There is a veto, but it's all or nothing on a bill (i.e. no line item veto). The veto can be overruled by the legislature with a larger majority.
The power the President has is kind of scary especially when the current one seems to think he can overstep his bounds all the damn time.

Just back from the polls, and was glad to see it packed. I live in a small town, but I was there at 10:00, so I think that's probably a good sign for a strong turnout.

I just went over my ballot info and I think I have about 50 different people/measures/propositions/etc. that I have to vote on! I think we have too much democracy in Berkeley, CA.

I know some Californians who vote against all of them on principle.

In ID we had like... five... or something. one was merely advisory, one was gay marriage and civil unions and contracts, one was regulatory takings, one was... oh, to mandate more education funding. voted against, against, against, for.

Just got back from voting. The folks at the polling place in my little town say that it's been unexpectedly busy all day.

...And on a far more important 7 November event - yesterday was MELBOURNE CUP DAY!!!! - the "Race That Stops The Nation"!

The day everyone becomes a horse expert - and it was a great day for all musically inclined punters having their once-a-year flutter.

I went down the list of starters for any names that caught my fancy - and came up with "POP ROCK" and "DELTA BLUES".

Result:
DELTA BLUES first by a nose ahead POP ROCK!!!!

CARAVAN RAY $158 DOLLARS RICHER! Yeah baby!

8) :D

I voted today. It was a pretty okay turn out, I had to wait in line for a little while. Overall the satisfaction of voting and promise of my favored candidates winning narrowly edges out the joy of knowing after today NO MORE POLITICAL ADS... for awhile at least.

Is it just me having a problem with the accent - or does the slogan for the Democrat Party sound an awful lot like:
A Nude Erection for America?
It would get my vote!

Congratulations USA - you seem to be taking your first steps towards re-entering the civilised world.

There will be frantic activity in Canberra this morning as our Dear Leader Mr Howard (aka - lying rodent) tries now to extricate himself from the messes his "mates" have got us into. The shredders will have been working overnight on any files with 'Iraq' or 'Kyoto' in the titles.

An open letter to the democratic party.

Dear you guys/gals:

Here you go. DON'T MESS THIS UP. One big debacle, and '08 will swing the other way, and hard. It'll be easy for the Republicans to say 'see? Good thing they didn't take control in a Presidential election year'. Make this one count, y'all.

Love, Jim
