I'll review as soon as I get a chance to listen to these, but I wanted to say KUDOS to the powers that be for getting the fight up just one hour after the due date (due time. bah, you know what I mean.) Outstanding!!

Wow, like lightning!

Well, I guess that means it's time to review. Here goes!

Billy's Little Trip

Oh boy I love that happy "oooo" stuff at the beginning. Productions values continue to be through the roof on your stuff. This is a great punk song. I don't have to complain about the vocals because, yeah, punk. Yeah I'm downloading this shit. Possible vote.

Caravan Ray

Heh, those claps are indeed entertaining. Oh, hello Mr. Tambourine. This is really fun. It's really weird how you manage to sound like a country singer with a British accent. I'm trying to figure out where Get a Life comes in. I guess the general theme of the song? Well, it's entertaining, regardless.

Civil Offense

Mmm...Sim City keys. Oh crap, you used the word "lout," too. I'm not sure how much I like this one. Although that change right around 1:05 is nice. Heh, okay, I take it back, this is pretty entertaining.

Cranial Biffida

It kind of pains me to see that I still have 5:30 left. I'm not being drawn in at all on this one. It sort of sounds like you're playing Shredder's theme from the first Ninja Turtles movie. Just a bit, though. Yeah, not digging this at all. It's not interesting enough to keep me hanging for nearly 6 minutes. I could see maybe 1 minute.

Doctor Worm

Oh no. This sounded kind of cool until I realized it was pretty much part of that new heavy emo genre that I don't like very much right now. Production value is pretty darn nice, but I just don't like the style. The vocals just sort of killed it for me. You're hitting the notes and everything, just not the sound for me. Whoa what happened to the end?

Eidolon

Heh, those drums came in and they were very pleasing. Are you playing the keyboard yourself, or is that programmed? I don't know what I like about your voice, exactly, because it always sounds almost like you're regularly slightly off, but for some reason it works for me. This song doesn't really have any sort of hook, which is a little saddening, but it's not awful.

Emergency Pizza Party

There's a name I can get behind. Poop was pretty funny when Tom Green did it. The girl rapping reminds me a little of Leslie and the Lyes. That's entertaining. This song is a little charming, and that hook is pretty good. It's totally the chick rapping, and it's totally just because she sounds cute. Okay, the weird high-pitched rapper was amusing too. Alright, I've come around on this song. Not horrible!

Flvxxvm Florvm

YES. YES. DO THIS A MILLION TIMES PLEASE.

Gawking Urethras

Hum. The tune is cool, but man the vocals aren't doing it for me. I guess the song in general is fairly cool, though. I like the break down in the chorus. I dunno though it sort of goes too long, and the guitar riff starts getting pretty tired about halfway through. Yeah, not digging this so much.

Jim of Seattle

hee hee! I'm glad you can laugh at yourself. This is making me smile. I love this. Oh man, oh man. I'm voting for this unless something more awesome happens. Also wow LONG. Oh man that Caravan Ray impression. Beautiful. I now wish I'd posted in that thread instead of reading it, amused. Oh man SMALL PRINT. That was a beautiful "Crap." Jim I think I love you.

Klownhole

Heyyy...this isn't Jim of Seattle. I don't like this as much as last week's entry from you dudes. I dunno, nothing special.

Leaf 62

I can only take so much metal. Especially generic, though perhaps well done metal. Sorry dude, there's just too much of it in this fight already.

Well, that's it for me. I'll finish the reviews tonight, I hope! This fight's shaping up pretty well though.

