Song Fight Live: Weird & Wired musician exchange!

Post by JonPorobil »

Those of us who are going to this summer's awesome Song Fight Live event here in Austin are probably already thinking about our sets and how we'd like to play them. And that means figuring out who's going to be in your band.

As usual, I'm happy to play piano and/or keyboards for anyone who wishes to use my services. My finger should be adequately healed enough by then for me to play stringed instruments, but you might want to make me your course of last resort for that.

I'm going to want, at bare minimum, a drummer and a bassist. Possibly also a guitarist and maybe a second keyboardist as well. Any takers?

See you all there! It's going to rock!

The chances of my appearance at the show are getting better by the day. Would anyone be willing to be a part of the Niveous performance?

Thanks Jon. I don't know what I need just yet. I'm in the midst of working on a new album so that will affect a lot of it. I'm just seeing what's out there right now.

As usual, I can offer up my services as a guitar/bass/mandolin player as needs dictate. I can also hit things (as long as they are not actual drums), throw stuff around the stage, yell into microphones, or dance like a buffoon if anyone would desire those activities.

I have not decided on an arrangement for my set, but I suspect I will be on the prowl for a few brave souls who can make me sound like I know what I am doing.

Jon Eric - I think I remember the songs we played in New York; I could learn a few newer ones as well if you need a guitarist or bassist.

Niv - I don't know how to play any of your songs, but I'd be more than happy to learn.

Yes, I will definitely want your assistance. There will be some songs that you've played with me before, which will surely help.

Also, folks, you're going to need to know this for your setlists: You've got about 20 Minutes. I'll be forgiving and try not to have to pull out the shepherd's cane on anyone, but that's your ballpark figure.

Wow, these threads get so quiet so quickly. Jon, you may have to teach your wife to play bass the way things are going. :P

That's pretty good. We probably have some leeway. A little quick fuzzy math, if we have 16 sets (we currently have 10 + a live fight), each of 20 minutes with a 10 minute strike/setup in between, that's still 480 minutes and we've got the stage for 600 minutes (not counting the hour for setup at the start of the night or the hour for strike at the end). (Our max is 20 sets using that fuzzy math)

If we start getting closer to the show date (less than 2 months to go) and we find we still have a heap of space, I say we put together a Songfight Cover Band that does songs of bands that couldn't make it to the show.

Jeff, Frank, and I would like to do back-to-back-to-back sets. This will eliminate the need for strike and reset. But if there is extra time available for us to do our thing (which is going to be, uh, pretty cool), we will gladly accept it.

Unless we suddenly get a half-dozen more people to RSVP at once, we'll be plenty flexible on time.

Plus, c'mon, it's you guys. I'm not gonna say no to you. :P

You did a great job last year, I'd be happy to have you on board again. I think I'm only arranging about half of my set to include bass...I'm shooting to get charts out to everyone this weekend.

I'm still figuring out what songs I'm playing but I'm sure I need a guitarist (all acoustic, fairly easy stuff). And it would be cool to have a bassist. My songs don't generally have bass in the recordings but it would be good to add some to the live versions just to fill the mix.

A couple of my tunes will be open-invitation for solos. E or A 12-bar or similar. Don't suck.

Tomorrow afternoon, I'm buying strings for my instruments.

Will anyone need the ukulele, banjo, or mandolin?

I'm gonna be pretty open, moody and atmospheric...if anyone wants to join in sonic chemistry on stage Friday night, please let me know. I could use some theramin, blue harp and slide guitar with delay. Loops of crickets and whatever weird ass indigenous Texan critters you might have are also welcome. Hell, it's Weird & Wired for heaven's sake!
