Right Town, Wrong Address:
A semi-faithful retelling of the events of 24 June 2018

On a June Sunday Morning
My son and I were riding our scooters
We were rolling along
That’s when we saw the doggy

Her body lying in the street

A sensation of sorrow
But I could not say that I was surprised
More than once, she’d caused me to slam the brakes.
That puppy was suicidal

Now the owners are grieving and they’re feeling distressed
They’re looking for the murderer without much success
So they asked one of their neighbors if they’d wager a guess
They falsely blamed it on the Hyundai parked at my address
So we’re targets for their ire and there’s no due process
Cause we’re in the right town but at the wrong address
And that’s where this story really begins!

So they’ve piled into
Their white utility van
Now the daughter’s knocking
She asked me if I'd seen anything

I told her that I'd seen the dog

And that i'd had to brake before
Blunder after blunder!
They see my mother's Veloster
They're thinking that I'm to blame!

And they're pissed off and they're angry and they're grieving I guess
But they've got a grievance and they're seeking redress
So they're calling us negative epithets
I'm being pushed and shoved and I'm under duress
I shout "Get out of my yard or it's a legal transgression
Cause you're in the right town but at the wrong address"
I said you're in the right town but the wrong address

Later i summoned an officer
He said "I've known them forever"
"In fact I'm friends with one of his daughters!"
"They're really fine people"

What's the point in calling in an SOS
When everything I say you second guess
The guy was in the driveway causing me distress
Guess that is not enough for you to be impressed
I've got a big day tomorrow and I'm feeling the stress
Don't wanna deal with the people at the wrong address
I said they're in the right town but at the wrong address, oh no.

Balance Lost

You're working all day
As I watch the clouds pass
I need to borrow some money
There's a thing I gotta get, no questions asked

My aspirations are not important
I'll play Nintendo whenever I want
And those bigger houses you pass on your commute
The people in them are no happier than you
No happier than me
And they've got secrets too
I'm all I wanna be

Kites are circling
And they smell blood
I'll make sure it's neither of us
They find face down in the mud

There ain't no part of town that can escape the rain
Whatever television, the shows are still the same
And those bigger houses you pass on your commute
The people in them are no happier than you
No happier than me
And people still protest
In a strong economy

My aspirations are not important
I'll play Nintendo whenever I want
And those bigger houses you pass on your commute
The people in them are no happier than you
No happier than me
And they've got secrets too
I'm all I wanna be
No happier than you
No happier than me
And people still protest
In a strong economy

Ya got trouble
Right here in River City
And that starts with T
And that rhymes with P
And that stands for
Pneumonia

The Department of Health
Has sent me to say
That you've all got
To change your ways
You're going out
Without a hat
Without a scarf
We can't have that

As a result
City Council is recommending
More indoor recreational spaces

Ya got trouble
Right here in River City
And that starts with T
And that rhymes with P
And that stands for
Pneumonia

Right Town, Wrong Address - Hot Pink Halo

***

It was a normal day in
Old Fitzroy Town
Pulling stacks from the shelves
Sending paper all around the joint
Came back from a break
Found no one around
Just an open envelope sitting there
On the counter
Addressed to the shop
No name in sight
So I took out the guts
And imagine my surprise to find

You sent your Rolls Royce
Down Grievance Street
Coulda been a mistake
Until you repeated it
You sent your Rolls Royce
But we're not impressed
You got the right town
Wrong address

Our cardboard covered benches
Were full of supplies
JD was on the boombox
Singing about vampires
Your package was a mystery
Full of tiny stamps
No note to explain it
Was it letterpress for ants?
Two Rs interlocked
Inside a jewel case
Led to an internet search
That I never thought I'd do at work

You sent your Rolls Royce
Down Grievance Street
Coulda been a mistake
Until you repeated it
You sent your Rolls Royce
But we're not impressed
You got the right town
Wrong address

I don't know the whole story
I'm making bits up
You're typecast in the villain role
Out of sorts, draining souls
Life's on deckled edges
Now you're a cliché
So I'll cut to the chop
We took your package to the copper shop