Seems that Melvin is singing about Songfight! members. Leaf 62 has some NASTY guitars going on and the best line, the one about getting to the next level in a video game and cheetos being in the dairy foodgroup. Nice 13 minute tribute by J of S. I could only take about 40 seconds of it but luckily by then the smooth piano came in which then told my ears and brain that this is listenable, and not just annoying. Reminds of a Seinfeld episode featuring Songfight people. Klownhole still has the messiest smushy guitars out there and the male version of Courtney Love on the vocals (dips, dives). Dr. Worm that was just freakin cool in a very cool way, great tight mix and heaviness...sounds like the Apple multiband comp in practice.... MC's skipped. Wes Davis brings the fart joke hard on all of our noses...needs more clips of old dudes saying "Get a Life". Actually Wes you grabbed the cover art image imo. And what kind of fight is this, again? Tenacious Geek by the name, I figured this would be annoying. And it is. It's like late 80s CSN with a clothespin on the nose. Don't you two Durand Durand have anything else to do besides Songfight and little kids cover art submissions? Starfinger seems to have a guest vocalist by the name of "Ernie" or "Bert". R. Mosquito continues the Nerdcore Shuffle at SF, but adds a nice guitar part to rock it a little Pixies-ish which I do very much enjoy. Caravan Ray your vocal part would fit into Leaf's song somewhere I think, get on that. Eidolon I really hope you're feeling better after that ENT problem. I don't feel my money would be wasted if I bought a ticket to Your Money Wasted live in concert. Especially if you guys are all chicks. Who's lml_gal? Skip the drums, the song is good without em. Seems like Banarama teamed up with a gameshow host and came up with a Emergency Pizzy Party. Once you started talking about "dick" you should've thrown in some talk about "whore" also. Zinkline and Spinlock are alike in name only, that's for sure. Paco who said getting a mortgage and taking a wife means a "life"? I thought that was what sucked the life outta a man and gave it to someone else? Billy and the Urethra seem to have the "commercial edge" in this fight, except that Urethra's drum kit has no kick drum. I had to finish this off with Steve Durand's "Phish meets Peter Paul and Mary".

That's all for now. So far I'm leaning towards Leaf62 (hilarious + large) or Dr. Worm (large + smooth).

Why don't we go have a nice, romantic dinner somewhere and then perhaps take a leisurely walk in the park, afterward? Whore.

EDIT: Wait a minute. Did Blue just give my review a bad review?

Wow, Boltoph, was my song so bad it actually didn't warrant even a one line review? If so, this is a rhetorical question. :-)

No rhetoric, actually there is no relation...I missed a bunch of people, I know, I know. Don't fret, it's only criticism or comparison. Actually I just played a little game of random listening, while my headphones were on and I had the songfight playlist in my iTunes. Actually your tune, well, it's a cross between Hot Blooded and Rock and Roll Never Forgives. Actually I like the tickley-treble vocal tone, what is that on the vocals that makes it so tickly smooth? And the fact that you used the title differently, I like how your glass is half full, of Coors or Michelob, I presume. Could be Miller High Life though...just might be...just might be you actually sounded like Melvin there during the chorus for a second.

The vocals have a lot to do with it. Cool as something might sound, vocals can really break a song for me, if they are just so. But yes, even as I wrote that review I realized how contradictory that was, but it was the truth. It's my stupid personal fault, though. I guess I actually shouldn't be going with first impressions, though. There's a lot of music out there that has to grow on me.

I review based on what I think as I listen… often I focus on things like production, ideas I like…especially if the tune or lyrics aren’t captivatingly interesting. These are all first listen, first time impressions…through two basic “altec lansing” desktop speakers at work.
EDIT: Just read Blue’s comment about WD40 there… oh well.

Dr. Worm: I like the sound of the guitar, nice and fat and huge. Vocals seem a little quiet, and if it was up to me I’d mix the drums louder too. I like you’re chorus progression, nice and chromatic. Cool bridge. Good rock song. Lead is buried. Reminds me of a very heavy Weezer. You have a nice sense of pop-hard-rock... if that’s such a style. I find this well put together, and groovy. I’m assuming it’s all you… and it sounds like a band rather than one guy. A keeper.

Eidolon:
Not keen on the singing. It sounds self conscious and weak. Mix is very unbalanced. Nothing about the song captures my interest. The drum tone is far too polished and succinct for the rest of the sound. Maybe a fatter bass with some more presence? Drums don’t fit this song at all. My thought on that… a drum line that was based around the kick on “1” and the snare on “3” instead of a “2” and “4” snare idea… Not much here. Sorry.

Zinkline: Again, the singing isn’t grabbing me at all. Some cool snot-rock tone on the “get a life”… but the out of tune bits are too out of tune to be cool. The guts of this song have potential, but it sounds very much like a jam. The mix has some good elements, but it’s not balanced. Drums seem to live on the left… not much here motivating me to do anything but pick out bits I don’t like. I suppose the only positive I can offer on this is that some of the bouncy guitar leads near the end remind me of the Breeders.

Klownhole
: great drum sound. I love the Danzig cheese vocals. The organ…Hahaha! I hear some Immigrant Song in there…this is the kind of stuff that’s fun to listen to alone, cranked up loud.

Spinlock:
I like this. Bass and interesting production stick out. Love the energy on the vocals. That’s how it should be done… with passion. I’d repeat this one.

