The Wrestler

Post by john m »

Just finished it.

It was very good, but difficult to watch. I'm practically a wrestling encyclopedia, so rarely does anything wrestling-related shock me, but even so, it was strenuous to watch, especially the hardcore match. Rourke did a phenomenal job being the washed-up, difficult to watch aged wrestler that I've seen so many times before. In fact, Rourke looked eerily similar to Bret Hart in the last match.

I recommend it to everyone, not only wrestling fans. For fans, it's fun to look for all the cameos, it's nice to see how authentic every little detail is (well, except for the "title match" at the beginning with neither wrestler holding the belt, but I'm nitpicking), and it'll remind you of anything in Beyond the Mat pertaining to Jake "the Snake" Roberts. (Hell, this could just as easily have been a biography of Roberts.) For non-fans, it's a peek into the sad reality of much of the wrestling world... and it's also just a good film with excellent acting.
