Elegy for Industry - no strings attached, but if you want to hear the vibe I had in mind, PM me and maybe I can throw an mp3 together.

you feel porous
and that's not job satisfaction
your wheels are spinning
where you used to have traction
you're precocious
but you feel like a sieve
your great brain doesn't get how
gravity takes more than the
heavenly bodies can give

I
don't feel
like you

your wide open lane is a six-way merge
your lights all went out with the power surge
your elegy for industry
turned into a dirge

cold and damp
oh, you're in a rush basket
down the line
that turns into a casket
you'll be precocious
a messiah in fact
but your sacred heart will never be on track

you'll never feel like me
a shining example
an elegy for industry

I'll never feel like you
an industrial orphan
you're an example, too

if you're still in a rush
I'll catch you with Horus
if you're just feeling porous
we'll put it in the chorus

In the very likely event that I can't pull off a French rap song, je vous passe la parole :

We Keep Them Alive (On les garde vivants)

Fun tune, no time:

Sorry to Inform You

[C]I am [G]sorry to [E]inform you: [Am]every[C]thing you thought was [G]wrong, wrong
You know those people you thought raised you: they are long gone, gone
I am sorry to be the one to have to break you the bad, bad news
But someone has to break the silence: there's an elephant in the room

[D]Your [C9]world was [G]made [G]up
Every wisp: wishful thinking
Your world was sold off
This ship: swiftly sinking

I am sorry to inform you: there are no more lifeboats
I know that you're not the captain but it looks like you're gonna have to go down with this one
You can't even trust your senses when all you know gets turned around
In the jumble of the puzzle pieces you have to climb to higher ground

Your world was made up
Every wisp: wishful thinking
Your world was sold off
This ship: swiftly sinking

I am sorry to inform you: you don't even have yourself to blame
This life is like the weather: some days, sun; others, rain
I am sorry to inform you: this song is a lie
This paradox will forever haunts you; just wanted to say hello, goodbye

just wanted to say hello
hello, goodbye
just wanted to say hello
hello, goodbye

I Am A Target

Every evening it seems
It is the same old shit
And I am on the receiving end of it

My lovely lady comes through the front door
And a whole bunch of nonsense comes out her jaw

This happened, that happened
I don't care
But she keeps going on about some other bitch's hair

There's nothing I can do but take it in the face
And carry on
And pretend like I'm listening (not that it matters)

I am a target of her shit
And it shits me up the wall
I want to kick her in the teeth
But I'm not allowed

I'm just a target of her shit
That's it
And there's nothing I can do
But let a bitch be a bitch

If I came home from work
And started acting like a jerk
She wouldn't have none of it
The fucking bitch

She only has one leg
She has a false leg
I want to hit her in the face with her false leg

I want to pick her leg up while she's sleeping in our bed
And bludgeon her face
Smash her fucking skull
I want to scoop her brains up
And put them in a pillow case
And throw it out the window
Into the street

I am a target of her shit
And it shits me up the wall
I want to kick her in the teeth
But I'm not allowed

I'm just a target of her shit
That's it
And there's nothing I can do
But let a bitch be a bitch

I already have a dog in this fight, but that doesn't seem to stop my brain from spinning :

9/11 Was An Inside Job

Am-C-G-G
Am-C-E-E

"Where were you when...?" is the question of a generation
the grassy knoll, the harbor pearl
two towers in Manhattan
every moment sharp, a piercing tragedy
every moment we were caught off guard
in our dull complacency
rude morning sun
when we woke from those dreams
our deepest fears now walk the scene

our lessons paid with our neighbors' grief
what solace were we offered
by our old belief?
why do we seem so doomed to repeat
the same mistakes the same missteps
our fathers made
maybe we should listen
to our mothers instead
to their kitchen wisdom : less fear, more bread

BRIDGE
C-Fmaj7/9 x3
C-G/B-Am
travel hopefully towards future days
this is the lesson my mother gave
love your neighbor, want for no return
ignore this wisdom and New York will burn

"Where were you when...?" is the question of a generation
the grassy knoll, the harbor pearl
two towers in Manhattan
oh they may say it was an inside job
we are the ones
on the inside

"Robot Ninja Zombie Bear"

The lonely hunter takes aim at immortality
Must become stronger than the machine
No robot can match his precision
His soul stronger than the circuitry

