6 editing mistakes to avoid

Post by Lunkhead »

Sweetwater has been putting out some pretty decent blog posts going over some basic/foundation tips and practices, sometimes in this format of "what not do to". For any of you who are earlier on in your experience of making music on a computer, these simple details may not really be obvious to you, or, you may think you're "cleaning things up" but it may be in a way that winds up making your music sound "off" to listeners.

To summarize:
1) use crossfades to smoothly edit two pieces of audio together (personally I use the "equal power" crossfade style, too)
2) do not edit audio on the beat blindly without checking if the performer came in ahead of the beat or stopped after the beat
3) do not go overboard removing mouth noise
4) do not go overboard with pitch correction (unless you're doing it as an effect)
5) do not go overboard with comping together many different takes
6) learn to use your DAW's editing keyboard shortcuts to increase your editing efficiency

Cool stuff. Thanks for sharing; I've bought some gear from Sweetwater before but never noticed this section of the site.
