Reviews!

ADAM ADAMANT - As you know, I've liked your songs in this competition, but this isn't very good, I'm afraid. I can "hear" the song you were shooting for, but the performance isn't there.

BRYAN KANDEL - I kind of wish you hadn't told me you wrote and recorded this in two hours. My ears are probably being overly critical as a result. The hurriedness reveals itself most in the lyrics. You are some kind of guitarist, though. Good tempi.

GLENN AND RACHEL - When it gets to the first fast part, your song reminds me of Who'll Stop the Rain by CCR. I like that tempo change more than the second, but you know, this tempo change challenge is really hard! That's a VERY effective break toward the end--very cool. I think this song would grow on me with a few more listens. I already like, but I think I could like like it.

JBB - Oh, whistling. Thee last refuge of a scoundrel. Ooh, fancy picking. This is absolutely beautiful. Great job.

KEN - DAMN, THAT'S LOUD. Okay, much better. That's a great intro/first verse tempo change combo. Ken, this is a great song. I'm not really hearing the lyrics at the moment, but it doesn't really matter because everything else is so awesome. Toward the end, when it gets faster, it becomes less Soundgarden and more Rush, but you can be forgiven. Great electric piano sound.

PACO - I can't say I like this song, but I think it's well done. I see you also went with the slow beat with major 7th chords bridge as well. :)

ROSS DURAND - Same as Paco. I can't really dig this song because of the genre/style, but if I did like this style of music, I would LOVE this. Very effective tempo changes. And Keith Emerson synth solo.

TWSA - This is a song that warrants repeat listening. So much going on, uh...tempo-wise. (I feel like I'm listening to one really long prog rock album this week. Well, what other types of prog rock albums are there? Short ones? Haha. I think not.) Oh, your song is over now. It's fine, but you don't care because you are IMMUNE.

I think Ken or JB will/should win this week. Adam, I'm afraid you are going to be eliminated. I can't really tell who else will go. I feel bad for BLT most of all. To paraphrase The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training, "Let Him Play! Let Him Play! Let Him Play!" (okay, I'm done)

With ADD and BLT out involuntarily, there's only one more person to be eliminated this round right?. Too bad, 'cause those guys bring the rock and would probably have beat the rest of our songs to slimy little song pulps.

I am personally supportive of allowing BLT's song to compete, though it's the NurMeister's call. Nobody wants to win on a technicality, although I know part of the competition is the grind of it. Still and all, I'd rather my song beat your song than my song beat dead air. Which is sometimes questionable, I will acknowledge.

This week I dig Frank's song because there's a lot of lyrics in there and it wasn't too much like Kansas-meets-Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. And also I like Ross's guitar tone. I didn't give everyone an in-depth listen, as it's a somewhat busy workday, but I did listen to them all. The list grows shorter. Round ten will be easy to give full reviews.

A bunch of the other songs are very prog-rocky, which is what we all expected I know, and kind of why I did the whole g&g thing. Thought it might be refreshing amongst the rest, despite the fact that g&g isn't everybody's cup o' tea and might be risky. How-dy. Oh my oh... me. Anybody got a peanut?

Thanks Frank and JB, that makes me feel better. I don't think anyone had anything to worry about with my song, because it is a huge stretch for me and I was really doing things I've never tried befor, so it's iffy at best, I think. The whole tempo change thing had me second guessing my ability as a musician. But it may be a good thing too, because I don't think I've ever sounded gayer in my life singing from a womans perspective in the chorus.
I will never post this song, lol. So you'll have to take my word for it.

See the original post:

http://www.songfight.net/forums/viewtop ... 89#p113089
Stage 4: 11 bands, 4 eliminations
ADD and BLT have defaulted, so that uses up 2 of the 4 eliminations. TWSA is immune. So two entrants who got songs in other than TWSA will be eliminated, as far as I understand things. I could be wrong, though.

It might also be of interest to people that this is the -last chance- to win immunity. If you win round 4, you're immune in round 5. But if you win round 5 you are -not- immune in round 6.

EDIT: Ross, what you're saying seems to match up with the Live Journal posts from last year. I thought Abom had immunity in round 5 for winning round 4, but I guess not. I can't find any mention of it, anyway. Sorry for the misinformation.

