I don't know why you sometimes say things like this -- other than perhaps that you really seem to take this competition stuff (and all the little details that go along with it) far too seriously, when it's supposed to be fun.

I was only speaking in absolute terms to contradict what you said -- indicating to us judges what we "can't" do, and what we "have" to do. That's the only "bullshit" in my opinion: that there are rules about how a judge can feel about something, or how a judge might choose to judge.

Can you explain what the word "narcissistic" means to you, and how it applies to anything I've said here?
I would send you a PM and explain it but you'll just quote want you want out of context and post it to the message boards for everyone to see. 'Cause that's how you roll.

See what j$ wrote? That's called actually communicating something of substance and not being a completely dismissive ass. One might even say he understands this is a competition that people take seriously, maybe even "far too seriously." That's why he takes the time to communicate with respect even if he doesn't agree with you.

Everyone here wants to have fun but I think it's safe to say everyone wants to win too. If you "really want to like me," great! I really want to like you too. Maybe we both need to try a little harder to be likable.

I agree. Merisan's song this week was my fav and probably my fav Merisan song to date. I was trying to figure out if I liked it so much because it was a change from their Toad the Wet Sprocket with a female singer style, or if it's just because it's straight up rockin'. I really like the music from a guy power band with a girl singer and this works for me. Although I won't agree this sounds like the Hell Yeahs, but it's certainly in the same genre. Kudos!

Well, it's because he's British. Backhanded compliments are their specialty. :D

j/k. I've read every one of your reviews, J$. Your reviews are right on the money 100% of the time, (even if the reviewed doesn't agree) which is saying a lot considering the diversity of the musicians here. You have a great ear for music.

Too many people wrote:A lot of Nur Whining
We gave you a challenge that was highly intrepretative. One word. Lots of meanings. There was a lot of discussion about this before the judging period so this point was pretty clear.

The judges judged. A subjective look at how several people intrepreted the highly intrepretative challenge.

Now there's all this talk about consensus and how 'my intrepretation should have been good enough'. Blah blah blah.

Look, everyone no matter what the challenge is going to have their own opinion of how the challenge has been met. It's all a part of being a judge. Trust me, it ain't much easier on this side of the table.

I came up the idea for a metal challenge. Why? To see what it brought out of everyone (which is the reason why I do Nur Ein in the first place). And I'm happy that some of you tried.

It's an experiment and not every experiment will be met with success.

If you liked your song even if the judges didn't, bravo- you have one more song in your catalog that you like. Isn't that the big takeaway? It's not like you get a plaque at the end of this or anything. What you get at the end are a bunch of great new songs that you were pushed to do by time restraints and creative challenges.

I'll put up my reviews later. You may like them, you may not. But you want them. It's also part of why you came. A captive audience of six who are willing to listen to your songs repeatedly and tell you what they think (even if you don't like their opinions).

PS- I love metal, whether it be Made Out of Babies, Napalm Death, Ratt, Sabbath, iwrestledabearonce... You may not like metal. Fine. To each their own.

PPS- Some people need to realize that they just aren't as funny as they think OR that their jokes just don't hit the way they want when they are written down.

Nur Ein is a marathon - not a race. Your only competition should be yourself. If you're the fat guy who can't go 5 minutes, at least you tried, you have something to show for your work, and you have a goal for next time.

@Eric Y. - That's exactly what I expected you would do. A complete dick move. I really don't care. I stand by my words. It was a private message. It was Round One - there were bad songs.

And furthermore, I don't give a shit what you personally think about any of my music, whether you like it or not. I have mountains of respect for Niveous, Roymond, and j$. They know me and they know my music and what they say matters to me. Your wife (who shall not be guilty by association) and Mysteria have been kind and professional and, if they hate me or my music or think I'm a dick, they've kept if to themselves or spoken of it only in private. You, on the other hand, can go fuck yourself.

I apologize to everyone here for not showing restraint in dealing with this situation. I usually try to address this stuff in private, but that doesn't work when people copy and paste your messages in favor of actually trying to resolve conflicts. Sorry.

(written minutes before the lock out)

Finally, some fight on Song Fight!
When the subject is metal it should lead to these arguments.
Arguments are fun, last year Man Glut was so jealous of my speedy guitar prowess he accused me of being a cheetah. I had the best time hanging out with him in Seattle. On the boards I've been hated by Frankie, and Furry Pedro and many others. It's just an Internet argument. In real life I love all these people. We all love music so much we spend our free time writing and listening and thinking about it. Arguments are fun and healthy.

