I'm in a safe zone. One of my friends had to evacuate his house, but his area is ok. I feel for those that lost their house. All I have to deal with is ash and mess.

I'm OK for now. Waiting to see what happens with the Castaic fire. About 4 years ago a fire that started in that same general vicinity ended up coming within 1/4 mile of my house.

I'm glad to hear that everyone is ok. I still have friends and family out in Simi and I know the fires were really bad in that area 4 years ago. I hope the fires stay away from that (and all) areas.

I wasn't around for the fires 4 years ago, or during the Halloween fire quite a few years back (a fire or legend!), but in elementary school, we lived in Sylmar, at the base of the foothills, and we had a bad brush fire one year. The choppers were flying directly over our house, dropping the red fire retardant stuff on the mountain and picking up water at the reservoir close to our house. The wind, smoke and ashes were the worst part, but the fear that the fire would come too close was ever present. The fire lasted a couple of days but was finally contained.

You all are in my thoughts!

I was trying to explain to some co-workers today what Santa Ana winds are like. I recounted the story of living in Simi, walking to school against the wind and actually being pushed backward. They couldn't really grasp it. Here, if it gets that windy, you better get to the basement because a tornado is coming!

I hope the wind really does die down in the next day or so and the firefighters are able to make some progress.

From the Washington Post this morning:

Mike Martinez brought his family Tuesday night to a KOA campground in Chula Vista, after fleeing as the flames approach their home in nearby Jamul.

"Get what's important to you," Martinez remembers urging his 15-year-old son, Alex. "The first thing he packed was five guitars," the contractor said. "What do you need five guitars for?"

But to Alex the guitars are the legacy of a grandfather who played them and passed his love of music to the boy. "They're important to me," Alex said with a shrug.
