Favorite oldies

Post by BoffoYux »

To set the mood, I wanted to post a few First Round songs from the past.

This one still sticks with me - Mariah Mercedes started with SpinTunes when she was young 'un in 2011. Now she's a Berkeley Grad and out touring with several groups. She dropped this tune in last year to take 2nd place in ST12 R1.

(Anyone know how to do a bandcamp embed? I seem to not be getting it)

I tried adding a "BBCode" for BandCamp embeds:

Looks like it didn't work. :/

Awesome! Thanks, Lunkhead!

Actually, it’s playing the album, but not the specific track...

It seems like even their track embeds play the whole album, they just start you at the specific track. Is that good enough? It'll take more work and as a user you're going to have to provide a few more pieces of data to get them to work (track id, album URL piece, album title, and artist name, in addition to album id, subdomain, and track URL piece). It doesn't seem like it's going to be terribly user friendly since it will require so many bits of data from the user.

OK! I don't mind making this version the "bandcampalbum" embed and adding the track embed. I'm just not sure folks would use a "bandcamptrack" embed since it would take a lot of work for folks to put in the needed data, every time. But if you think folks would use it I'd be happy to make it.

This was a gem, but the challenge was so prescriptive it had to be disqualified. The challenge was to write a sequel to a top 20 song. Unfortunately, the Beatles classic: "When I'm 64" was never a top 20 single.

I wasn't around for Spintunes 2, but I've heard this song before. (Quite possibly on one of the very good listening party pre-shows.) There is no denying that it's a great entry and a great one to bring up here in the pre-challenge highlight thread.

That one had me so upset it was DQ'ed. I remember looking at Billboard Top 100 charts for every country so it could be qualified. Best I found was something in the Top 60 in a European country for an instrumental cover version.

The problem was - The Beatles never released the song as a single. The judges just wanted a recognizable song as a sequel song to avoid skirting the intent, and Ben never checked it was on the list and just assumed, like the rest of us, it would be one of The Beatles hits.

Tell me you can't sing along with the original. Awesome job with that song.

Being a bit of an obsessive Beatles fan I did know "When I'm 64" wasn't a top 20 hit but yeah it's one of those songs I assume everyone knows, I'm sure it's much more well known than a lot of actual top 20 songs. And this "When I'm 102" is pretty fantastic.

Yeah, I was one of the judges that round. We desperately looked for it on any Billboard Top 100, then any top list anywhere. And frankly, the song was so good, we were really tempted to just say screw that requirement if it weren't such a bad precedent to set in a competition. Since I've been running it, every challenge chosen has kept this example in mind. We don't want to pull another Ben. So I try to be really specific in my wording, present examples, or just give you lots of free reign to interpret the challenge.

Shameless self-promotion-

So when the challenge was "Music to my Fears", I had a good idea.
I drummed up a sketch. I asked Niveous for lyrical help, he said "Nah, you got this"
Then I asked Paco del Stinko for help with the scary riff, he said " that's quite a riff, you got this"

inspired by the Monty Python sketch "Sam Peckinpa's Salad Days", and the band Idiot Flesh, probably the song "Who are the people in your neighborhood" the most, I wrote this song that was in my wheelhouse.

Another of my favorites - Folsom Breakout Blues by Ross Durand

The challenge was to write a 'Sequel Song' to a top 20 hit. Ross chose Johnny Cash. He done good.

Old favorite - "Not a Good Guy" by Jerry Skids. Spintunes #6 Round 1.
https://spintown.bandcamp.com/track/not-a-good-guy

The challenge:
Ceiling Cat Is Watching You Songwrite - Write a song about a meme. (2 minute minimum) (they had 9 days)

A bunch of great songs this round, but this one had a lot of spunk. All from a prompt about writing about an old internet meme.
I liked how it was very simple. Just guitar and layered vocals. But he got some good angst in a song about an evil puppet involved in every conspiracy in modern times.
