Nur Ein III

Post by Niveous »

I figured we would keep about the same time frame as last year's Nur Ein, with SF Live being in August. So that means it's about that time.

Nur Ein (it's German for "Only One")

* 25 Bands enter into the Nur Ein but in the end, there can be only one winner.

* Each fight will take eight days to complete and will be a challenge of skill, creativity and a battle against time.

* On Day 1, a song title will be named (as chosen by the host and the jury). It will not be a songfight title as the sidefight will run on its own timeframe.

* With every title, there will be non-optional challenge attached. Some of the challenges have included: No guitar, No rhyming, Female vocals.

* The bands will have 5 days to complete the challenge song.

* This year the songs will not be self-hosted. I have enough webspace to host the songs and will be happy to do so.

* After the deadline, the songs will be strung into a podcast or hosted stream that can be enjoyed, while the Jury deliberates.

* Reviews and loud talking is encouraged but the jury will not be swayed (except by large bribes).

* On the 8th day, the jury will make their decision and some fighters will be eliminated. Here's the elimination breakdown:
Stage 0: X bands, X-25 eliminations
Stage 1: 25 bands, 5 eliminations
Stage 2: 20 bands, 5 eliminations
Stage 3: 15 bands, 4 eliminations
Stage 4: 11 bands, 4 eliminations
Stage 5: 7 bands, 3 eliminations
Stage 6: 4 bands, 2 eliminations
Stage 7: 2 bands, the vote of the exiles chooses the winner.
NUR EIN!

* The band with the jury's favorite song gets immunity. Only rounds 1-4 are immunity rounds.

* If the songs are of exceptional quality, we can adjust the amount of eliminations to add extra rounds.

*On that 8th day, after the eliminations are made, the new challenge title is released and the next stage begins.

Got the idea. Cool. Then let's begin. Sign up here to participate in Round Zero, where all are welcome but only 25 make it to the big show.

This year's judges are myself, sp00n, Rabid Garfunkel, Merisan and Puce.

Round Zero would start on April 27th (just like last year) @ 1PM EST.

Projected Dates are as follows:

Round Zero:
Sunday April 27th to Monday May 5th

Round One:
Monday May 5th to Tuesday May 13th

Round Two:
Tuesday May 13th to Wednesday May 21st

Round Three:
Wednesday May 21st to Thursday May 29th

Round Four:
Thursday May 29th to Friday June 6th

Round Five:
Friday June 6th to Saturday June 14th

Round Six:
Saturday June 14th to Sunday June 22nd

Final Round:
Sunday June 22nd to Monday June 30th

I am truly tempted to quit my job and divorce my family to be part of Nur Ein, but alas, I am a wimp.

Frankie's output last year was exceptional. I look forward to hearing everyone's new sounds.

Yay! This is so exciting! Nur Ein rules! You will probably kick yourself for not at least giving this a shot in the preliminary round. That being said, get ready for the ride of your life. Last year we spent 8 straight weeks writing and recording songs, which completely wiped us out. And we didn't even win! So if you have serious aspirations of taking the title, hunker down, clear your calendar, tell your friends and family you're going away for awhile, get your gear/software in order, stock up on caffeinated beverages, etc. I hope you've saved up sick days and trained yourself to be energized and creative on only a few hours sleep a night. ;) Seriously, though, Nur Ein is a ton of fun, and as tough as it was, I'm actually going to miss being a contestant. Being half of a judging unit should be fun, too, though, mu hu ha ha ha ha (evil laugh).

Last years time sig change challenge kicked my ass! I deleted my Brownie Points song for ever. I actually shiver a little anytime someone says brownie and points in the same sentence.
But I'm ready for it this year, "if it is a challenge" this year.

i just have one question about that "female vocals" challenge thing... what if you are not female, and you have no females stored away that you can use? could i just put on some makeup and sing falsetto? ;)

Collaborate with a lady SongFight! participant, or get a female friend or relative to help out, even if they just speak one line or something. If all else fails, try really hard to fool the judges, but that's going to be tough. You've got to meet the challenge, but how you do it and to what degree you embrace the challenge is up to you, it seems like. Just keep in mind that the challenge will be a factor for the judges, to varying degrees depending on the judge. That being said, it doesn't seem like the challenges are designed to eliminate people, just to challenge them (hence the name).

* The band with the jury's favorite song gets immunity. Only rounds 1-4 are immunity rounds.
What is the elimination selection process for the jury? What is the favorite song selection process? Can you give an example (real or hypothetical) where a song would have been eliminated under the elimination decision process, but was saved by being selected as favorite song?

The elimination process:

After all the songs are done, the jury has 3 days in which to listen to the songs. Then they rate the songs from best to worst. Here's an example from last year's Round One:

Judge One
24 Thank Glennny for the Frisbee
23 Bryan Kandel
22 Mr. Lostman
21 Billy's Little Trip
20 Calfborg
19 WreckdoM
18 Merisan
17 Puce
16 Balance Lost/ Balance Regained
15 Paco del Stinko
14 Steve Durand
13 Abominominous
12 Cynthia Size and the @eclectic spOOns
11 The BeWells
10 Frankie Big Face
9 Jim Tyrrell
8 Jolly Roger
7 The Bovine Recyclery
6 Tex Beaumont & the Dirty Hearts
5 Ross Durand
4 Rabid Garfunkel
3 Marcus Kellis
2 Ice 9
1 Sausage Boy

All 5 jurors will give in a list like this and the scores are added together. The lowest scorers are eliminated. The highest scorer is given immunity.

I'm confused: doesn't everyone who is not a lowest scorer get immunity?
