The Dream Crusher - Paco del Stinko
The Dream Crusher, destroyer of dreams
You think he's alright but he ain't what he seems
He takes your dreams and crushes'em, and he can't get enough of'em
The Dream Crusher
Not everyone sleeps at night although we mostly do
Sometimes times get tough for all of us you start looking beyond what's true
Endless credit, no more debt
Lying on the beach with no sweat
A fancy car, a mansion on the hill
A private jet, a cocaine thrill
Who is this guy you say
Well it's really hard to explain
But I'm going to try to anyway
Who's the only guy that can derail your train - it's you
It's you-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya you
Some people think more modest they see the sights
Now most of us stay in mediocracy but what happens when we turn out the lights
Pay for college, see the Louvre
Parachute and inner tube
Buy a dude ranch, city suite
Endless banquet, golden seat
Someone won't let you turn off the light

Boy
Beautiful baby boy
Bright and blazing bolt, jumping jolt of joy
In love
In love with the world all around you
Every moment a miracle, the sights and the sounds all astound you
But they’re gonna pluck you like a rose right from the garden
They’ll say the softest parts of you all need to harden
They’ll offer continents to conquer, crowns to wear
If you give up the parts of you that feel and care
They’re gonna throw you in the dream crusher
They’re gonna pull you apart
They’re gonna tear you down, they’re gonna throw you around
They’re gonna break your heart
They’re gonna throw you in the dream crusher
Rip you up at the seams
Turn you from a sacred work of art
To just another moving part in their machine
They’re gonna crush your dreams
Girl
Glorious glittering girl
Flying free with your fearsome flag unfurled
In love
In love with the body you’re given
Wherever you roam, you’re at home in the skin that you live in
But they’re gonna tell you you’ve been broken all along
Point out how every single piece of you is wrong
They’re gonna laugh at every hope you ever cherished
Say all you need is four white horses and a carriage
They’re gonna throw you in the dream crusher
They’re gonna pull you apart
They’re gonna tear you down, they’re gonna throw you around
They’re gonna break your heart
They’re gonna throw you in the dream crusher
Rip you up at the seams
Turn you from a sacred work of art
To just another moving part in their machine
They’re gonna crush your dreams
Child
Cherished and chosen child
Beloved
Wise and wondrous and wild
Stay
Stay in love with yourself
Stay in love with the world, and with everyone else
There’s so much poison that they’ll try to make you swallow
There’s so much noise, but every word of it is hollow
They want your tenderness, my love, they want your pride
They’ve got a box that they want you to fit inside
Don’t let them throw you in the dream crusher
Don’t let them pull you apart
Don’t let them tear you down, don’t let them throw you around,
Don’t let them break your heart
Don’t let them throw you in the dream crusher
Rip you up at the seams
Turn you from a sacred work of art

The Dream Crusher
by Lichen Throat
I thought about what if things had been different,
If I’d got a degree in English, not engineering,
Or moved to Seattle, not to Albuquerque.
What would my life be like right now?
Would I have done something greater?
Would I be living on an island in the Puget Sound?
Would I have fallen asleep in my pool and drowned?
Would I be different man?
When I was 27, these things bothered me.
You may wonder if I’ve settled in, complacently.
I’ve just made my peace with uncertainty.
Sometimes at work I talk to the younger people and
They talk about the existential crises they have, and
I can tell that they don’t know how much
Better they’ll probably feel in just a few more years.
I think about what I’m doing every day,
This morning, I woke up and did a load of laundry,
And while my wife was at her yoga class,
I recorded the guitar for this song.
It’s obvious that I don’t know how to play.
My fingers seem too fat and too short,
But I’m six foot four, so that’s probably wrong;
Anyway, I doubt I’ll ever get that good.
I watched a movie with my wife in the afternoon,
Then I picked up some Vietnamese food;
Now I’m trying to finish this tune.
Is this the best use of my time, lounging around
In a shirt I got free at a blood drive,
Recording songs with wayward melodies
That maybe 20 people will ever listen to,
And eating cheese curds at 10 o’clock at night?
I gotta say, I think it’s a good choice,
Even if I don’t have the greatest voice.
It’s my way of making a joyful noise;
Better to create than destroy.
There’s more to do than I could fit in 30 lifetimes.
Thousands of choices can all be right,
Not to say that you can’t choose wrong,
But so much of the world is so good.
You can do anything, but not everything.
Don’t think you can walk along the perfect path;
That’s the only dream you have to crush.

The Dream Crusher by Vom Vorton
I saw you standing there
your eyes full of tears
they looked like shining stars
I’d had too many beers
You had been married but
it had come to an end
I saw opportunity
You only wanted a friend
You were keen to talk
it was getting late
I figured what the hell
I was willing to wait
I know you’re special
but I don’t wanna rush ya
cos you had your heart broken
by a dream crusher
And I know how that feels
so I guess I feel sorry for you
You said you left him
cos he didn’t understand you
and drew a thick line
through all the things you planned to do
Ambition, baby
is one thing I do not lack
I said with two fingers
crossed behind my back
All I really wanted
was somewhere to sit down
But I could not confess
as a smile replaced your frown
everything you said
was painful and true
I recognised your pain
because I had been there too
I made excuses
I even lied
I’d seen the situation
from the other side
and I don’t want you to know
that I’m a dream crusher too
I saw you standing there
your eyes full of tears
they looked like shining stars
I’d had too many beers

I had a dream of a world without borders
I had a vision of life without walls
In Berlin I saw how the future could be brighter
Hope for tomorrow and love for us all
But in 2016 that dream died
We the people bought a lie
And the men with the money and the suits and the ties and the newspapers are crushing my dreams again
It might sound obscene, but the truth is a burden
Why check your facts when a story trumps all
Why blame yourself when there’s always one poorer
Who wants what you have and will work twice as hard
Make America hate again
Tell us Mexicans rape again
And the men with the money and the suits and the ties and the newspapers are crushing my dreams again
And the men with the money and the suits and the ties and the guns and the tanks and the bombs and the lawyers and the hedge funds and the tv shows and the dog whistles are crushing my dreams again