Civil Offense: Is this a theatre piece? I could do without the “ohhhs” . The weird percussion is interesting. Interesting… song I’ve listened to so far where I could actually follow the lyrics on the first listen. The whole thing is interesting, but not something I’ll listen to again.

Emergency Pizza Party: Love the vocal tones, especially the female ones. The backing tracks are ok, but they kinda remind me of a children’s band’s tracks… Yeah. This sounds like a cross between a collection of songs for kids and some cheesy rap. The production kinda sticks on the same theme all the way through, and not much of it is “cool”. It sounds great, but it’s not compelling. Fun track though, and I’d listen again.

The Mad Vulgarian:
At first, I thought this was JOS. I find this production more interesting. I like “creepier” vibes. The rap is ok, but it’s not as “convicted” as I’d like. Nice production tracks. Reminds me of this mixed Cd I got years ago… a track called “elucider Ce Mystere”… I wish your vocals had a bit more…bite. A little less “I’m talking at an even pass”, and a little more “tude”. I like it though.

Melvin: Cool groove. Reminds me of something… nothing that comes to mind, but something I like. Very enjoyable. The bass tone… sounds like a keyboard. Everything is very smooth. Good mix. Fun. I like.

Pacodestinko:
I wasn’t feeling it until the cool arpeggio riff came into play. Something about where the vocal line goes versus the bass during the verses isn’t doing it for me. I like the dynamic increase… the song get’s funner as it moves along. I like the mix, it sounds like a band. Man, the singing is good, but WAY better after you kick in all electric. Yeah. Great ending… you could almost go on and on with that eh?

Cranialbifida: Is this the new Wrekdom? Just asking. I like the heaviness. Vox are lost and thus rendered meaningless. Neat sounds. Dark. Dreary. Interesting listen, I’d listen again, but not all the time. It kinda starts out strong but then it just doesn’t really go anywhere. Specifically anywhere new. Production is good. I’m way too ADD for this… I couldn’t jam on this idea for this long without pulling out my hair. Hmmm. It’s too long…gets boring. Skipped to the end at 5 minutes.

Your Money Wasted: Punk rock. Guitars are too thin sounding for me. I like the driving energy… I betcha this would be a fun band and song to see live. Good playing, it’s tight. There’s a progression that just happened..I’m gona say the chorus ( a lead follows it) and I liked that progression…interesting. Lead is thin… there’s that progression again… I like that. Is this a band or is it one person or what? A keeper.

Ross Durand:
Watered down punk rock. You need better drums and that guitar not so heavily panned off to the right. Chorus reminds me of Kim Mitchell for some reason. Sounds alright but not doing it for me.

Mosquito: For some reason I thought R. Mosquito was the guy that runs tuneflow? Is it fair to call this a Weezer meets Bowie thingy? Not grabbing me. Dreary. Again, not doing it for me.

Leaf 62: This is not about my friend.

Starfinger:
You are good. I like your stuff. So, right away, my expectation is that I’m gonna enjoy it. And I did. Not as compelling as your hit track “more than soup” but still very relaxing. Some of the falsetto I could do with out. That bass sound works. I like it.

MC Eric B:
Sounds like Eric B. Your sung chorus isn’t doing it. It just makes me want to say “no… YOU get a life”… probably not your intention. When I hear you rap, I think about frontalittle tracks… I’d like it if you sounded more polished…not less nerdy, just more familiar with your lines. It’s alright, but I wouldn’t repeat listen I think.

Caravan Ray:
I love that your stripped down arrangement sounds fun and energetic…not introspective and whiny like a lot of guy/guitar tracks. A good fun track.

MCLocalHost:
I like this. Right off the bat it’s fun, fun groove, good sounding flow. Fucking good first chorus. NICE groove. I’d make that bass line more prominent…but that’s me. I enjoyed this one. Fun.

MedMonk
: Wow. Terrible. Reminds me of Neil Thrun. Of course, I kinda liked Neil, but only because his lyrics were HILARIOUS. Listen to his upcoming downtime.

Flvxvm florvm
: Not feeling it man.