So how is it we had a metal genre fight, and the main focus wasn't guitar solos? I really dug my guitar solos this round, maybe I've saturated all my songs too much with guitar solos. Admittedly I often think of music as a vehicle for guitar solos, but metal especially.
In my heavily biased view I did not win the guitar solo battle. I think Lunkhead bested me ( again). Wreckdom had some excellent licks in there as well as Paco!

Bands don't restrict themselves into what is called what. Writers do. And record store organizers do. I liked the vague challenge. If I had it to do all over again ( I'd remix) I'd incorporate metal sounds like Ben did, go straight for what I think is pure metal as I did, and change our lyrics to focus more on the mining aspects of Dantooine and the metallurgy involved in Death Star materials.

It was fun to revisit my 12 year old self ( good call Caravan)

Now it is time for Ba De Ya......

Hey, today I’m writing review paragraphs of doom! Sorry for the delay. Work has been very tough lately with a change in procedures that has made my job full of wonderful excel. But hey, you don’t really care about that. You wanna know what I think about your songs. Balance Lost’s starts off strong with that great opening but the song falters after that. The biggest fault for me is the delivery. It doesn’t feel like the emotion behind the lyrics is there. The best part of the song is when it drops the façade and just becomes the usual Balance Lost stuff. WreckdoM did well musically but I found myself lyrically disinterested. It’s just that the humor missed the mark a bit and while the music was good, it wasn’t enough to lift the rest of the song up. But I have to say that the solo in this was badass. If the whole song was like the chorus and bridge, this would be on my brainwash rotation. Tydon Docks song was thin. There was little in this song for me to grab on to. I wasn’t fond of the lyrics. The lyrics didn’t catch me. The breakdown didn’t do it for me. The music was the best part but all together this was a disappointment especially after hearing Caravan Ray’s tough side on “Make the First Move”. Governing Dynamics brought some grunge which I appreciated. It had a Soundgarden “Loud Love” feel to it. It’s not a bad song, it’s not a great song either. It’s one of the worst things you can be in a competition like this- forgettable. It just doesn’t stand out in the crowd. Frankie Big Face also brought a bit of that grunge feel to his song but unlike GovDyn’s song, there were elements that stuck out, like the verse ending big notes and the breakdowns before the choruses. The song is full of nice little touches. I would’ve liked a good strong guitar solo and another chorus at the end but that shouldn’t diminish the fact that this song is top notch. The metal horns of Ross Durand are next. This seemed like a pretty normal Ross Durand with some distortion thrown in until the little bits of shredding kicked in. I didn’t really enjoy the horns but by the end I enjoyed the song for what it was. Not my favorite song in the round but it had some charm. Chokehold Princess used metal percussion and I couldn’t tell in the slightest. It was as if he did too good a job with the percussion that when I made my initial votes I nerfed his score because I couldn’t tell the metal was there except the kind of scraping noise in the bridge which was more annoying that anything. The song has grown on me over time but it’s still in the middle of the pack as I’m not a fan of the chorus. I don’t think I get it. Cavedwellers added some crunch to their sound while still being the Nur Ein’s version of Rush. There were some awkward vocal choices in there. Despite being a proud nerd, the Star Wars references were kinda lost on me (not my field of nerd studies). That notwithstanding, it’s a fun song which could be better with some polishing. Paco del Stinko wasn’t eligible to win the round, which was good for Frankie because this is a damn good song and would’ve given him a run for the money. The stark sections with just Paco singing over the bass and hihat were great and make for a very good contrast when the guitars kick in. Well put together from top to bottom. Great job, Paco. Manhattan Glutton made a song that reminded me of 90’s bands that came out after the end of grunge, like Seven Mary Three or Three Doors Down. I thought this song was kinda boring. The lyrics are weak in some parts (“I leave in the morning to find the light/ the wind is loud, the sun is bright”) and the vocal delivery is a little sleepy. Only the solos redeem this song. And that leaves Merisan who somehow became The Hell Yeahs, and it’s not just because they are both couples who rock. I kept wanting to sing the “All Hail the Snake” chorus while listening to this. Not a knock on this though, I dug it especially Lunkhead’s killer guitar work as he produced the best solo of the round. Once giant block of text done, two to go.

@Niveous - I would have liked an awesome guitar solo too, but this would require me to be a competent guitar player. I felt pretty awesome just delivering that short little dual guitar lead right before the second chorus!
