Can we please get multiple titles again?

Post by fluffy »

The number and quality of reviews have dropped substantially. I don't even feel arsed to listen to a whole fight anymore, and I know I'm not alone in this.

The multiple-fight format worked MUCH better, and does a way better job of scaling to a large number of participants. Sure, it has problems, but its problems are way less severe than the problem of having ginormous fights which become almost a full-time job to listen to properly.

In a way, we have the best of both worlds right now. The weekly fights for the people that can do that, and side fights, like Purple Reign. I see Purple Reign as a possible evolving attraction around here. The Fightmasters don't have any added work, and it is run by a Mod here. It's as though it was meant to be.
9 separate titles, 9 separate threads, and a month to complete a song. This is something I really needed and love. When Purple Reign ends, which will be a very long time, we can continue with another artist that irks us, lol. Billy Joel, he seems like a huge prick. :P
disclaimer, Joel is very good musician

The reason a preponderance of sidefights isn't a substitute for improving the main site should be pretty obvious by the name.

Anyway, the sidefights are specifically because they're NOT the main fight, and are often completely anathema to the main fight. Most of them are cover-song challenges, which isn't what I come here for.

Hey - The big hitters of SongFight are finally saying what I've been saying for months now! I agree with what Fluffy and CV say!

What do you mean "finally?" I've been saying this ever since the single-title format started to get ridiculous again. I just gave up for a while since it was obvious Spud wasn't going to change back to multiple titles anytime soon.

I have a sneaking suspicion that when I said I wouldn't fight again until multiple titles returned, I stupidly gave the fightmasters a very good reason to spare you all from my warblings :)

Personally - I still prefer one title. I have trouble choosing when there are multiple titles. I like rigid boundary conditions.

But for me, size is the main issue (hello ladies). It has become quite an arduous task providing meaningful reviews for such big fields. I like to at least review every song in fights I enter. With 20+ songs that can be quite a chore.

Oh - I wasn't trying to take credit. It's just that every time I say I want the multiple-fight format back, a lot of people attack it as a terrible idea, and now it seems that some people agree with me.

EDIT: CR - agreed. That's my big problem with the 1 fight format. A smaller problem I have is that if the week happens to have a title I don't like, then I can't enter. With multiple titles, I can choose the one which seems more appealing to my taste.

I have never seen multiple titles as a problem, considering how rarely I get inspired by a single title.

the only thing bad for me about one title fights is johnny cashpoint's self-imposed early retirement.

you may continue whining now.

Maybe this is intentional. I know, personally, as I've become older and wiser, I try to work less and get more. Spud is a pretty smart cookie, and jb isn't too shabby either. Side fights are like field testing without all of the workman's comp. When something sticks, I will guarantee it will become a fixture around here.
I like the single title fights, but I also like the multiple title side fights.
I have spoken. :P

I can say I haven't even listened to any fights lately because they're too darn big. This week I plan to since I'm in it. But I expect a lot of songs. Would be much easier if there were more titles. Also, I'd love to hear more j$ in the fights. I have been a proponent of multiple titles since we had to go to more than one the first time in Oct 2003.

i'll take that bet. if anything, i think the fightmasters like the fact that they are unpredictable and as soon as something is likely to stick, they'll likely try to shake things up.

the last thing i think spud wants to be considered is predictable. :)

While Purple Reign has more than one title going at the same time, it's markedly different than when Songfight has had multiple titles in the past because 1) you usually only get a week or so to work on songs for Songfight and 2) there is no way to know the Songfight titles in advance. The fact that PR exists doesn't really help people who want a weekly songwriting competition with multiple, unknown titles.

Good point Erik, I forgot about the fact that we know the PR titles in advance. I even mentioned it in a PM with someone, yet still didn't think about it in this debate.

I guess I'll have to write for all of them to ensure that I have a song up somewhere.
