3/27/15 Stones

Complain about your schedule. Apparently people like that sort of thing.

Yesterday, we discussed our favorite Beatles songs, now for their peers.

What is your favorite Rolling Stones song?

"Angie"

But like everyone said about the Beatles, it's kind of ridiculous to pick a "favorite" of such a prolific band. Next month I might have a different answer.

In the 1970s, the Rolling Stones wanted to try and get out of their contract with a record company, so they did a song with sexual themes and profanity called School Boy Blues, a.k.a. Cocksucker Blues. It's a very rare song, and is probably not on any currently-available singles or albums, except maybe a rare anthology, but it's amazing what the Stones tried to get away with! So that's my favorite!

Whereas I had an easy time picking a Beatles song yesterday, I'm struggling to pick a favorite Stones song. I adore the Stones and I feel like I have an embarrassment of riches to choose from. I have to give some honorable mentions to Sympathy for the Devil, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Mixed Emotions, Anybody Seen My Baby, and Gimme Shelter, all of which I considered for my fave. In the end, I'm going with Miss You. The bassline. Mick's swagger. The Puerto Rican girls. "Ch-ch-ch, what's a matter with you, boy?". Such good stuff.

There's stuff on Exile on Main Street that I listen to over and over. Recently I (re)ran across Monkey Man from let it bleed. Holy Crap that is some awesome guitar! - the dynamic changes, the slides - hammer-ons in chords without sounding country. the way the voiceings drive things forward - Monkey Man is my current fav.

Can't you hear me Knocking!
Tumbling Dice!

It's the jam in Knocking and Tumbling Dice is such a great melody and starts off with just about the most rock and roll line ever " Women think I'm tasty, they're always tryin to waste me...."

Sticky Fingers is easily my favorite RS album.
Phillipso, Older Brothers, Semolina Pilchards, Zipline , Thank Glennny for the Frisbee, The Odoriferous Valley, The Worldly Self Assurance, Berkeley Social Scene, Very Gentle Knives, Daddy Bop Swing Set, GUNS, The Kraken Lives, Cavedwellers

Thanks for reminding me of Gimme Shelter! I remember how in the movie 20 Feet from Stardom, they focused not on the Stones but on the backup singers! Wow! I say we do a Stone Fight, unless that's been done!

I never got into the Stones, but I do like "Paint It Black" a lot.

Love the Stones. And I say that Jumping Jack Flash is one of the greatest of all rock songs, ever. Sex, mystery, piles of hooks and riffs, vibe, swagger, tone and more. So there. But yeah, tons of greatness from those guys.
Bringin' the stink since 2006.
