The other obvious interpretation is that you lack a sense of humour. Evidence of this abounds on these forums :)

I really don't think that's unique to California or characteristic of the Bay Area at all. You could have that experience anywhere, though maybe it's more likely in larger cities than in smaller metro areas or rural areas. If anything I'd say it's more likely to indicate that the comedy scene in San Francisco sucks, than that Bay Area people and/or Californians are exceptionally delusional and full of themselves. I think you definitely have some selection bias towards self delusion by basing your judgement on any kind of performer/entertainer, too.

Sorry Sam, that's not how I intended to come off. I hereby resign myself from this conversation tangent.
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

glennny wrote:8-Chocolate Chips- I think you lost because of the lyrics. You have one of the catchiest melodies of the fight. We hear that same phrase a lot, but I don’t get tired of it. You mentioned this was a rush job. A little more time on the lyrics, I bet you’d still be around.
I've got this ridiculous idea to do "educational" songs for the YouTubes. So... that's the reason for the lyrics. Yes they are absolutely terrible and I deserve to be docked for them - but I do have some reason for them.. it's quite hard to get factual lyric lines to fit with a melody and my bias is to focus on the melody and make the lyrics work around it.

I've been hanging around reading this forum so I can't quite quit the addiction yet. Plus I get to vote in the final round, right? That should be a good time. I might even do another round of my reviews... maybe all positive stuff so I can go out with everyone loving me. ... on the other hand I really want to finish my new song THE SUN IS OUR STAR (track two on INFOTAINMENT!)

Feeling too sick to work on my own stuff right now so I'm going to do some reviews of these...

ADD --- This is one of the two songs in this round that reminds me of The Decemberists. Nice song with strong vocals (well sung with personality.) Good guitar bits and very good production. I like the trippy organ sound during the faster bit. Maybe my favorite ADD song so far (although I haven't listened to the first 4 rounds real recently.)

bgm --- Reminds me of Cake during the verses (bit campy sounding.) I like the choruses with the higher voice a lot more than the verses. Production is excellent as always. The backing vocals are really sweet (very 60s which is right up my alley.)

The Chocolate Chips --- I was reasonably happy with the melodies and the harpsichord thing. The lyrics are ridiculous. The end was a total rush job. I couldn't make happen what I wanted to make happen so I decided to just destroy it. Maybe I didn't destroy it enough...? Listening back now it's not as intense as I was wanting it to be (once I gave up on the first idea, I mean.)

DJ Ranger Den --- I always get really confused by your name ... I'm expecting you to do some sort of DJ thing and then you've got this whole great lady vocals + piano thing going on. Your songs always have a lot of personality and your vocals are really good.

Frankie Big Face --- I think it's interesting that this is the first FBF to win a round because I think it may be my least favorite of yours so far - that said, it's still great. I like all of the references to various songs/styles... particularly the sound that reminds me of The Beatles "Baby You're A Rich Man." I get the feeling that you're a huge Beatles geek. Is this true? I am one myself, so I definitely don't mean it as a slight. It's just that I've noticed Beatles references in a few of your songs. Also getting the David Bowie thing. But if I have to say something negative (and I was wanting these reviews to be all positive) it's that sometimes I get the feeling listening to your stuff that the songs are kind of like... showing off all of the different things you can do... rather than trying to get across something directly to the listener. I think this can make the song sound a bit detached (or like "musical masturbation.") I suppose some of Paul McCartney's solo stuff comes off that way too which is part of why he rubs people the wrong way (that said; I'm actually a pretty big solo Paul fan, I'm always thinking: but you guys don't get it, man.) So... You are obviously very good as a musician and a very skilled and knowledgeable songwriter but ... I sometimes get that "it's too effortless" thing.

GJ & the Chiefs --- I get a lot of personality from your songs. This one I think is a lot better than your last one - but I really enjoyed your last one because it made my brain hurt a bit. This one is just really good. The backing vocals during the quiet bit past 2 minutes are probably my favorite part of the song.

Manhattan Glutton --- The first 90 seconds remind me a lot of The Decemberists (the other song to do that...) I'm not a huge fan of the next 60 seconds (gets a bit silly there)... But I do really like dubstepish breakdown.

Ross Durand --- I have to admit this one doesn't do much for me but I do want to remain positive so I will say that your vocals have a pretty good appeal to most normal people. Also the bass part is cool. Your guitars are good.

The Worldly Self Assurance --- I really like the beginning. Nice vocals with interesting lyrics and really cool production. If the rest of the song was more like the intro this would have been my favorite but I don't really like the second part very much. In a nutshell I like the verses a lot but the choruses put me off ("wait for you to fall...") Maybe another problem is that I'm not really even sure which part is the chorus... There are elements of this that I really like a lot (the verse vocals, the guitar tones, the drum tone on the verse.) I'd say my favorite parts of this song are my favorite parts of this round.

hello Chocolate Chips!

I am drinking wine, so I am not going to say much to-day except thank you for your nice review of my hastily constructed little number :)
at some Point I will tell the Amusing tale of my "Mock-DJ Name"

I was gonna bust out with some House or Rap {I'll give you folks time to laugh} but then when I realized I didn't have any more idea how to do that than I would have pulling off a Fear Factory cover, I stuck to what I know - which is Mooshy Piano Brain things and borrowing BLT sometimes.

More later. For now this typing was very impressive.

ps. re-reading your review of yourself, although I can see your point and do agree- I do not think that your deconstruction of yourself toward the end was all that out of control.
