Collaboration: Dropbox vs. Google Drive

Post by jb »

It's a common practice for collaborating musicians to use an online drive service, such as Dropbox, for swapping project files back and forth.

Google Drive just dropped trou... er... prices, and is now waaaaay cheaper than Dropbox: http://arstechnica.com/information-tech ... n-dropbox/

-Google's blog post about the price change: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2014/03/ ... drive.html
-Google storage pricing (works if you're signed in to Google): https://www.google.com/settings/storage?hl=en_US
-Dropbox pricing: https://www.dropbox.com/upgrade
-Box pricing: https://www.box.com/pricing/

I'll be very surprised if Dropbox doesn't respond with matching price cuts very soon. Recently price wars have cut cost of virtual servers in various clouds, lead by Amazon dropping prices regularly. It's great for the consumer, as long as it doesn't force everybody but Amazon and Google out of these businesses... I suspect that the price drops would stop at that point.

They both have good API access, supposedly, too. It'd be interesting to use them as backend file storage for sites/apps. They don't mention anything about bandwidth/transfer limits, so, maybe there aren't any...? I guess I'll have to dig into the fine print.

That's always been an interesting question for me. Almost all of these services allow you to share things via publicly accessible URLs, and they don't mention what happens if that link goes viral. Something that has always been at the forefront of anyone's mind if they are hosting content, and apparently all of these companies just don't want anyone to have to think about it.

Of course then net-neutrality goes away...