Jim Of Seattle: Man, I was wondering if you were gonna get in it or what… 13:23 …. Figures. Either your songs are 10 seconds long or they are a fucking epic. You sure like those chromatically shifting arpeggios eh… Man. I usually completely love your stuff, but this is kinda silly and …well… man. For not having a window of opportunity you coulda done something… you know. Less cliché. (singing about songfight in a songfight song). Ok…. Is this really 13:23… oh. Now we’re talking about me… Ok. Now I’m starting to laugh, if only cause it sounds like you’re just reading the thread for lyrics. DOTDOTDOT. Hehe. Ah… I’m glad I decided to listen to the whole thing. It’s so fucking retarded, but strangely funny too. You know, I remember meeting you in Seattle years ago… and I found how timid you appeared was so far removed from your on board persona. But seriously, you’ve done some stuff that I’ve listened to repeatedly (like Ants Invisible). Dude. I’m listening to this whole thing…but this is the ONLY TIME. Seriously. The only time. DOTDOTDOT. I may vote for you just out of …hmmm. Question. All these gaps I’m hearing in the song…did you insert those, or is it just the streaming audio breaking up BECAUSE YOUR TRACK IS RIDICULOUSLY LONG? Hard to tell. Nice “JB” voice. Is this how you imagine we all sound??? Man. Did you record this in your car? Your wife has a sexy voice. Make sure you tell her I said that. Very sexy. Heh…you got Jack’s voice DOWN PAT. Man, I sure wish Blue had posted in that thread. That would be funny… JOS doing Blue. Uh… I mean doing an interpretation of his voice. You know, for a guy who said he didn’t have time to do a songfight song…you sure put a lot of TIME into this one. And I don’t sound like that. But I LOVE THE DOTDOTDOT. That’s your hook man, right there. Hang on…gonna go get a coffee… don’t worry, I got the lyric sheet, I’ll be able to pick it up… <goes>
I’m back. What did I miss? Damn, Steaming keeps failing. Grrr. HEY JIM! I got an idea; you should do a follow up to this one. Here’s the title: “Monkey Business: The drumbella years”. (Did you tell your wife she has a sexy voice? Make sure you tell her…leaf says so). DOTDOTDOT. You know, I think you just might have taken a BIT too long to get to the chorus… and it’s a fun, groovy chorus. Well. I enjoyed it. I wonder if I’m the only person who listened to the end?

WesDavis:
I can only take so much guy/guitar . Especially generic, though perhaps well done guy/guitar. Sorry dude, there's just too much of it in this fight already.

Steve Durand:
The song is ok. The trumpet playing is smoking. This sounds very nice. Man, you can play horn great. The tone is so… good. Well recorded too. I think the song could do with a stronger lead vocal to take it up a level. All in all, nice.

LML:
I like it right off the bat. Nice intro. Nice tasty harp… sometimes people blow on the harp like it’s gonna melt if they don’t keep squawking on it. Lead vocals are real good. Carry the song, totally. After listening to a whack of tunes, and especially JOS.. for this to stick out is a good sign. You sound believable. Very good. A keeper for me.

Tenaciousgeek:
Man, those drums suck. Sorry. This is cheesy. I don’t mind the singing, almost catchy. Something about this I like. The drums are so not working for me. I’m sensitive to that, sorry. Too poppy of a snare, fills that make no sense. But a catchy sing along vibe to the song, and the bass is fun. Very chill. Is jack on this? I liked it, but it needs work…not sure what.

Gawking Urethras: Fun sixties rock riff. Reminds me of the Stones. Tune kinda gets messy there. Not bad, not the best in the fight. I enjoy the main groove and riff. It’s alright.

Billy’s Little Trip: Good sound. I like it. Good way to finish listening to all these tunes. Well done. Is this one dude? Really dig the drumming.

Wow. Big fight… of course half of it is JOS! If I happen to have other thoughts on your tune later in the week... I'll share it. If you care about what I wrote, or want to know more ask!

No sweat, thanks for taking the time. I just noticed you skipped the MCs and thought maybe...
My voice just has one of the default settings from Logic - "Male Small Reverb." So a little compression, limiting, EQ and verb. - Oh, and High Life - champagne of beers. But it's a can, not a glass. I often carry one out to my recording space when I go out. But I rarely take care of the empties. It looks like a dorm room back there.
Thanks for the review.:-)

No need to apologize. I hate the fact that I'm limited, barring collaborations, to just me and a guitar. I try to make it interesting, in spite of that fact, but it's pretty difficult. That's why I've actually been trying my hand at lead these days, too.

I can only take so much metal. Especially generic, though perhaps well done metal. Sorry dude, there's just too much of it in this fight already.

I didn't think I'd have to spell that one out...

Leaf wrote:Dr. A keeper.
Thanks for the positive review; yes, all my songs are just me. I've always gotten a lot of comments requesting that I move the vocals further up in the mix, and I even thought I did that this time, but obviously I don't have a proper mixer's set of ears.

