Re: Nur Ein IX- Round One
Just sent. I'm sorry about the lenght of the archive. Don't know what's the reason, but the song is 3:40 long and not 6:00. Anyway there it is, youll have a few minutes of "silence" at the end. As they say, "silence is golden", no? hahahahah.
Lyrics posted as well.

Lyrics in from LA - Music rough tracks in Chicago. Vocals warbled in Boston. Now it's gotta be mixed in Chicago and uploaded. But the Lyrics are up.

In. Because the round zero reviews irritated me (and rightfully so, I admit, remind me never to do g&g about alcoholism again, ugh) I've reverted to form in round one. Xylophone, bass clarinet, saz, and vocals. Bizarre lyrics. Nur-fuckin-ein!

Round 2:
Non Optional Challenge: Song must include a repeating section that goes from Major to Minor or vice versa.
What does that mean?
Is that just like playing - G Am G Am.....?

Re: Nur Ein IX- Round One
Some very quick reviews, mostly single listen.
This round is between Ken and Manhattan Glutton I think. My honourable mentions go to Balance Lost, Cookie Blue, Levitt Down, Cave Dwellers.
For those that want to know, my criteria are more or less: I don't care about the challenge, a novel song beats a competent one. I'm inconsistent and find it hard to justify my opinions. I think I tend to be more critical in general than positive.
Balance Lost
I usually am not a fan of your singing, I think because it reminds me too much of my own, which I always cringe at, although yours is better. ... The rap is really good, I am into it, the bass is super tight and the whole mix is a lot of fun. When the singing comes in I'm digging it. This is a really good entry.
Boffo Yux
Pretty good. Slightly too soft in the mix. A bit quiet. Vocals stray between great and slightly off target. Subtle strings are nice. (Another lighthouse song, yay!) Slightly messy when the second voice comes in. Guitar could be a bit tighter throughout.
JoAnn Abbott
I'm sorry, I really can't stand this style. I want some music, at least a metronome. The pitch shift sounds very odd too. You have a good singing voice and seem to be a decent lyric writer...
Cave Dwellers
Loving the second singer Nice lyrics, nice bubbly song. Great solo, and nice calm down after. Like.
Chocolate Chips
Like the high pass vocals and the organ, very ELO. The song as a whole didn't grab my attention too much.
Cookie Blue
The intro made me sit up. Great instrumentation, the xylophone, bass and vocals really play together well. Nice doubled vocals too. Loving this bass line. Not a massive fan of the up-octave second vocals, but they're not too bad. Sudden ending, ooh. Great song, falls down towards the end a bit, but very nice overall.
DJ Ranger Den
Turn the volume up a bit next time. Nice vocal melody, very well sung. Charming plinky song. Like.
Ghost Pup
Interesting take on the challenge. Too much of a novelty, the song is not really enjoyable for me. Fairly well executed though.
Ken Mahru
Quality here. Very well recorded, mixed, sung. Well paced, there is just enough room here. Like the rhythm of the vocals. Nice UFO solo. This is a contender.
Ben Krieger
Fairly slick entry, high in the pack, but suffers a bit from coming after Ken. I like the bass, groovy. The pervasive hihat triplets are starting to annoy me, not sure they fit the rest of the song. I like this synth line. Guitar swell, yum.
Levitt Down
Loving the lyrics. Great rhythm and pace. Well sung. Decent guitar, proper folky. A simple song, I like it a lot.
Ligers With Attitude
This chord progession is immediately making me think novelty song. Mostly competent banjo, perhaps could have done with another take. Bass equally decent, but occasionally sloppy. Great harmonies. Lyrics just wash past me, like a big river. Good overall, good.
Manhattan Glutton
Contender. Great structure, great style. Bass is punchy and restrained. Lovely vocals, excited and well delivered. Spicy guitar solo, tasteful effects. Sweet ending.
Merisan
Very competent entry. Well played, sung, etc. A little bit plodding, uninspiring. Some nice "ahhhs", solo is cool.
Nick M Soma
I like the sort of Irish style. A bit of variety in this competition always pleases me. Great mix, great variety through the song. Vocals are a treat, lyrics sound heartfelt.
Paco Del Stinko
So stylish, macabre. Weird chord progressions, not totally bad, but sometimes a bit jarring. So stylish. I like it. Super bass vocals. Almost funny, but you pull it off.
Pigfarmer Jr
The computer voice almost works. Almost. Weird choice with the 2001 story line. A bit too much like a cnoversation with a guitar in the background.
Rabid Garfunkel
Creepy, brilliant intro. The vocals clatter in a bit for me. Lyrics are super, the melody is not for me. I prefer the higher register. The plinky bits and what is that stringed instrument? I love it. Top marks for going there.
Ross Durand
Another entry in the big book of Ross Durand. You do this style very well but I feel like I have heard this song before. So slick, I am jealous.
The Tydon Docks
I like the style, the song is well written I feel. Not quite enough energy in the vocals to make it beleivable. The quiet bit makes more sense. Great chainsaw effect It is a good song, slightly not my taste, but decent. Funny talky bits at the end, made me smile.
Vincent Von F
Nice. Pleasant.... I've listened twice now in order to try to pick out some comments. Nice harmonies, nice drifting style. It kind of washes over me like a warm shower, very pleasant if a bit unremarkable.
Zack Facco
Lovely style, sincere. The high register really breaks the mood Too screechy, and the clipping makes it worse. The guitar and slowness is fantastic though.

It's a saz, a middle eastern guitarish thing. I'm a big fan of Rolfe Kent (in this case, the Dexter theme). Thanks!adamadamant wrote:what is that stringed instrument? I love it.

One thing, the notes I'm singing on that song are not high at all, I guess I just have a high sounding voice since everyone commented on that aspect. Those are all in the middle of the vocal range. Highest note I could find is G (maybe G#) below middle C. Guess pueberty didn't go well for me

Re: Nur Ein IX- Round One
I feel your pain, dude. Growing up, I'd always had a high-pitched voice, and I thought some time in my teens I would lose my voice for a week or so and it would come back sounding deeper and more "adult."josh wrote:One thing, the notes I'm singing on that song are not high at all, I guess I just have a high sounding voice since everyone commented on that aspect. Now I'm 28, and my voice is indeed deeper than it used to be, but I'd say my range wasn't really affected until I turned maybe 25.
Don't worry, though. I've learned along the way that it's not all about how deep your voice is, it's more about how confident you can sound in it. Own what your voice sounds like, and it'll fit with whatever style you try.

Re: Nur Ein IX- Round One
My apologies for the accapella version again- I had to leave Thursday for a 4 day convention in Canada I was teaching at, and didn't have time to figure out an accompaniment or to get someone to do backing for me ( though I did have a friend who tried! Thanks John!). I am trying to learn how to add midi music via Anvil studio, and hope to get better at it in the future.