It was a normal day in
Old Fitzroy Town
Pulling stacks from the shelves
Sending paper all around the joint
Came back from a break
The post had arrived
And another envelope sat on
The table to the side
Addressed to the shop
No name in sight
So I opened it up and was
Not at all surprised to find

You sent your Rolls Royce
Down Grievance Street
Coulda been a mistake
Until you repeated it
You sent your Rolls Royce
So we shut the front door
Cos we've got a Rolls already
And we don't want yours

You sent your Rolls Royce
Down Grievance Street
Coulda been a mistake
Until you repeated it
You sent your Rolls Royce
But we're not impressed
You got the right town
Wrong address

Right Town, Wrong Address
The Magnetic Letters

Pushing my cart as the sun goes down
I got the wrong address but I'm in the right town
It's a lonely life behind this vegetable cart
I guess I messed up but it's a start, I guess it's a start

A man walks out from the club next door
He's got a saxophone but he looks so forlorn
He says his mouthpiece is broken, he's about to play
I pull out my knife and I say

I got some nice big carrots
The carrot is a versatile fruit
Toss me a nickel and I'll carve a brand new mouthpiece right here for you
I'll show you what I can do

A man in a mask is running down the street
Hot on his heels is the cop on the beat
He fumbles for his truncheon but to no avail
I pull out my knife and I say

I got some nice big carrots
The carrot is a versatile fruit
Toss me a dime and I'll carve a brand new truncheon right here for you
I'll show you what I can do

So I was carving those carrots all night
And I was making my fortune all day
Knee-deep in peelings the people were willing to pay
So my 24-carrot vegetable empire was a great success
I was in the right town, it was the right town
But at the wrong address

I got some nice big carrots
The carrot is a versatile fruit
Here in this land you can carve a dream out of a carrot and it might come true

I got some nice big carrots
The carrot is a versatile fruit
This is the city where the streets are paved with orange and red, white and blue

I got some nice big carrots
The carrot is a versatile fruit
If you stand on the street corner and pull out your knife then good things might happen to you

Right Town, Wrong Address
by miscellaneous owl
  • sample from "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by T. S. Eliot, read by Robert Ortiz
  • acoustic guitar and ukulele played with roasted, unsalted whole almonds
  • melodica and keyboard cello played with celery sticks
  • shaker made of dry lentils in a jar
  • percussion made out of me eating celery

I came close enough to kiss your mouth
But I didn't
I didn't
Just my sweater lay between our hands
Far above us
The church bells rang

You were still in love with her
But I wanted you
I wanted you
And when you finally wanted me
I'd moved into
Another room

Like the right town, wrong address,
Just far enough to make it meaningless
The right words on long breaths
Fall into the dark, they're useless

I came close enough to kiss your mouth
But I didn't
I didn't
And your voice, in a minor key,
Floated over me
As I fell asleep

Is this what it is to be alive?
Watch small regrets
Passing by?
Think of what we could have been
Our lives are sweet
Are they incomplete?

A love song, drifting through the air
In an empty room with no-one there
Like the right town, wrong address,
Just far enough to make it meaningless
Just far enough to make it meaningless

(And would it have been worth it, after all,
After the cups, the marmalade, the tea,
Among the porcelain, among some talk of you and me,
Would it have been worth while,
To have bitten off the matter with a smile,
To have squeezed the universe into a ball
To roll it towards some overwhelming question,
To say: “I am Lazarus, come from the dead,
Come back to tell you all, I shall tell you all”—
If one, settling a pillow by her head
Should say: “That is not what I meant at all;
That is not it, at all.”)

(Close enough to fear what I would say
Stars spin and swing away
And your voice, in a minor key,
Floated over me
As I fell asleep
It sounded like a lullaby)

Right Town, Wrong Address
by Berkeley Social Scene

On the level
But not the right time
I knew the answer
Or so I thought -----------
Ahee yah yahee I thought

I was so certain
This search was right
But all the while
It was just spite -----------
Ahee yah yahee just spite

Oh, look at the lights here
So bright, they’re guiding me home
But I’m not yet quite there
Right town, wrong address

And so I seek
Rekindled flame
And if the embers
Can be the same -------
Oh could it be the same????

