Forum version updated

Post by fluffy »

We were running phpBB 3.1.9 which was hilariously outdated. Upgrading to the latest version required resetting all of the forum themes unfortunately (because that's how outdated it was). Sorry for the jarring change.

Let me know if something seems broken.

I can't believe that in the yer 2018, phpBB still uses .gif files for the fucking site logos. And still has no provision for easily replacing said logos.

Um ... thanks, I guess? Some advance notice would have been a good idea though.

anyway in addition to hopefully fewer massive security holes and all new exciting bugs to contend with, phpBB 3.2 finally adds built-in support for Atom feeds, which is great for those of us who still use feed readers.

So in case anyone else has been missing the "new posts" link near the top, it's still available using the "quick links" menu right below the logo.

Um... so the "Quotes" is obviously broken... and there seems to be no "Edit" button to edit your post... as I was going to add this to my post instead of having to create a separate post. This is not cool. Bah humbug!

Huh, my signature seems to have survived. Did you check your user profile?

I recommend using one of the flavors of the Simplicity theme to get back a lot of the links that used to be available in a lot of the old themes. Not sure about everybody else but I got defaulted to the "prosilver" theme and it was totally different than whatever I used to have and was missing all kinds of links I was used to (or at least they were tucked away somewhere rather than readily visible).

And quoting seems to be working now, at least for me.

Eh... prosilver seems to look closest to what I had before... I don't recall ever changing any "Themes" so I assume it's the closest to the old "Default" theme? My profile still shows my Signature... but it just isn't showing up in my new posts... weird... unless it does now? Check down there \/... Test.

Yeah there’s a bunch of weirdness with the permissions on this particular subforum and I can’t figure out where to fix it. One of the missing permissions seems to be “post bbcode.” But only for some people.

phpBB certainly is a wonderland, and updating it is one of those damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don’t sorts of things.

Also resetting the theme was a necessary part of the upgrade too, because it had been like 3 years since the last upgrade and a lot changed in the meantime.

Okay I think things are fixed, permissions-wise. If you're having trouble with quoting, make sure you haven't enabled "Disable BBCode" in your post settings.

There were also a bunch of permissions groups that were causing a lot of confusion, because we had a Mods group from the phpBB 2 days which had still carried over and tl;dr phpBB permissions are fiddly and annoying but it should all be good now. If you notice anything weird please let me know!

okay I am really disliking all of the themes I've installed so far. If anyone finds a theme they like (that is phpBB 3.2 compatible) please let me know and I'll see about installing it.

Unfortunately the old default theme never got updated for 3.2, which is why I didn't just install that one. :/

Appreciate the hard work!

Upgrades suck. PHP upgrades suck to the suck power.
