Re: Nur Ein IX- Round Zero
What if I write a song about a bridge and sing it courageously?
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

Good points.Caravan Ray wrote: So Jon - would "Are You Lonesome Tonight" pass with you? (assuming Elvis was still alive, and playing Nur Ein, and he hadn't recorded it 60 years ago).
Not that it really matters to me in any way. By pure accident - my spoken word bit is definitely not a verse, and can I think be certainly considered a bridge. Or at least, a fairly substantial culvert.
Yes, "Are You Lonesome Tonight" would pass muster easily. Even though the instrumentation and chord progressions are basically the same as the previous two verses, which technically means that that section is another verse and not a true bridge, I think it counts because the words being spoken rather than sung make it sufficiently different from the verses.
This is also what I figured was the point of saying "Spoken word bridge" instead of just "spoken word vocals." Admittedly, I can't read the mind of the person who thought this challenge up, so my opinion isn't necessarily any more valid than any of yours - except that I get to rank y'all.
In conclusion, I'm more concerned with the "bridge" vocals being different from the rest of the piece than it being an honest-to-goodness bridge.

Fair enough. That is what I took it to mean too.Generic wrote:Good points.Caravan Ray wrote: So Jon - would "Are You Lonesome Tonight" pass with you? (assuming Elvis was still alive, and playing Nur Ein, and he hadn't recorded it 60 years ago).

This is my favourite example of such a song. Arguably the greatest song ever written in Brisbane, and Queensland's Unofficial State Anthem (in my opinion, anyway) - the Go-Between's masterpiece from 1983 (spoken word at 2:50):
...and funnily enough, the Go-Betweens now have a bridge named after them across the Brisbane River.
Spooky.

Alright guys I think I finally got the challenge figured out. I've submitted a clip of my pronunciation of "bridge".Niveous wrote:Non Optional Challenge: Must include a spoken word: "bridge"

Re: Nur Ein IX- Round Zero
My only really concern is, does the "spoken word bridge" have to be actual "words" - you know, like from an actual human language - or is there wiggle room on that one?

Re: Nur Ein IX- Round Zero
Like rambling off words from a 32-bit CPU? But then should we say them in binary, octal, hex, or decimal? Floating point or integral representation? Are double-words allowed? And do we use the architectural or the canonical definition of word?

Hi all,
Whichever way the concept "spoken word bridge" appears, it will be good for this judge. Better as the more obvious or surprising.

Seems like there was about a 50 percent chance of that.

Re: Nur Ein IX- Round Zero
spoken word bridge is fun. I've had them several times. My favorite from my catalog is the Phillipso track "All Tan".
my wife (playing the character of the girl in the bar I'm trying to buy a drink for) delivers the spoken word:
"Why can't you men grasp, if it's one part right it's defacto wrong?
If left with the feeble choice, I would choose Black, the clearly obvious choice
you astonishingly inept man!"

Re: Nur Ein IX- Round Zero
My favorite spoken word bit should be no surprise. The bridge is before the amazing long solo in Packard Goose off Joe's Garage (Frank Zappa):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKZV2rViulY
the spoken word comes in around 2:50
"Hi! It's me... the girl from the bus...
Remember? The last tour? Well...
Information is not knowledge
Knowledge is not wisdom
Wisdom is not truth
Truth is not beauty
Beauty is not love
Love is not music
Music is THE BEST...
Wisdom is the domain of the Wis
(which is extinct).
Beauty is a French phonetic corruption
Of a short cloth neck ornament
Currently in resurgence... "

In. Nothing good ever comes from thinking "Let's get the Cowardly Lion drunk", I'd wager.
Now off to put the lyrics up in the lyrics thread (judges like that sort of thing )
