qotd: How good are you with faces?
I'm profoundly terrible.
[edit] Here's a link to the tests if you want to take them too: http://www.faceblind.org/facetests/index.php
[edit2] You should take the "famous people" test before reading the rest of this thread if you want a fair assessment, since knowing some of the answers will affect your results otherwise.

Just for the record, I read that question very wrongly. Twice.
QOTD: Faces I'm okay with, it's names (and seeing words correctly, obviously) that throw me for a loop. Mnemonic tricks / mental hooks are a necessary ritual for me.

In other words, you got 99% correct.

Maybe just people that have a face like this >> have that problem. That's what that guy/girl looks like. I'm good with faces and bad with names. But I never forget a feces.
Unj, where did you get that test? I want to try it.

I'm good with faces. I got 96% (and that's with being in a rush).

Re: 31 of 3 in 9
Most people get 90% or more even in a hurry. I struggled to get that 67%.
For whatever it's worth I got 69% on the 'famous people' test which is pretty pathetic, especially since I should have recognized a lot of the ones I got wrong (it's pretty telling that I mistook Paul McCartney for John Lennon).

Re: 31 of 3 in 9
I actually got Margaret Thatcher right. I missed Tony Blair though (I felt like I should have recognized him but didn't).
I also got Princess Diane and Rowan Atkinson. And of course Patrick Stewart.
Of course, reading answers to these sorts of test tends to improve other peoples' results, so people should take the test before reading the rest of this thread (if they care about the "famous people" ones, anyway).

I typed Mr Bean, but I checked it as a correct answer because it also had it in parentheses as the answer.fluffy wrote:Rowan Atkinson

QotD: 88% on the first test. I didn't participate in the second test because I never remember most famous people. There are few where I bother to remember the names. Apart from that, some famous people I never really stumbled across in anything.

Re: 31 of 3 in 9
Yeah, the test is scored on the honor system, and they obviously provided roles for people who just wanted to be like "oh yeah I had the right person." Which is fine. The only categorical "wrong" is if you click "don't know."Billy's Little Trip wrote:I typed Mr Bean, but I checked it as a correct answer because it also had it in parentheses as the answer.fluffy wrote:Rowan Atkinson

Re: 31 of 3 in 9
Specific Song Fight-related examples where this has caused me trouble (some of which I still feel bad about years after the fact even though I'm sure nobody else even remembers it):
- Several times meeting up with roymond in NYC - he'd be waiting patiently for me and I'd just walk past him until he shouted, "Hey, fluffy!"
- Meeting up with Ken in front of Amoeba Records when I was visiting here (from NYC I think). I didn't recognize him, and thought he was some random crazy dude who was trying to hug me.
- Getting C Hack and Jim Tyrrell confused at SF Live Boston and trying to be funny about the content of one person's livefight song to the other one (and they don't even look at all similar!)
Oddly enough, I never had any trouble with Spud or Mad Dog - I knew exactly who the hell they were the first time I ever saw either of them (of course Spud was wearing his spud-shirt when he picked me up at the airport for SFWW, and Mad Dog has The Voice, so it's not like I was relying on faces there). I think I did have some trouble recognizing Spud when when we met up in Austin though (I guess he was dressed rather conventionally). Of course I have no trouble with that now since I hung out with him all the damn time in Seattle and got used to the various different ways he does his facial hair (or lack thereof).

Re: 31 of 3 in 9
Out of 30 faces, you correctly identified 27.
You were familiar with 29 of the people in this test.
If we exclude the ones you were unfamiliar with, you got 93% correct.
I thought Jim Carey was Donny Osmond. I had no idea who Oprah Winfrey was. And I'd never heard of the Star Trek bloke
==================================
For the other test - where they just flashed up heaps of photos of that dude from Smashing Pumpkins:
Out of 72 faces, you correctly identified 60.
In other words, you got 83% correct.

My dog is great with faeces. He does these really cool ones with a little curl on the top like a dairy whip. I've never actually caught him doing it, but I'm sure he must do a little buttock twist on purpose right at the end, just to get that effect.Spud wrote:88%. I got 87% on the faces test. Most of the faces they genereated for me reminded me of people I know, so that helped. I did much better on the Famous People test- 98%. For Condoleeza Rice, I knew who it was but couldn't recall the name, so I typed "that evil bitch who worked for bush".

Re: 31 of 3 in 9
I thought I was okay with faces, but I actually scored worse than Fluffy on both tests. The famous person test, I mistook Paul McCartney for Elvis (I did get Elvis right when he showed up, though), and typed "Gerald Ford" for Richard Nixon's face. Oops. I was pretty proud of the ones I did get, though. Arnold Schwarzeneggar, John Travolta, and Oprah were all semi-random guesses. The only one I marked as "not familiar with this face" was Margaret Thatcher.

I missed BOTH Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. HAHAHA. So much for THAT romance.
