I Heart Nur Ein!

Post by Lunkhead »

Nur Ein is awesome. I'm sad that it only happens once a year, though I don't think I want to participate in it again any time soon. It's really damned long! Once it gets down to the last few rounds it seems like it's more about endurance than songcraft, because everybody who's left can fairly reliably come up with decent stuff under normal circumstances.

Anyway, would the officialdom of Nur Ein be tolerant of folks running somewhat similar elimination tournaments in the future? I enjoyed it so much, I would love to try to run something similary on a smaller scale, in a couple months. I'm thinking there'd be an open qualifying round, then the top 12 entrants as judged by some SongFight! and Nur Ein luminaries would compete in just a few rounds, with maybe a little more time in the rounds (8 days instead of 6 perhaps). I don't want to encroach upon the uniqueness and awesomeness of Nur Ein, though, so if people don't want any other side tournaments, that's OK. Another idea I had would be to do a ladder competition where people get paired off randomly, that way everyone gets to compete in every round.

Anybody else have any thoughts about Nur Ein in general, now that II is almost wrapped up?

I love the idea of a Songfight bracket. Like March Madness. That'd be fun.

I think the name "Nur Ein" has become famous in a way and should not be reused. But, I do like the idea of similar contests. Of course after we all catch our breath from Nur Ein. It's been over a week, and I'm still enjoying my free time and not ready to write, oy.
My thoughts:
#1. Judges with extreme different tastes in music
#2. More time per song
#3. Each song time period has two weekends IE: Title given Friday night and cut off is the second following Monday.
#4. No time sig change challenge. j/k
#5. Don't be so vague with challenges (spell it out for us tards)
#6. This is a maybe: Run a poll for each round as well as Judges. The poll won't count in the eliminations, but rather just for more participation from the members.
#7. Free pizza and beer

I bumped into SongFight! last year, a couple of rounds into Nur Ein I and thought that both were just the best things I'd ever found. I don't think that you'd want to over-do the practice, but maybe making the qualifier rounds be the smaller fights on the side. Like, seasonal qualification rounds for tha annual big one or something. Teams and brackets sound interesting too.
Bringin' the stink since 2006.