And when the time comes, the battle is won
The hunter holds a steelheart in his hands
Raises it high for the god of war
Picks another target and marches on

The lonely hunter knows others praise the lord
And pursue the same prize
He needs not the stealth they possess
Crossing his path will only end their lives

And when the time comes, the battle is won
Warrior's heart lay in the hunter's hands
Raises it high for the god of war
Picks another target and marches on

The lonely hunter inches closer to the prize
The path is blocked by the undead
Its hunger cannot match his desire
He prepares to kill the man again

And when the time comes, the battle is won
The hunter holds a coldheart in his hands
Raises it high for the god of war
Picks another target and marches on

The lonely hunter walks the fields of glory
Faces off with instinct's purest form
Drops his weapons to challenge the beast
Hands battling the claws

And when the time comes, the battle is won
The hunter holds a bearheart in his hands
Raises it high for the god of war
Finds that he can march on no more

The lonely hunter sees a parting of the clouds
Finds himself bathed in holy light
Inhales a breath that will never leave
But also traps a fire inside

And when the time comes, all the battles are won
He longs to hold a heart in his hand
Says a prayer to the god of war
Picks another target and marches on
"I'd like to see 1984 redubbed with this in the soundtrack."- Furrypedro.

I was going to do this song, but I haven't been able to get the drums and feel right. I was inspired by the opening theme to The A-Team, with the snare roll and the spoken word introducing the characters. Here are the words if anybody wants to give it a try:

robot ninja zombie bear

(slow military style snare roll, bass intro)

robot was the most high-tech macine ever built by the u.s. government.
he was so advanced, his handlers couldn't keep him.
ninja's past was so shadowy, even he didn't know where he came from.
now he's going freelance.
zombie left the pack and became a vegetarian. now he only eats the
brains of the bad guys.
bear left the woods. but he still goes back there once a day.

they met up staking out the same organized crime family. they teamed up
and now they're the most effective crime-fighting organization out there.
too bad they couldn't come up with a better name than...

ROBOT NINJA ZOMBIE BEAR

Written for 'Dirt Nap' but no time to record. Use or modify as you wish.

Verse 1:

Forward to the future, where
Everything's clean, and
Work's a word for anything
Done by machine, got to
Get away.

Backward to a childhood, where
Everything's new, with
So much time to do it all and
Nothing to do, got to
Get away.

Chorus:
Running from, running to
Sleep in the gutter with
Me tonight
Freedom from, freedom to
Wish upon a satellite

Verse 2:
Some old show on TV, a
Simpler world, the
Hero kills the bad guy, and
Kisses the girl, got to
Find a way.

Try a foreign country, ex-
-otic and strange
Evening flaming sunset, and
Life on the range, got to
Find a way.

Bridge:
Dream kitchen
Dream home
Dream lover
Yours alone

Glamorous job
Holiday
Perfect wedding
Has to be a way

{ why is it SO hard for the "search" tools to find this thread ??? and since this thread IS in the lyric archive, could we change the "Board Index" forum descriptions so that it doesn't say it's in the fight discussions forums ??? }

Feel free to make any and all changes, restructurings, whatever. If you do decide to use this, please PM me to let me know, and if you record something and decide not to submit, I would like to get a copy from you anyway... thanks!

CRASHING CARS, AWARDING STARS
lyric by King Arthur

Inside Tom's computer, he is crashing cars
And he'll paste them into episodes five and six
Outside in the world, they are awarding stars
To the FX team that's got the coolest tricks

And nothing that you see is real anymore
None of the good stuff anyway
Nothing that you feel is for real anymore
None of the good stuff anyway

In my imagination, I have a hundred friends
And when I use those up, I can make some more
Out here in the real world, I'm a lonely boy
Truthfully, I've got no clue what friends are for

No one that I know is real anymore
None of the good ones anyway
No one that I've lost is coming back again
None of the good ones anyway

And I act like the mistakes I make
Can be undone in that second take
Though the ways I fail should bother me
They can't be fixed so easily

In the lies I tell I've done alright
Though I haven't really made the grade
Success lives in the loser's dreams
That's how he thinks the game is played

And nothing that I've done matters any more
None of the fake stuff, anyway
Nothing here that touches me is real anymore
None of the good stuff anyway

None of the good stuff anyway
None of the good stuff anyway

With such a short deadline this round, maybe this will be of use to some of the less prolific lyricists among us... as always, tweeze as you pleeze, but if you get anything recorded, I would like to get a copy, even if it doesn't get submitted... I'm imagining this as a Clapton-y blues-rock thing with lots of room for guitar solos, but do what you will with it...

