"Name check" can be the name of the lead singer or the name of the band.

Here are some examples:

Further examples from Song Fight & Nur Ein history:
Kompressor - "Don't Dance"
Manhattan Glutton - "Your Light No Longer Shines" (Nur Ein IX, Round 1)
Jon Eric - "Looking Glass" (Nur Ein VIII, Round 1)

Feel free to contribute other examples if any should come to mind.

Also feel free to ask any questions you might have. If you've ever been in a Nur Ein before, you probably know that the challenges are often worded in a way to provide room for multiple interpretations, and the five judges don't always necessarily agree on what the challenge entails (or how important it is to the judging process) anyway, so answers won't necessarily be straightforward, but I will do my best to address any questions you bring up in this thread.

I can't believe your examples didn't include Iron Maiden by Iron Maiden from the album Iron Maiden.
or Big Country by Big Country from the album Big Country.

fun challenge!

Indeed, those are notable omissions, and obviously both would have counted!

In all fairness, he'd already included Bad Company by Bad Company from Bad Company which sadly didn't make it into the soundtrack of 2002's "Bad Company".

Though, as a decent consolation prize, it was on the soundtrack to 2001's Scotland, PA.

Where's the controversy? When I tune in to Nur Ein, I expect some gnashing of teeth and crocodile tears (mostly from J$—he's very sensitive).

J$'s a judge this year, so he'll be causing more teeth gnashing and crocodile tears than committing. Besides, this is only 21 hours into Fight 0...

I am trying a new tack this time round - this year I will be docking voting points from a) people who piss me off with inane whining/squeeing on the threads and b) Manhattan Glutton.

Got round one in. I think it's the longest song I've ever written at about six minutes. Sorry judges :-) I'd actually written out lyrics for a country song first, but got frustrated and somehow it became mellow psychedelic pop. Only really kept a couple of lines.

A few bands have entered with different names in different years (ex: Oystercatcher/Boop Boop, Tydon Docks/Sid Denison and the Harpooners) but we've never had a midstream name change.

@Jon: Haha, I totally understand! If it helps, you can easily skip verse two and the second chorus and rejoin at the bridge. You won't miss anything. In fact, verse two contains the worst vocal section of the song, so it'd probably help me out voting wise to listen that way :-)

There was one, actually. In Nur Ein V, Wages entered round zero as a solo act, then changed to Hoglen & Wages for the rest of the competition. I don't recall this being a huge deal, since in some ways round zero "doesn't count." If I recall correctly, Ross was a little peeved about it but nobody else minded.

That said, if you change your band name in this round just for the sake of a good lyric and then change it back for the rest of the competition, that would leave a pretty bad taste in this judge's mouth. I acknowledge that Sam was probably joking, but I just wanted to make that clear for everyone.

besides "Funk-Ed" rhymes with "Lunkhead", I wish I had that rhyme available.

This is not supported in the database software. Please file an enhancement request and we'll get right on it... never.
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

Obviously I was joking, but only kind of. In these early rounds, we have 20-25 songs to listen to, preferably several times in 48 hours, and rank in order. It's easy to develop "listening fatigue" when there are so many songs, and if one of them is significantly longer than the rest, the judges might not be inclined to view it charitably.

That said, I'm no stranger to the long Nur Ein song, myself.

See "Stranded," Nur Ein V Round 1 (my entry clocks in at 5:50), and "The Best Place In Town is Also the Darkest," Nur Ein VII Round 2 (my entry clocks in at 5:59). "Stranded" did okay in the rankings, "Best Place in Town" didn't. It's a risk you run.

I also once turned in a nine-and-a-half-minute song for SpinTunes. I might be a little crazy sometimes.

In short: Good luck to you!
