If you feel there's an insight that would be of particular help to listeners of your song, you may include a spiel along with your lyrics in the lyric thread. But keep in mind: this should be used only for the justified esoteric...if you need to explain your song (approach to the challenge, etc.), you're already losing points.

In other words, we'd like to encourage Nur Ein! parcipants to craft some "Song Bio's." Engage in the reflective activity of telling us how you fashioned the song from embryonic concept(s) to hitting the "Send" button on your email. Avoid a gloss or explication, but rather invite your listeners in and let us look under the hood.

Go ahead, mix your metaphors all day long.

Contestants these days, don't know when they're having the piss taken out of them ...

I would like to point out my learned co-judge is using the royal "we". For me - iIf you have to explain it, regardless of how many "in my neck of the woods ..." get out of jail free cards you try to play, you're already slipping down my greasy "bad song-writing" pole. And that's not somewhere you want to be bottoming, I would imagine.

Or in other words, *I* don't give a sh*t how you wrote the song as long as I like it. And if I don't, no wikipedia entry explanation is going to change my mind. But then again, I am but one of five, and I appear to be shaping up as the c*nt judge. As usual. Hooray!

Nur Ein reviews…
I have owed 3 rounds worth of reviews because I’ve been working on all sorts of stuff like the Associated Acts list (If you haven’t seen this list, take a look and tell me what you think). This means that there are a ton of songs that I have to talk about. Instead of doing 3 different review posts, I’ve decided to go to the beat of a different drum and do one big post.
Let me say one thing about Nur Ein beforehand, since I think it’ll help you see where I’m coming from with my reviews. Whenever I think about this competition, I think about my time in college. More specifically the English courses I took. Seeing as that was my major, I took some wacky courses especially when it came to creative writing and poetry. Often I was given very restrictive assignments or assignments that took me out of my comfort zone. The results often were very good because they forced me to be more creative. I’m thankful for all the villanelles, sestinas and run-on sentences I had to do. I hope at the end of the day, the competitors here feel the same way, like Nur Ein pushed them to do some new creative things.
Some days, the competition aspect of the Nur Ein sucks. I believe wholeheartedly in experimentation when it comes to music. Sometimes that can be the kiss of death in the Nur Ein because not every experiment succeeds. But like those aforementioned college classes, there needs to be a driving force. I did those courses not just for the experience, I did it for a grade and college credit. The competition is the driving force for the Nur Ein. It’s that extra added push to keep going. But it also means that one bad song can mean the end of the road. It doesn’t mean the journey wasn’t worth it.
In this review, I’m going band by band. No one gets cumulative marks, but it’s still interesting to see evolutions.

bgm:
“Breaking the Ice” was such a phenomenal song and it’s earned a place on my jukebox once this Nur Ein is over. Following a song like that is difficult but “Architect” proved to be great 2nd song. The twang of the guitars made a great atmosphere in the song and like “Ice”, there are some nice touches hidden in the mix. The catch round was brilliant. Framing the lyrics so that the catch would say “It’s our fate your sealing” was a master stroke. So, after 2 amazing songs, how does bgm follow up? By winning the next round. I’m not as big a fan of his “…the Darkest”. It’s got a carousel/ sing song rhythm and I didn’t like the birds or the counting, but it told a good story so it was a song in the middle of the pack for me. Still, bgm is a frontrunner in this Nur Ein without question and I can’t wait to hear how he tackles “ETG”.

DJ Ranger Den
Architect was not Den’s strongest showing. I appreciate the a capella take to go along with the round but it’s a bland song. It may be a round challenge but it got excessive with the “Architect build a ….” line. After a while, it all became too much. It was neat that by the end, DJRD had turned into a one person choir but it had already lost a good chunk of my attention by that point. “…The Darkest” was short and barely handled the challenge. This was carried by a great performance. Hearing Den’s voice with all its sultry and coo explained to me why my girlfriend gets a twinge of jealousy at Den’s mere mention (Yes, that happens but it’s just a twinge). That performance saved her, though I had her near the bottom of my list. Thankfully, she made it into the next round where she showed she belonged. She picked the right guest in Billy’s Little Trip. His guitar work mixed with her double- tracked Veruca Salty vocals made for my favorite song in the round. DJRD can be hit or miss but she always delivers a strong vocal. If she continues to find the right inspiration and handles the time crunches, she could pull off the victory.