AFTER HOURS
King Arthur

After hours and hours of trying to call you
You're still not letting me through
After hours and hours of thinking it over,
I know I must've done something, but I ain't got a clue.

These are the blues that a man gets
When a woman is crying and he don't know what to say
These are the blues that a man gets
When the one that he loves says she's going away

I'd try listening and listening if that's what you wanted
But you seem to think I can just figure this out
I'd try listening and listening to any explanation
'Cause right now I don't get what you're talking about

These are the blues...

I'd sit up with you long into the night
If I thought that's what it takes to make things right

These are the blues...

Face has started hurting again (I'll probably be in for neurosurgery in two or three weeks to finally fix this), so I know I won't be recording anything with this, so, if anybody can use it... it's a pretty long and complicated story, feel free to trim it way back or sing the words really quickly :-) If you do use it, please let me know, and if you do something with it but don't get it in for the fight, please send me even a rough demo when you get something.

VIA SUNDERLAND

(from the Broadway musical "Insourced" ???)

(chorus)
Take me to the airport via Sunderland
And stop at every stoplight
And take it really slow -
'Cause they're sending me to Cleveland
In the middle of the winter, but if I can miss my flight
I'm hoping I won't have to go.

I finally found employment
I'm in Customer Support
For this company that's doing
Interfaces of some sort
In the language of the androids
Tracking therapies and pills
And appointments and procedures,
And sending out a lot of bills.
But this hospital in Cleveland
Says it isn't working right
So I'm flying all this afternoon
So I can work all night tonight.

(chorus)

Despite my worst intentions,
We'll be landing in an hour
They got snowplows on the runways
We've got clearance from the tower
Some one named Ronnie is a-waiting
Thirty thousand feet below
No time for dinner, right off the plane, to
Huron Hospital we go.
It turns out Ronnie is a lady
With a very pretty face
And I think we sorta hit it off
In a software engineer geeky kind of way.

(bridge)
And the problem solved itself
The way computer problems do
So now I'm flying home Southwestern
Ronnie's standby on Jet Blue.

I'd have liked a proper breakfast
Once the job was done,
But it's two ventis from the Starbucks
And half a Cinnabon.
I'm in 27B,
But at least I'm on the flight
I try to laptop up a trip report
But my brain's not working right.
The stewardess awakens me,
The plane is on the ground
I'm fighting for my carry on
And then I'm homeward bound.

(Get me) home from the airport,
Stay off Sunderland, cheat on every yellow
Hell, cheat on all the reds
'Cause I'm coming home from Cleveland
I've been up for 40 hours
And all I want is to
Get home to my bed.

DISCO TONY
lyric by King Arthur

note 1: the word "discotony" is pronounced like "monotony,"
and refers to... a style of music where all the songs sound the same :-)
Perhaps "Disco Tony" is the un-mentioned name of the "singer" of this
one...

note 2: the "Ark of Philadelphia" is an obscure R&B group from
the 1970s whose single cassette release was celebrated on 2/29/08
on Songfight!

note 3: obviously, I'm hoping somebody will do something BeeGees with
this rather than rapping it over fruityloops, but... make of it what you
will...

Feel free to make any and all changes, improvements, etc. I think the
phrase-length in v2 doesn't quite match v1, feel free to fix it either way...

DISCO TONY

The human mind tends to categorize music into styles
Something new and innovative comes along,
And people dig it for a while.
And then the music moves on and the people do too
But in every generation there are always a few
Who've found the music they're always gonna like
Who say, "this is where I'm drivin' my spike..."

(chorus)
And my magic moment came
In the middle of the nineteen seventies
You can say the songs all sound the same
But I'm diggin' the discotony.

Something 'bout the Bee Gees
Touched me and took over control;
The Ark of Philadelphia
Released the animal in my soul.
I wore out my Village People albums
Long before they wore out their appeal -
KC and the Sunshine Band, the Jacksons,
and Pattie LaBelle;
Gloria Gaynor and Gladys Knight
Whatever they were doin' they were doin' it right.

(chorus)

(outro)
Doctor, doctor,
I get the fever every Saturday;
Play it over and over, I'm just
Digging the discotony.

