up getting the exact same weather as Houston and New Orleans, but with a two or three day delay. Blah.

Don't worry, I was joking about the outdoor venue. All but one of the spaces I'm considering are indoors and air-conditioned. The outdoor one is pretty much a last-resort solution.

Erm, I mean, the weather is awesome! It rains ice cream! When you get off the plane, a hipster hands you a dollar and sings a song for you!

All right, folks, you know the drill. You come for the music, and Song Fight delivers.