Frankie Big Face
Frankie opens up “Architect” with that organ and it screams out cool and swagger. But the vocals on the verses instead of going gruff, he decided to go for a lower slicker vocal (which reminded me a little of Schoolhouse Rock in its delivery). I wish that the verse vocal had the same kind of punch that the chorus vocal had. Not the greatest round in the song but it’s cute. A decent song all around. FBF improved with “…The Darkest” by showing a little of his metal(?) side after shedding his 70’s pop by turning off the radio and bringing in some crunchy guitars and effected vocals. Despite the departure, he kept true to his sound with the chorus sections and the contrast made for a very good song. His ascent has continued as my favorite song of his during the Nur Ein has been “Unexpected Guest” featuring Student Band. The music has great energy and the lyrics are a very different take on Unexpected Guest. A well done song about meeting a transsexual; you don’t get that every day. Frankie’s work is on the rise. He’s working hard to try and become the first 2 time Nur Ein champ. Let’s see if the ascent continues.

WreckdoM
I’ve been a big fan of WreckdoM’s music for years now. Songs like “False Positive”, “Clause 5…” and their cover of “Digging in the Dirt” have earned spots on my jukebox. WreckdoM is a great example of a band who is unafraid to experiment and that’s why I enjoy them so much. “Architect” was kinda subdued for them, more bass and less frantic guitars. They succeeded at the round challenge but using it in every verse may have been a bit much. I liked the touch of WreckdoMelle at the end singing “Architect of my desire” under the ending. After a so-so Round 1, WreckdoM came back with a vengeance with “…The Darkest”. The idea of a car start/ stop was a good fulfilling of the challenge as it was also the ignition of the song and then to add to the theme, WreckdoM’s song sounded like something Clutch would do. Geoff’s vocals are delivered with grit and the chorus is catchy and strong. One of my favorites of the round. Then came “Unexpected Guest” which started off strong with a very funky verse full of great bass and Geoff bringing the cool. I enjoyed the verses a lot but the choruses brought the song down with the mom voice and the bad bass voice in the 2nd chorus. I liked the idea and points for a mother’s day tune but the problem with just execution. WreckdoM’s elimination just goes to show you that a little flaw can get you eliminated when the field is this strong. I hope to hear more from this new 3 person version of WreckdoM.

Adam Adamant
“Architect” was a nice little tune. It started off with a very minimal arrangement with the ukulele strums and a simple drumbeat and the round. It set a good tone for the rest of the song and allowed for the song to build. I wish the song would’ve gotten even bigger over a more gradual build but still a good song and probably my favorite of his four NE7 songs. “…The Darkest” was an okay song, but a bit forgettable. I had to replay it just to start this review. I like the percussion choices (is that a bottle) along with the synthesized… is that supposed to be an accordion? But it dragged a bit and needed something to spice it up, perhaps a stronger more emotionally connected vocal. It fell in the middle of the pack in that round. “Unexpected Guest” is built on a good sample (it sounds like some kind of strangled 80’s new wave like “Look of Love”) but it’s a bit of a novelty track. A few years back, J$, TVIYH and myself did a rap song for “Fight the Sea” and we filled it to references to MC Frontalot and Suave Noise Youth. It was fun but it doesn’t stand on its own. Once out of the Songfight frame, it loses a lot. The same thing happens here. When I listen to Nur Ein songs, I always think if the song is something that I would put in my jukebox. The answer here is no because its so self-reflexive. (I don’t have “fight the sea” in my jukebox either). And so, a misstep takes down Adam Adamant which is a shame because he always brings a well needed dose of experimenting into Nur Ein.