These are the songs that flow through my
Heart repeatedly...
Play 'em over and over, I'm just
Digging the discotony.

I'm away from the recording equipment, so won't be able to do anything with it in time for the fight... change, add, drop anything you like, just give me co-writer credit.

ASHES / lyric by King Arthur

(chorus)
{ When my life ain't nothing but a box of ashes
Well, I hope my song
Will still be loud and strong. } 2x

(v1)
Twenty seven years seems to be about the time
When a rock 'n' roll heart starts thinkin' 'bout dyin'
Well, I'm long past that so we'll just have to wait and see
How much longer you're gonna have to put up with me.

(chorus)

(v2)
Every smoke I smoke, every drink I drain
Every time I climb up on stage in the rain
I'm one day closer to the end of the line
But it's one more day for my songs to shine.

(chorus)

(optional bridge)
Bury me not out on the lonely prairie
Spread me 'round the Bay
So I can hang out with Jerry.

Here's a song I wrote it's called The Second Hand Shop you can have it if you want

Hey yo yo yo check it
I went to the second hand store to buy a record
There was a woman in there who was buying a dress
She walked into me Like she didn't even see
You can believe me when I say that I was not impressed

The Only French I Know

Overheard what you said, It was rather pedantic
When you told your friend, You thought French was romantic
How shallow you can be?, God only knows
But that won't stop me, From buying Rosetta Stone

Cause the only French I know
Won't help make you mine
Because I can't win your heart
With a nursery rhyme
[Frère Jacques]

When I look back, to what we could have been
If I'd only taken French, instead of Latin
Fat lot of good, that language did for me
Didn't even help much, on my SATs

Cause the only French I know
Won't help me one bit
Because I won't win your heart
with Jimmy Buffet
["Chanson Pour Les Petits Enfants" chorus]

So I studied every day, and I got pretty good
Lets just say my intentions, would be understood
I bought a beret, started to smoke and drank red wine
Grew a mustache, and wore shirts with blank an' white lines

Cause the only French I knew
Wouldn't serve me that well
Because I can't win your heart
With that song by Labelle
["Lady Marmalade" chorus]

Can't say my plan failed, but I have to conclude
It just worked way too well, because I found her loud and way too rude
I grew sick of Americans, I found them dumb and quite dangerous
that's why I didn't look back as I boarded my flight to Paris

Free lyrics, if anyone wants. You can change them if you like. I don't care.

Push It

The kind of man you like to see
never pushes when you're clean
he always waits until you're dirty
until you're hurt
until you're mean
before he'll push it
push it in

He may come to you in the evening
in the midst of cocaine dreams
He might wrestle you with alcohol
or promises of better things
But he has to have you in the end
upside down or outside in
and groomed for this by being broken
you always let him push it in
and he pushes it
again

Don't pull on me with promises
Don't pull on me with tears
I know that it's my destiny
to follow you for years
like a silent queen's valet
You needn't tell me anything
to pull me on my way

It breaks my heart not to tell you
even though I know you know
that when these fuckers finally fail you
and you have no place to go,
there's always me
there's always me

But I guess
I'd better not push it.

I like this song - a lot, actually - but I won't have the time to record it anywhere approaching properly by Sunday. So, I'll loan anyone these:

all kinds of sorrow
are headed my your way
all kinds of sorrow
hey...

i opened up my eyes & there you were a-standin'
what a beauty to behold - winged nike ain't got nothin'
i opened up my ears to hear you there a-singin'
could have been the seraphim - but next to you they're just wind and

all kinds of sorrow
are headed my way
all kinds of sorrow
hey...

i opened up my mind & there you were a-starin'
your gaze transfixed me - no aegis; i am no Jason
i opened up my heart let you in let you walk around
took you to my bed but in the morning you were nowhere to be found

all kinds of sorrow
are headed my way
all kinds of sorrow
hey...

they say what does not kill you
but you know they like to lie
they have had their share of sorrow
they have had their try
i drink sadness like ambrosia
melancholy is my friend
this blue shadow that you're trailing:
our beginning is its end

all kinds of sorrow
are headed my way
all kinds of sorrow
hey...

I have ideas for a different song that may get made, but I did think of this.

This would be EBM or other bass-heavy techno.

As a side note: My father really is in to DJing, electronic/techno music and women younger than his children... and has literally said, "Some people are freaks. They just come that way." If someone picks this song up, that line should be said by someone else (and probably a male) for full effect. I'd be happy to lend my voice to that part if need be.

