Re: Songfight Live 2015 Venue Selection
Another nice looking option. This one might be cheaper if you don't make it a "public" event (just make it "invite only").
As a "non-public" event, this place would run about $150/night. Seems about the right size too.

Not that many of you will care, but I'll have to pass this year. I'll be in Kraków that weekend (the Portland of Europe!). Have a great time.

Frankie: Bummer, you'll be missed.
Jack: AudioCinema is pretty bitchin'. If'n I had to pay for a joint, that'd be the one. Thanks for reminding me of it

Re: Songfight Live 2015 Venue Selection
Ok, here is what I have lined up so far. This place has agreed to host us for Friday night from 6 to 10:30pm. They have foodses and drinkses, but we'll likely need to keep sets on this night on the pared down / acoustic end of things:
http://www.jadeloungepdx.com/
The guy who runs this place:
http://culminationbrewing.com/?age-verified=b68969d05c
Is cautiously interested in what we're selling. We're planning to meet up this week so that I can make the pitch. I'm a little concerned about the shape of this spot as a venue, but it's otherwise a very neat neighborhood brewery. They don't have food as yet, but I'll ask him when I meet about our options on that front.
My dream venue is this place:
http://velocult.com/about/
But they are in the midst of getting their permit adjusted, and will not be able to book anything until that clears. So, that's the dark, (appealing!) horse in the running.
That's the current lay o' the land from my end!

Re: Songfight Live 2015 Venue Selection
Nice work anti-m! Thanks for thank. Jade Lounge looks pretty good. I see people with some minimal drums in the photos. Maybe we could do something like just a snare, hi-hat, and a stomp box instead of a kick. I see amplified bass and one person with an electric guitar, too. Seems like it could meet most of the needs of an SF!L.
Good luck sorting things out with the other places.

I've never been to SF!L before, but I would love to attend. Are the performers by invite only or would I have an opportunity to participate?

Re: Songfight Live 2015 Venue Selection
At some point, Johndisk0, you will see a post from anti/Rabid titled "Who's coming?" -- so they can compile the performance order and calculate how long each set will be.
Watch for that post and put your name in when the time comes.
You should anticipate having probably 20 minutes to perform, no more than 30. If you are in a group with some other songfighters, you can be in multiple sets, but know that time constraints might make you have to include your group in your solo set or vice versa-- depending on what makes sense. There are very few hard-and-fast rules. It's really just "be kind, be generous, have fun".

Re: Songfight Live 2015 Venue Selection
PERFORMANCE TIP:
Q: What works well?
A:Using the equipment that has already been provided is your best bet. Yes you won't have been able to rehearse much with it, but it will sound the best because the venue was set up to use it. This will probably mean you should practice your set using an electric guitar, bass, and drums set up with up to 3 singers. There is usually a keyboard-- in which case, stick to piano, rhodes, and organ sounds unless you have a lot of time to explore the keyboard in advance and can write down the patches you want to use.
Q: What doesn't work so well?
A: Avoid elaborate guitar pedal setups. Avoid elaborate laptop and audio interface setups. It really takes too much time, the sound will not meet your expectations, and worst of all-- you are going to want a lot of music stands for things, and they won't be readily available. If you MUST use some kind of computer-aided deviltry, make it as COMPACT AS POSSIBLE. Basically, come with your OWN CABLES that anticipate your likely scenarios, and be prepared to abandon your plans and do your whole set on a kazoo because all your carefully designed junk is going to collapse in a heap of fail.

Re: Songfight Live 2015 Venue Selection
The other rule of SF Live is that you should be composing a set of Songfight songs. Sidefights are OK, but you can't play just any set o' songs. Covers of other folks' SF entries are A-OK and encouraged. (Well, encouraged by me, anyway.)
Oh, and please LABEL your cables if you bring 'em!

Re: Songfight Live 2015 Venue Selection
Wicked answers, everyone. Thank you for the info. I can't guarantee I will make it because I am already planning a big summer vacation trip, but these two things are far enough apart that I may be able to fit it in Oh, and my set wouldn't be longer than 10-15 mins. I may do 3 or 4 songs, tops.

And yes, once we have the venues locked and loaded, I will commence much more diligent cat wrangling.
We still need a title! I'm inclined to put Cartoonmonkey on the case of making a poster / t-shirt for us, so we should try to get that nailed down too.

He's on the case! Are we going with the Lasers/Blazers? I was partial to kinky and drinky myself, but that perhaps says more about me than Portland.

(I don't give even half a shit about basketball, but I do like the reference to Yellow Lasers...)
Could do "Handlebars and Death Cars" for that matter, playing on Portland's dual love of bicycles and atrocious hipster moustaches.

Kinky and Drinky works for me.
As to what you put on the poster/tshirt though - I'm fairly indifferent.

Of the 2 SFLs Ive been to (Santa Cruz and DC) both were 'private' type affairs. Both great - but it would be good to do at least one night in a public type place if possible (I don't mind hecklers - I like them). The show Niv organised in NYC at the Sidewalk was cool.
Obviously I don't know Portland - but here in Toowoomba, there are 3 places I regularly play at open mic shows (2 pubs and a cafe) - and Im pretty sure all 3 would love to have a guaranteed crowd of about 30 eating and drinking all night. Do you have such places over there? i.e. - small venues that can only afford to pay for live music 1 or 2 nights a week - but would be happy to be offered free entertainment if you can guarantee a reasonable eating/drinking/paying crowd for them? (I assume everyone coming will be over 18, or 21 or whatever it is there?)
