Greetings! It's our first post, but here's a belated nein for Round 0

Hmm. Correction:
"Your post looks too spamy for a new user, please remove off-site URLs."

So here are the lyrics, and an upload.

Standing on the Edge
Dr. Lindyke

I’m standing on the edge
On the ledge outside my window
Rapt, in contemplation
Of the troubles I’ve been into
I don’t need a conversation
To try to talk me down
Soon Dr. Lindyke ain’t gonna be around.

I don’t get no inspiration
From reporters on TV
I didn’t start the conflagration
And it won’t end with me
Like Hamlet’s slings and arrows
Misfortune’s stalking me
And all who choose to see or not to see

If I had a sense of purpose
Aimed at cleaning up the street
Would I have a bigger impact
With my face or on my feet?
I think that we all know the answer
And so I dust my hands
And leave the ledge to fly to better lands

If history repeats,
We’re gonna play this scene again
With the lemmings queued behind me
Pretending to be men
Overcoming minds divided
By those who'd drive a wedge
They’ll take their places standing on the edge

Hey! Welcome! I'm a newbie to the boards, too. Looks like your songwriting skills are way beyond mine, though. Great work! I'll post mine here later. Take care!

So apparently there is no rule against judges posting Nein songs. Yeah, I rushed it. Yes, I know the lyric is sexist and looks to have been written by a 15 year old boy. No, I am not sorry.

Dr Lindyke Standing on the Edge - love those drums. Maybe overall a little self-conscious / trying too hard for my tastes but an enjoyable listen! I think the BVs / Doubling at the end pushes the limits of the mix. I really like the 'direct' take on the title (and accompanying picture on the MP3) - it's interesting - not quite the blues song it pretends it is but also not quite the Ben Folds travesty of the blues it could of been. Very, very interesting and I would like / look forward to hearing more, around the place.

Pigfarmer Jr - Average Circus - the only thing that could be more meta than this is me reviewing myself - but here we go ... the drums are a bit simplistic, take the complexity out of / edge off the guitar playing for me. Vocal sounds great. I'd have liked the lyric if the verse was all 'trouser snake' bravado then the chorus was 'I'm all talk, no trousers / I'm the clown who lies about the size of his shoes / just another average circus-worker / who claims his top's the biggest you can choose' .. something like that, that reflects the real anxieties of a 15-year old boy. But hey, I'm half-old and half-smart. I liked it - cute song.

Here is my Banshee nein. There were like three more things I wanted to do with this song (intro words from a random stranger finding a phone with a video, an actual sung chorus instead of just a blank music space, better monster laugh and out-tro), but I felt I should just be done and get on with my Jamaica song. Thanks for listening!

Lyrics here.

John Disk0 - Brilliant name, by the way! Not a huge fan of nerdcore (this is that, right)? That backing track is great. I'm not really following the lyric on the first listen, but it doesn't matter so much, as vocally it works - the tone sits well with the backing track. You probably want to find a chorus hook just to take the edge off of the 'not my bag' resistance. Maybe if I took the time to read the lyric, it would all fall into place but I'm a new historian - put it in the track, why expect me to do the research, as the listener? Anyway, that was pretty cool. Lacked a big punch in the musical face to take it from good to great, but good album track nonetheless ...

IVeg (Banshee) - I'm assuming this is a GTA reference. The mix is nailed down but this '90s referencing, 'make everyone happy' sound is not what I want / what makes me happy. What I like from my veggies is a weird but fantasticly catchy arrangement.. This is all a bit ordinary. Good but I wouldn't have scored it very high. I like its shortness but I've forgotten its melodic content in the time it took to finish this review which is not what I've come to expect from IVeg.

Iveg (2 day Shadow) - maybe I'm prejudiced but this 1985-era Depeche Mode sound suits you so much better. Not suggesting you should get stuck in one sound but also you need to recognise where your strengths lie and develop that sound into something breath-taking, rather than tooling around trying to find a sound that works better than the sound you have that works best of all. Anyway, that's just a rant. I hate meta-lyrics, so you would have lost points there, balanced out by the catchy mood you create. Seriously, you may think it's funny, I just hear self-pity. But I'm cruel like that.

J$ - Thanks so much for the reviews! Your reviews of Nein VIII helped me so much. I wanted to thank you again for those.
This year was my best, actually. I was much happier with the overall songs, and I made it one round further.

Banshee. When I found out that there was an ATV that had been clocked at >120 mph, I thought, "Where could I even drive it?" Most of the roads here have a speed limit of 45. But Oprah has a private road. I guess there have been more than a few keys made, but I don't have one. I used to play a lot of Car Wars, and read "A Nice Morning Drive" for inspiration.

Shadow. I felt bummed, but on the equivalent of a hangnail. I can see how it sounds like self pity. I wrote it to sound like self-pity, and sang it like self-pity. :)

Sticking with Depeche Mode sound? There's so much other music I like. Some songs need a different feel. Anything happy :)

J$ - you're confusing me with Chocolate Chips? They've done five songs three times. I've done four twice, and five this year. Plus Nein, because it was such a good learning experience.

I agree about meta songs. If this had been for the competition, i would have struggled to come up with something less meta. When I finish Jamaica, I may try a different Shadow. Or not :D

j$,

Thank you so much for your review! I totally appreciate everything you said. As much as I try for nerdcore, sometimes it comes out just nerd, or even worse, nerdbore. I will, however, keep looking for that "punch in the musical face"!

J$ - I know. No prob. Thanks for taking the time to do reviews.

Johndisk0: The intro voices were so cool. The whole back track was jam full of good samples. I was hoping for something more melodic - either a chorus or even just a melodic hook. Tho there is a part that's sticking in my brain, so that's good. I laughed at the ending. That's all chopped up game soundtracks? Very cool idea.

iVeg,

You have no idea how much I wanted to do a melodic chorus. I wrote the lyrics for it, but spent too much time on the audio cutting that I had to let it go to work on my Jamaica track. Thanks for the review! I really appreciate it.

I gotta say I'm with j$ when I thought your Banshee track was a GTA reference :) I was totally floored to hear (what I thought were) video game references from another artist. Your song was toe-tapping fun!

If I had known about the GTA Banshee, I might have used it. That's a sweet looking 3d model, and is closer to "A Nice Morning Drive" MGB convertible than the Yamaha Banshee ATV.
Now back to writing Jamaica... :)

Oh, there are a few video game songs out there in the archives...

There might even be one or two that aren't by The Frontalittle Squad.

Here's my "Outnumbered" Mostly 5/4, with some 7/4. I think this is the first song I *INTENTIONALLY* wrote in an odd time sig.

LYRICS:
All alone, all alone - they can't see you
I stagger along the path, bloody from the aftermath, weary soul, limping home
They scream that I'm beaten, still on my feet and they think they're winning, only beginning, infinite laughter, they're so outnumbered.
I'm trying to heal the rift, whisper of a dying gift, til the end, love again