Being techno, I would expect parts of these lyrics could easily repeat. It's not like that sort of music needs a lot of unique lyrics to make a song.

I'm not going to do anything with these lyrics any time soon, so if someone reads them and gets inspired to do something totally different with it, that would still be awesome. The lyrics -- as they currently stand -- imply some sort of music that one may DJ. If someone feels inspired to turn it in to something totally different that would be fine, too.

(lyrics follow)

I have this recurring dream.
I'm reuniting with my father.

Some people are freaks. They just come that way.

He's DJing. He's surrounded by young girls.
I have this recurring dream.
He can't hear me, but I can hear him.

Some people are freaks. They just come that way.

I don't know what to say.

Some people are freaks. They just come that way.

So I go away.

Make The First Move scrapped draft

Postby FormerDominator » Tue Mar 05, 2013 5:20 pm

Here's a little somethin-somethin I whipped up, never finished, and scrapped for this week's contest. If they speak to you or whatever and you pick 'em up and finish 'em, just gimmie some co-writer credit ("Lyrics by [you] and Michael Joseph"):

"Make the First Move" (Take One)
Lyrics by Michael Joseph

From this distance
It almost seems as though you might be
Looking back at me
Well there I go again
Seeing things that aren't there

You fool, you fool,
You fool, you know there's
One thing you can do
I know, I know, I know
That's why I
Can't just speak to you

CHORUS
Why can't I ever make the first move?
Why can't I ever make the first move?
I guess your eyes just shut me down

"That's the Joke"

No one knows how to throw
A party like you do
The radiance of the night
Makes everything seem brand new
And all the world's woes
Seem to fade as we dance
I can almost forget
Nothing good ever lasts

And that's the joke
One day we'll be the punchline
Reversals of fortune
Bound to come sometime

This is a night of riches
Fancy clothes and champagne
If there's a war outside
It feels half a world away
We self-medicate
Become numb to all the pain
And never notice this moment (is)
Creeping closer to the grave

And that's the joke
One day we'll be the punchline
Reversals of fortune
Bound to come sometime

And we all raise a glass
Praise to the good life
As long as the music plays
Everything will be alright
But this won't stay forever
The time comes to go home
All the glory fades
And we're all alone

And that's the joke
One day we'll be the punchline
Reversals of fortune
Bound to come sometime

Overcast

Mirror mirror on the wall
Nothing in this life is fair
So hide the things you love
The end is near
Dark clouds flood the sky
The sun won't rise today
And tomorrow will only come to
The lucky and the brave

This is black magic
The rise of the coven
Armageddon comes
When the skies darken

The day's dark as the night
As cities begin to burn
God cannot hear the prayers
For the sun to return
The cold wind cries out
Prepare for the worst
There is no salvation
The whole world is cursed

This is black magic
The rise of the coven
Armageddon comes
When the skies darken

They ride on the wind
Hell in their wake
Lives lived in sin
Will not be safe
The fools on the hill
Will feel their power
Under overcast skies
Comes the witching hour

This is black magic
The rise of the coven
Armageddon comes
When the skies darken

EDIT 2 -- I ended up entering the fight with these lyrics.
EDIT -- I added a verse. And lyric burgles are still welcome, but I think I have a song.

Bully

(I'm having trouble coming up with the right music for these lyrics. I'm still trying, and I still might use them in this fight. Meanwhile, if anyone else is looking for lyrics, here they are.)

She'd got a little drunk that night
But it's all right, she was with friends,
She thought, and in the morning it
Would be okay. But then the shame
Of it came home -- she'd blacked out, had
A bit too much, and now there were
These photos on the Internet.

I don't remember this, she thought,
But now her head was reeling and
It all became a blur, and then
It all came back. Her face lit by
the phone that trembled in her hand,
she lost all hope, and all that night
Her tears would make the pillow wet.

It's all my fault, she told herself,
I'm such an ass, they're right to laugh,
I 'll hide away, I can't face this,
I want to die. I'll kill myself,
That's how to end this cruel joke,
This gloating from the bully crowd --
Their laughter choking on regret.

The networks ran a lede next day
About a girl who passed away.
And everybody paused a while
To read her tale. This sweet young girl,
It broke their hearts, they wished she'd lived,
They wished she'd told them how she felt,
They'd put away that stupid bully get.
