Free Plug ins
Let's keep a list. Full working versions are best, but demos too:
Full suite of free plug-ins. The Compressor is my favorite, which I use all the time. The Limiter is great to "master" your songs.
http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/classic-series.php
Voxengo has a bunch of demo and free plug-ins. I am addicted to the Gliss EQ.
http://www.voxengo.com/downloads/
Paris EQ. This is a good sounding EQ, you can juice the output for a nice distortion too.
http://mp3.deepsound.net/plugins_eq.php
Digitalfishphones has compressors, de-essers, and some other cool stuff for free.
http://www.digitalfishphones.com/main.p ... &subItem=1
S.I.R. - Super Impulse Reverb. This uses samples of acoustic spaces to generate reverbs based on those spaces. Totally free.
http://www.knufinke.de/sir/index_en.html
Rat Shack Reverb demo, and free Fuzz plug-in
http://www.audiodamage.com/download/index.php
Free directX Flanger, Chorus, and peak meter
http://software.bluecatonline.org/
I used the Sonalksis EQ until my demo time ran out. Very good.
http://www.sonalksis.com/
Creates authentic "vinyl" simulation, as if the audio was a record being played on a record player.
http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/vinyl/
Need a bunch of cool effects for cheap? Try the SFXmachine. I used this for a while even though the demo would cut out. It made a lot of cool textures.
http://www.sfxmachine.com
Simple gate w/ free demo.

I use the Free Alpha synth from Linnplugs all the time. They also have a number of demos.
http://www.linplug.com/Download/download.htm
How could I forget my all time favorite VSTi, Delay LLama?!?
http://www.audionerdz.com/
Sam turned me on to this Juno VSTi. I've used it a lot lately for bass.
http://juno6.gruftie.com/
MDA ePiano is a decent enough Rhodes VSTi. I used this on one of my songs, maybe Space Cadet.

Plugsound Free is a sample-playback virtual instrument.

all the izotope stuff is great, but the vinyl simulator is free:
http://izotope.com/products/audio/vinyl/
lots of free, experimental stuff here:
http://smartelectronix.com/
these guys have a few free synths and effects.
i've only used Ticky Clav (nice free clavinet) and the Cheeze Machine:
http://bigtick.pastnotecut.org/index.php
these guys have a plugin search engine (for all formats and os's -- not just vst):
http://www.kvr-vst.com/
I second Ken's recommendation of the Kjaerhaus stuff as well.

This place has alot of cool stuff. I really like the effect called "choral". It can be used like a chorus effect or it can make some really weird pitchshifting and fast delay sounds. Really cool on drums. if your software has a randomize option try it with this.

Here's one I found last night. This one has good stuff for guitar players. The GUIs look like stompboxes and there is an amp sim. Also for the Pod People out there, they have a midi interface for Line 6 Pod. I have only checked out the tremolo so far and its pretty good. I'm really curious to see how the amp sim is.

Here are some great guitar effects, free:
http://www.simulanalog.org/guitarsuite.htm
Also try here for great delays:
http://www.interruptor.ch/vst_overview.shtml
---------------------
All righty then, here's a page of freebies I found while looking for something to create that stutter effect. Some nifty stuff here:
http://userpage.fu-berlin.de/~thman/VST/vst-eff3.htm
And can anyone tell me how to code url's so they appear as a link under what I want to call them, as pozed to the actual url? I'm dumb....
Cheers!

There are three free plug-ins available from Silverspike:
http://www.silverspike.com/download.html
There is a reverb unit and a reasonable overdrive effect. The third is quite interesting as it's a VST recorder that captures to WAV file. It's an easy way to render tracks if no such facility exists.

http://directxfiles.com/manufacturers/spinaudio_vst.htmj$ wrote:This is a great thread, btw. Can anyone reccommend a good VST wrapper? My sequencer uses DirectX .....

I used that one for awhile and it worked fairly well. The problems I had was that if I tried to run too many vst effects at once i would overload my computer and my sequencer program would lock up or shutdown, so hit your save alot when working with it and keep an eye on your cpu load, if it starts getting near to 70% your close to it overloading. i finally paid for Cakewalks vst wrapper and I still have to keep an eye on my cpu load.
Another thing about these wrappers is, that if you download an effect and and try it out, find out later you don't want the effect anymore you can't simply delete the dll out of the folder. You also have to use regedit
and delete it out of your registry. I still think a wrapper is worth having because there are alot more vst programs out there than direct-x.

Free reverb:
http://www.dasample.com/index.php?show=glaceverb
GlaceVerb® is Dasample's first attempt to implement its works on Residual Vector Modulation (RVM) in a VST plugin. RVM is a proprietary algorithm developed to calculate the deformations, the vibrations and the acoustic response of surfaces and materials.
Imagine a big orchestra playing in a giant box builded with thin metal sheets. As the panels are not very rigid, the box will vibrate according to the energy of music and produce an audible spectral deformation. RVM algorithm is able to simulate such deformations and vibrations and apply them to the original signal.
GlaceVerb® is the only VST reverberation plugin able to modelize liquid acoustic spaces like water. Unlike other reverbs with presets named Room, Cathedral, Stadium etc., GlaceVerb is very easy to use and comes with 64 hi-quality presets designed for real musical situations (including presets for final mix, strings, piano, vocal tracks, drums, percussions and ultra transparent presets for high-end masterings). Maybe your next main Reverb !

All you Mac users wanting some free plug-in action, check this site out:
http://www.mda-vst.com/
They have OS 9/X versions of nearly all their free plug-ins. Sadly they're lacking in the GUI department, but there a ton of them and many of them look to be pretty useful. I just started playing around with them last week.
