Alarm in the Graduate School

Post by Niveous »

In the archive, it says Gil Sans won the Alarm in the Graduate School. But, the caption says "Banjo V double header popularity sweep. Again Winner!"

Did Banjo V really win or is there a story there that I just don't know?

According to this archive.org snapshot the winner should in fact be Banjo V.

World of Screens seems to be off too. The winner is listed as Dub but the caption gives it to Drew.

Should I write a script to go through all the fightmaster summaries and check if they have the winning band name(s) in them...? Then we'd have a full list of cases that didn't meet that criteria.

That would be pretty tough, Sam, just because of the way the summaries are written.

Another oddity I've noticed while strolling through the archive is instances of bands not getting marked as a winner due to a tie. So far I've seen that in the Les Anchois fight (Hostess Mostess has the win listed, Pipe Fist doesn't) and in the Hope You're Okay fight (Points for Trying has the win, Morbid Morgan doesn't)

A script won't be perfect, but it could narrow down the list of fights to check manually. I ran a check to see what fights didn't have the winning artist(s)' name(s) in the summar, and came up with this:

I started checking them and the first few are false positives, cases where the summary didn't use the full artist name (dropped a leading "The", didn't mention a collaborator, etc.). But if somebody wants to go through that list and check them all for real positives, go for it. ;)

I'd limit it to ones before 2003, since ones after that will have been entered by Spud in the first place.

I checked a bunch more, and they were all false positives, because of the fightmaster being clever in the summary...

It's only because I had a special guest Front wanted to see again, some 11 years later, but I fear we're veering off topic...

Hey, I just saw Frontalot last night. I told him about the new Frontalittle song, and he mentioned that he'd watched some of the live stream from DC. I wasn't on any guest list, though.

I spoke to him very briefly before the show, and he seemed uncharacteristically nervous (though Vita said that he visibly relaxed when he recognized me). He seemed to be having some trouble with his knee or his leg or something, but he powered through the concert and played one of the best sets I've seen him do. We had a longer chat after his set was over and he seemed to be his usual phlegmatic self by then.

It's kind of funny; I know from having met him on numerous occasions that he's a nice guy and highly approachable, but I still get a bit star-struck around him, too. Sometimes it's hard not to regress that 17-year-old awkward geek I was when I first became an MC Frontalot fan. :ugeek:

Yeah, it took me a few times of meeting him to get over the starstruckness as well. He's just this guy, you know?

(I also had a HUGE crush on him after I first met him back in 2003 at the first Seattle SFL)

Anyway, Lunkhead, did you go through and figure out all of the archive entries that have the wrong winner(s) set?

I haven't sorted out the positives from the false positives yet. Won't have time for that for while.

Off topic, Ken and I went to his SF show. We only got to basically say "Hi!" to him before the show started. Great show! I really enjoyed Corn Mo's set and contributions to Front's set. After the show we were too tired to wait in line to talk to him (he was pretty mobbed at the merch booth).

Hell yeah, Corn Mo was amazing. He was like Wesley Willis and Daniel Johnston had a transporter accident together and then learned to play and sing REALLY WELL.

Ha, that's a good description. I described him as a mix of Weird Al, Tiny Tim, and Jack Black, in a good way.
