Nur Ein VI Round Six "Kids"

Post by Niveous »

We are almost at the finale. As we wait for the scores for Round 5, you can begin devising how you tackle the judges' last challenge (and toughest)

Title: "Kids"
Non Optional Challenge: No real instruments
Songs are Due on: Monday, May 30th @ 12:01 AM EDT
Send your MP3 to nurein.sidefight@gmail.com

No real instruments? Vocals, software, rubber band, blades of glass... Just put away the guitars, drums, keyboards, etc.

I have exactly 3 nights to do this, if I start tonight. Which I won't. So here's hoping I'm cut!
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

I hold out hardly any hope, but have to start working on it tonight because I am going to a wedding four states away; driving. Which makes the challenge perfect as I will be in hotels with my drummer brother and totally portable recording equipment.
*sigh*

Software = no real instruments. So a great synthesizer that sounds just like a real instrument is ok? I know judges hate parsing the challenges, but this seems like a pertinent question.

I'm hoping the answer is no.

I'm hoping it effects me personally :-)

I was just wondering this. All my pianos are made with software, but I feel it would offend the spirit of the challenge to use my 88key midi controller to run pianoteq. But what about an iPhone guitar? Or Synth pond (altho I need to hiatus the artistic stuff if I squeak thru)
......hmm.
I know better than this.
I hope it effects you too Ross. I liked yours. This was a good round I feel. Lot of bringgage.. even the people who feel unsure and had problems.

Are toy instruments acceptable?

I know this seems like kind of a dumb question as technically they are both real and instruments, but they are far more limiting for composition than almost all music software.

I interpret this challenge as:
  • No midi of any sort
  • Nothing that was designed to make music
So, if anyone's hardcore enough to join me in my Stomp fest, please do. I fully expect the judges to jump on anything even resembling an instrument.

Edit: I'll try to live up to my namesake and only use alcoholic instruments. NUR EIN!!!!!!

Kids Reviews (fake)-

Looks like everyone ignored the challenge. Solidarity? How will the judges react? Did you break Nur Ein before it broke you?

From best to worst:

Ross Reed-

This is my favorite of the bunch. I’m not sure how the judges will like this extended ending. It really plays long. The lyrics are so dark. When the babies are crying it is absolutely chilling. This is a risky move at this stage. I wonder how the judges will react to this. I mean this is almost 8 minutes and it’s not even a cycle song. You’ve got balls to submit this now. I admire your guts. The darkness of this hits me in the guts too. The Bob Ezrin super reverb is gorgeous! Is that you on slide? Tasty stuff! The clear winner.

Manhattan Glutton M T-

This is infectious. Maybe too pop? That low synth sounds awesome. I don’t get what the lyrics are about, but I don’t really care. The beat is so driving. Still, I’d give my kingdom for an odd time sig, or some syncopation.

Paco del Strouse-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wCXr_6wgns
These lyrics are very funny. It’s a perfect show tune. I can’t imagine repeated listens to this. The early 60’s vibe is spot on. This might win, novelty songs seem to play well. I’ll say bravo, but it really needs a guitar solo.

What So A-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibbeXENVXEI
The musicianship is amazing. The song does sound like “kids”, but maybe more so “little kids”. I can’t believe you have 5 people in the band and you submit an instrumental. I don’t think Spin is going to like this at all, no lyrics= no like. The musicianship is amazing, but it may be too heady and without soul. Who’s playing violin? Impressive, but it’s the wrong concept at the wrong time. I can’t imagine this moving on.

Minoliamsguewil-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYB4ebbJUys
You play your voices off each other really well. I love the drums. Sounds like Lunk spent a lot of time on them. I think the verse works better than the chorus. I think this is overproduced. I thought your strong suit was folky and haunting. This is kind of just pop fodder. Very disappointing from you guys. A rap bridge? Gag!

I'm almost done (since I'm gone this weekend, has to be done tonight), but I'm finding it more fun to work on the wiki. Trying to make it easier to maintain with templates and whatnot. If you run into issues please let me know.

MG, you suck! You are up against Ross and Paco. Forget those other boy bands with cute girl voices that are mind fucking the judges! You have to beat the masters. It doesn't matter that they're baiters. They are true to their kraft.............................mac and cheese, so you need to be Gouda!

Pretty interesting stuff here

http://people.geneticmail.com/sam/nur_ein_table.html

For one thing, this round includes three groups with some of the most career Nur Ein! Round wins:WSA/BSS with four, Merisan/Tiny Robots with four, Me with four.

Also, all five contestants in round six won at least one round previously this Ein!, although that seems a pretty common situation in the round of four or five in previous eins.

Interesting tables, Sam. Thnaks for maintaining them.