EDIT 2: Niveous confirmed via e-mail that his intention was for there to be no immunity in round 5 for the winner of round 4.

Wow, that sucks, BLT. Really sucks...

I hope I do get a chance to record my song - I need to do something to break in my new NTK.

Also FWIW, I think this is totally the coward's way out, and I think I'm lame for avoiding being voted off. But on the other hand, I'm extremely relieved about it too.

I'm bummed that Jefff and BLT didn't get in, and if I somehow make it through this round, I might have to blame them for giving me a free pass. Some nice songs here people, and I'm glad I'm not judging. However, I'd say that Frankie and JB are leading the pack.

I don't think that's correct, I think round four is the last round for which you can be immune. If I recall from precious years. What is the plan niv? It doens't seem to me like anyone should get a free pass to the round of four (in the original Nur Ein I don't think there was even immunity in round four)

EDIT: Cool - thanks for clearing it up.

I got in too late and Niveous disqualified me. Last week it was ok, this week, not.
For the record, I did submit a song with around 25 hours invested. My cable was sporadic in the morning when I got back from a 7:00am gunite shoot and went down on my street until around 12:00. I did go to my neighbors to use their computer, but they all have cable Internet also, so no luck.
I'm surprised to hear you ask what happened.

Oh well, que sera sera.

This is what happened with BLT's elimination:

So, the deadline had passed and we had received all the songs except ADD's and BLT's. ADD posted on the boards saying that he was out. Then I got an e-mail from BLT saying "Give me twenty minutes". I was more than willing since I have basically been giving an hour grace period with the Nur Ein rounds.

The only exception to that previous statement is last round...and that was only because when the deadline arrived, I was on a train and didn't arrive back in Jersey for quite a few hours. I accepted whatever I found in my inbox when I checked it.

So yesterday, I waited the hour and no song. So I waited some more. BLT had told me the story about the gunite (even though I have no clue what a gunite is) and I wanted to give him a chance. Plus, who wants to do an elimination via time crunch. It may be a part of the game but it's an ugly part.

It's already 2 hours since the deadline and there's no song. I had sent all the songs to Lunkhead for FTP'ing and file name adjustments. Lunkhead had it all finished and still no BLT song. I finish putting up all the links on LJ, no BLT song. By that point, I figured it was too late.

Finally BLT's song arrives around 3:20. I tell him that he's out. He asks for consideration. I tell him that the jury will decide. While I'm talking things over with the jury members who are online at the time, BLT posts on the boards that he has been eliminated.

Things at Songfight seldem stress me out. Honestly, that one did. I like Chris alot. He's definitely one of my favorite musicians at SF. But that made me scream WTF. BLT told me that he thought I said the jury has decided. He retracts his post.

By this time, it has already gotten way too messy. I let the decision stand.

JB and Frankie have already expressed "let him play" sentiments. And BLT has requested some compassion because he put a lot of work into the song and there were extraneanous circumstances. I'm not a mean guy and I'm just trying my best to run the Nur Ein the best I can. If the other remaining competitors want his song in then I'll let it in. So, I ask the other remaining competitors how they feel about the situation since they are the ones truly affected if we let the song in.

Niveous, I appreciate the post above. Thank you for that, I was starting to feel hated. I also appreciate the PMs and posts sympathizing with me. That made me really feel part of this community. Thanks guys
Truth is, after listening to the songs this week, mine wouldn't have had a chance, but it would have been nice to be judged to know if there is any part of the song that I should add to my bag of tricks for future musical endeavors. Bouncing ideas off others is really the only way to know what works. Adam would have had a field day with my mix and production, it is all over the place, lol. One part the bass is blowing up my speakers, the next part it's compressed so hard that it sounds like cricket farts.

Advice to all. Never use unfamiliar fx and equipment for such important events as Nur Ein.

No hatred here. We're still cool and once the Nur Ein's done, you, me and another party who shall remain nameless have got some plans to discuss.

To all remaining Nur Ein contestants, allow me to put an offer on the table.
If you unanimously vote to allow my song in this round, I will accept elimination no matter what the judging results are. This is a no risk decision for everyone. I would just like my song to be heard and judged, which was written for this title and challenge.
After that, I will slowly walk backwards into the dark while repeatedly saying, good bye everyone, and disappear into the mist until my voice is so distant that it becomes part of the cold ocean breeze.
