What is your favorite song by Huey Lewis and the News?

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

I'd go with The Heart of Rock & Roll myself, but it's all the worst kind of banal 80s pop that I can never unhear.

I just have to uncharacteristically and unapologetically bump a days old thread to say that Huey Lewis and the News is the shit. I got grounded for a month so I could sneak out with a hot boy and go hear them play at Freedom Fest when I was in high school. I don't care if this dates me. It was worth it. I'd go back in time and do it again. Pun intended.

I Want a New Drug, maybe. I saw them in concert about 8 years ago. They were fun. Days of my youth and all that.