Merisan
Merisan started off NE7 with a very fun rocker in “Breaking the Ice”. Their follow up was an extremely sleepy ballad, “Architect”. There was very very little Erin on the song and it was pretty much a lullaby, especially with Sam’s delivery. The round between Sam & Erin brought some life to the song but it was too little too late in my opinion as the song was uninteresting overall. Not the best ballad from a duo that can make some great ballads. They returned at full strength with “…the Darkest”. Merisan likes to play with Latin flavors on occasions and did that here. It’s an okay song though I am not a fan of the lyric on the chorus about praying for blindness. The reason why I dislike it is that it’s not justified anywhere else in the lyric. What might they see? There are secret lovers, whiskey flowing… nothing that makes you wanna go blind. It’s not like the song describes the club as a donkey show or some similar abomination. Other than that minor annoyance, it’s an okay song and one of Merisan’s better attempts to go Latin. Merisan was in the middle of the pack until “Unexpected Guest”. They made a great choice in collaborators by getting 15-16 Puzzle as a lyricist. He crafted a great story in the song and Merisan played it perfectly, making an emotional duet with a dark tone. Their best song yet in this Nur Ein. They had a shaky start but they’re hitting a stride now and I’m curious to how they’ll handle “Elizabeth…”

Snappy + Floyd
The rap trip of Snappy, Floyd and Big Drama started this year’s Nur Ein with a rap song that brought a sound like nothing I had ever heard of with “Breaking the Ice”. I hoped for the same type of innovation for “Architect” but it didn’t hit the mark. It’s basically, Snappy + Floyd rapping about how they craft songs like no others. Problem here was that to prove this point they decided to go for longer verses and it came off like a freestyle rapper losing steam with some of the raps just weren’t the most creative lyrical choices. Big Drama’s rap at the end was the savior of the song along with the odd handling of the round which wasn’t great but was kooky enough to keep me listening especially the round guitar solo. I was still curious to hear more from S+F when it came to “…The Darkest” and I was excited to hear a space odyssey. But the song was full of cheap jokes like the stop to talk about polyamory and the epilogue where the band learned that the two diners were the same. It wasn’t a great story in the song nor was it very funny and that was enough to get them eliminated. There is a lot of potential in this trio. All three songs showed that they are trying to take rap in a different direction. I wasn’t completely on board here but who knows in the future.

Act DeaD
“Architect” had a nice rounds in it but it was the definition of a middle-of-the-road song when it came to that round. It didn’t offend in any way nor did it thrill. It’s the kind of song that I can put on in the background while doing work at my job or writing my novel and it doesn’t disturb. You don’t have to concentrate too much on the lyrics and you tap your toes occasionally. Things were far more interesting when it came to “…The Darkest”. The vocal delivery was sharper and the song is built around a very cool guitar riff. It wasn’t my favorite song in the round but it wasn’t bad. I could’ve done without about a minute of “you can’t awake” and I would’ve enjoyed some long, more emphatic stops; but it was another decent song from ADD. I wasn’t a fan of his “Unexpected Guest”. I enjoy the Def Author’s rap work but this song is Glenn Case feat. ADD and not ADD feat. Glenn Case. ADD came off as “just some guy”. And the story in the song is weak and truncated. The ending comes off as: Glenn accidentally opens a portal, “unexpected guests”, evil laugh, song goes back to the original beat like nothing happened, quote I don’t recognize, FIN. There’s the meat of the song, something interesting happens, the unexpected guests appear and then nothing, perhaps less than nothing since the beat goes back to the beginning negating all that just happened like the end of Newhart. ADD can craft a good song. His “Breaking the Ice” has been my favorite so far, but I feel he’s just hanging in the middle of the pack right now and I wish he’d go in for the kill.

