post-rock recommendations?

Post by bz£ »

Recently been listening to this, a genre whose name I'd never heard before not too long ago. Basically long, slow instrumental rock songs with ridiculous convoluted titles, I guess. I am loving the hell out of Explosions in the Sky like nothing I've heard in a long time. Godspeed you black emperor! also sounding good to me so far, but that's the extent of my (in)experience*, so in despair I turn to you, the fine men and women of this fine community of fine men and women, for help-- please recommend to me other artists in similar vein that I might also enjoy.**

love,
ben.

* Unless you count the occasional Glenn Branca symphony; that dude was decades ahead of his time, eh?

** In return for your collective kindness I will do my best to restrain my own impulse to submit a two-hour song for this week's "Die For Me." (Including, perhaps, a "Clearmountain pause" that is longer in duration than any of the other entire songs in the fight.)

What exactly does post-rock mean? If it's things like Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Sigur Ros, and Mogwai, than I have a feeling a listen to a fair amount of it. But I was hoping if someone could give me a more specific definition.

Dear god! There are a lot of bands there that are not at all what I had in mind, but at least they are all good: Gastr del sol, Stereolab, My bloody valentine, etc. I'm guessing that this is as comprehensive as it gets, though; thank you. There's a pretty funny (to me) definition of the genre there as well, because it includes the caveat that the main artists are all "oh please don't label us."

Yeah, I definitely recommend Slint's Spiderland, if only for the song "Good Morning Captain" which is probably the best post-rock song ever. Ok, maybe not but it's awesome.
Also, I dig June of 44, try "Four Great Points." And Tortoise.
Whisper in the Noise "Through the Ides of March" has cello. V cool sound.
I have some more but I'll have to get back to you. I can send you a link to GMC if you want. Privately.
Hovercraft does some pretty cool stuff too.
Can is good but they were around long before post-rock was :) They're usually classed as "kraut-rock."
I like post-rock!

While I totally agree with the sentiment on both bands, especially Can, this is where post-rock as a label becomes as meaningless as Jazz, or to a lesser extent post-punk. What possible connection is there between Slint and Can? Can weren't even post-rock they were at-the-same-time-as-rock, in those terms ......

unless of course CAN are a different band of Can, in which case I look remarkably stupid. More so than usual, anyway ....

Naw j$, I meant the same Can. I just brought them up because I think they laid the groundwork for a lot of post-rock bands. Also, I was racking my brain for some other bands and I came up with Aereogramme and Bedhead.

Good news! Because you songfight! folks are clearly the fabulousest people who ever did fight on the internet with terrible fists of rock and roll, I'm keeping "Die for me" under eight minutes long. I hope one or two of you will enjoy it, though I suppose that many folks won't even listen to the whole thing. Fair enough!

yeah, what J$ said - labelling Can as post-rock is like labelling Elvis as punk. i first started seeing "post-rock" used to describe what was still called "alternative" rock in the mid-90's, after radio adopted the Nirvana format. there were still some guitar-fueled bands making rock music that didn't fit pop's newly expanded horizons. Fugazi, Jawbox, Sonic Youth, the Meat Puppets, and Minutemen were the vangaurds of the movement at the time. All the energy, none of the hooks - that was post-rock, with maybe the exception of Jawbox, who were signed and then dropped by Atlantic.

I guess all labels are meaningless, but Slint and the suceeding "lexington sound" didn't really fit what "post-rock" used to be. We called em art rock, I guess.

Between Ken's list and my list, you will be doing American music and yourself a great favor by listening to every single one of these bands until you're sick of them.

Here's my anti-ken list of post rock bands that are more rock than post. ;)

Faraquet / Smart Went Crazy / Beauty Pill
Trans Megetti
Rye Coalition
Kerosene 454 / Oswego
Shellac / Big Black / Rapeman
Rachel's
Enon / Skeleton Key / Braniac
Sonic Youth
Archers of Loaf / Crooked Fingers
Cop Shoot Cop / Firewater / Barkmarket / Monorchid
90 Day Men
And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead...
Built To Spill
Modest Mouse

Oh yeah, Rachel's is fucking amazing. I was afraid somebody'd tell me they were neo-classical or some such shit though.