I was left hanging
My heart strings torn
If I could find you
I won't be forlorn -----
Ahee yah yahee forlorn

Oh, look at the lights here
So bright, they’re guiding me home
But I’m not yet quite there
Right town, wrong address

Oh I was here
Just looking for you
Oh I was here
Just looking for you ------
Ahee yah yahee for you

Oh, look at the lights here
So bright, they’re guiding me home
But I’m not yet quite there
Right town, wrong address

Oh, look at the lights here
So bright, they’re guiding me home
But I’m not yet quite there
Right town, wrong address

Right Town, Wrong Address
Pigfarmer jr

I was looking for a good time so I flew to Vegas
'Cause everybody knows that it's the greatest
The airplane landed in the middle of the night
I called a ride to see the lights so bright

I hit the street with my bags in tow
Looking for a hint as to where to go
I stuck my head into a hole in the wall
Where I met a cute lady by the name of Paul

Right town, wrong address
Right town, wrong address

So I kept looking for a place to get down
Looking for the best damn party around
I saw a man in leather walk through a door
With a sign that said, "Hours: Open all twenty four!"

So I walked in only to discover
A big, hairy man with a tattoo that said, "Mother!"
He made me arm wrestle, said he was the best
But my poor heart couldn't take the stress

Right town, wrong address
Right town, wrong address

So, I'm here to tell you that Vegas is rough
I didn't even get to do a whole lot of stuff
The doctor says I had a heart attack
But truth be told I can't wait to go back

Right town, wrong address
Right town, wrong address
Right town, wrong address

THIRD CAT

something inching towards the truth
it's like i'm getting closer

but I just can't track it down
I like to think I know her

I can only really take a guess

I'm in the right town, but I'm at the wrong address
I'm in the right town, but I'm at the wrong address

right town, wrong address
right town, wrong address

“I believe there are several seraphin sleeping in your attic,” said the caller, sans introduction per his custom.
I felt fear. He just appeared long bearded, but the old stars in my heart rang bells: awake, awake strange lands surrounding.
Yet my mouth spilled absurd words, “Are you sure you’ve come to the right home? This town is winding and muddling. It fucks the best of us up.”
The visitor laughed, perhaps at me, perhaps at something teetering joyfully in the twilight. Who’s to say in moments like these?
Then this man commenced to sing:

Your home is built on glowing things.
Though your eyes are beady and colliding
The seraphin have wired the walls for music.
Since you awoke, you knew you were in the right town.
But perhaps the wrong address (you thought). Perhaps you were not deserving of salvation
In forms meek, resounding, and open armed.
But Oh -

sang the long bearded stranger

Don’t believe you are the wrong address.
When I and others come knocking,
Delivering eternal starlight.

Right town, wrong address, by Slither.

“Listen to me, kid.
You know we’ve got a lot of life to live
But I don’t know that you know what you’re doing yet,”
she said.

“You’ve got to … figure it out.
You’ve got to … figure it out.
Go ahead and get busy now,
come back to me when you know what it’s about.”

I didn’t want to leave
but I had to believe
that I could just fly away
and come back to her some day.

You never left my heart.
I kept you close to me
And now it feels like the time.
I’m ready now to find you.

You know I did what she asked:
shed my skin and dropped my mask,
filled my heart with a new life,
learned to breathe and I learned to fight.

And I am finally coming home
and we will never be alone
and I knock on your door
it’s looks different than before.

You never left my heart.
I hope you waited for me.
Because now it feels like the time;
I’m ready for us — where are you?

You’ve always been in my heart.

I tore it down and cleared the debris
but even after all of this time
I feel like we've lost — have I lost you?
Lost me? Lost you? Where are you?