Boffo Yux Dudes
The comedy crew’s “Architect” was full of bad puns. “Show you my erection kit”? Couldn’t the joke have worked with “erector kit” and been a pun. Musically, it was singing over some cheesy MIDI before ending with a tacked-on round at the end (at least it felt that way). This was not a fun song with jokes that missed the mark with me. It has been said that I just don’t get BYD’s humor and I’ll admit that there are few times that I’ve laughed at their songs. One of those few times was at “…the Darkest”, which was their attempt at funk/soul. It was still built around cheesy midi bits but it worked better because it didn’t try to unload a trillion jokes at me like previous songs. It let the jokes breathe (“…until you kill Voldemort” was my fave) and they worked and I also enjoyed the less jokey parts. It was as if BYD were Morris Day & the Time and I can get behind that. Too bad, BYD didn’t survive the round. I may have enjoyed more of this particular fake-funk schtick.

WSA
The Nur Ein supergroup just got a little more super as Glennny, Furrypedro, Frisbee and Melvin added Ken to their ranks for this year’s competition but it didn’t really change their signature mellow-prog sound (Melvin hasn’t really appeared much, has he?). “Architect” started with a round leading into Frisbee’s unique vocal stylings. They held well in the verses but really didn’t hold up in the choruses especially with some notes that pushed to the edge of his range. That could’ve been a perfect time for a tag out. I also have no idea what in Sam Hill is going on lyrically with this song. It was far from my favorite WSA song. “…The Darkest” seemed to be mostly Glennny. It gave a nod to Sidewalk Café (where Ben Krieger does the booking and Songfight has played) which was cute. It’s got a pretty good chorus but the verses fall flat. Then at the 2:42 (where it could’ve ended and been just fine), it turned into a whole different beast built on Latin percussion and guitar wankery before coming back for the unhappy ending. Not a bad song but not a great one either. WSA’s best outing so far has been “Unexpected Guest” featuring Glenn Case. The contrast of Frisbee & Glenn’s voices helped make this song work, Plus Ken showed off a different side of his percussion work incorporating some digital bits. The song is catchy and energetic and a step in the right direction for the WSA.

***All reviews above this point were written before the Round 4 Bloodbath***

Oystercatcher
And a champion falls. It’s terrible that Ben had to drop out due to illness as I greatly enjoyed where he had been going with his songs. Ben is unafraid to take a song down the road less traveled and I liked having that in the competition. “Architect” was a great song. I wish he would’ve posted the lyrics in the lyric thread but still they are spectacular and standout with the minimal arrangement. I also enjoy the “Smoke that slowly sails away” round filled with alliteration and a couple of powerful notes behind it. I could’ve done without the guitar destroying ending though. Then it was time for a pee break. It was a daring choice to go punk for “…The Darkest” and to make the song about the need to pee in the city. It’s not a coy subject, so it had a fitting brashness to it. I don’t know what was going on with the percussion in the song but it was a minor flaw in a song full of energy, great delivery and fun. I hope to see Ben do that song like one day…minus the peeing. I don’t need to see him pee. “Unexpected Guest” makes me uncomfortable. One, it’s about tapeworms and there’s a line about getting the tweezers. Ew. Two, it’s full of screaming baby. Sure, Ben’s kid is one of the coolest kids ever (her middle name is Thunderbolt!) but the sound of kids screaming is always terrible. Great lyric with the “flat” and “round”. It’s a very good song but screaming kids and tapeworms do not make for a song I wanna hear over and over again.

To be continued tomorrow...

Thanks for the encapsulated reviews, Niv. One of the things I love about Nur Ein is it goes by so quickly and the intensity level is so high that I often don't even remember what my song sounded like two rounds ago! (as was the actual case while reading your review—I had to go back and listen to "...the Darkest") In that sense, it's almost as if these songs just materialized out of nowhere. I often feel distanced from them very quickly. It's a strange phenomenon, but I think it's cool.

I knew this wasn't going to a fun read, but thanks for writing it, Niveous. I'm afraid that whatever it is you liked about my music must be something I don't do anymore. I've felt like I've gone for the kill in every song. (Except maybe "Guest".) You'll have to let me know if I ever stumble back onto it.