Anyway, my reviews were very quick and first-impression, sans grammar or sometimes tact:

Billy's Little Trip - I like this style of music, and the songwriting is even fine (except the chorus), but the recording really hampers the song, and the vocals are kinda... I don't know, I guess they're not that bad themselves but the recording probably makes me like them less

Caravan Ray - good recording, like the handclaps, don't like how the beat turns around in the verse, but I really do like the chorus, the message is pretty cool, and yes americans are at fault

Civil Offense - production is pretty shaky, you totally just used the word "lout," and I really don't like the songwriting itself

Cranial Biffida - you made me download 10.5mb for this? I mean at least the bitrate could have been lower out of courtesy

Eidolon - I don't like the vocals, the music... writing is okay but all the instruments are too computerized (I was going to say "they sound too MIDI" but then obscurity would probably find and hurt me), song doesn't really go anywhere but at least you don't get full of yourself and go longer than you should

Emergency Pizza Party - No.

Flvxxvm Florvm - Benefits from being played right after Emergency Pizza Party, also Jessica just turned to me and said "MUUUTHAAA" like Danzig and she's totally right, I don't like this for the same reasons I don't like that

Gawking Urethras - Sounded kinda neat until the vocals, recording's pretty good, vocals are trying too hard to be Raine Maida (minus the falsetto-whoring) and are instead all over the place, instrumentation is solid but the vocals just detract too much

Jim of Seattle - Will you do the dictionary next?

Klownhole - You have nice guitars, and you are pretty much exactly as I remember you

Leaf 62 - I like the guitars, production is nice, I like the songwriting but not the lyrics so much, good though

LML - lyrics are really forced in parts, always nice to hear a female singer on songfight, vocals are performed well enough (don't like those forced syncopated bits though) but I don't really like the instruments behind them

The Mad Vulgarian - I can't count how many nerdcore raps I've heard that are rhymes over what sounds like I'm walking around the Black Omen in Chrono Trigger or something, also I know that rapping is about posing and grandeur but are you really writing the hits?

MC Eric B - ugh more nerd lyrics, listen nerdcore is FINE I even like it quite a bit at time and I am a super nerd myself but you are not helping yourself with that kind of a delivery of your vocals, be way more confident in your ability, even if you feel you are not that good you will sound better for putting yourself out there, finally the chorus singing is really lacking

MC Localhost - production is pretty good, but again awkward nerd lyrics (and not that good of delivery of the vocals either) and I don't like the beat, please don't think this is genre bias as again I am totally cool with nerdcore, I just think that you (and a couple others so far in this fight) are trying way too hard to fit in as many nerdjectives and forgetting about flow

Medmonk - weird intro, pretty guitar, waited a really long time for vocals and I was not rewarded, then the song got crazy and I stopped it

Melvin - I don't really care for the lyrics or songwriting (except the chorus), but I like your voice a lot, I'm curious to listen to more of your stuff now to see if there's something more to my liking

Paco del Stinko - interesting guitar riff when it comes in, vocals achieve what they were going for but I don't think I like what they were going for, I kinda like the busier part when it comes in (except the backing vocals), the music gets a lot better in that part

R. Mosquito - down with OPP? haha, that's great. anyway I don't know why I am getting the Weezer comparisons all when people like you are around, heheh. pretty straightforward chord progressions in parts, the chords in the chorus are pretty nice, there are parts of this song that I -really- like but there are others that I feel drag it down (clavinet-ish thing, even more nerd lyrics), but the things I like I like a lot

Ross Durand - ...Hoblit? okay, anyway, MORE nerd lyrics, the production is nice, like the guitar and bass quite a bit but the drums less and the vocals less than that (except the harmonies in the chorus, those are nice), that falling chord progression near the end of the chorus is quite nice, but seriously I work at EB Games and I hear about FFXI and WoW enough without listening to songs

Spinlock - I feel like I'm about to watch daytime talk TV, except there's that chanting stuff and that just doesn't make any sense to me, sorry

Starfinger - this is well-produced and funny, the line about telling your mailing list that I am cool was hilarious, the chorus is pretty weird, overall I like this and you are still a very cool guy

Steve Durand - vocals are very good, I like the music very much, but the lyrics not so much, the chorus actually sounds like you are pitching a jingle to a life insurance company, the verses are way better

Tenacious Geek - interesting mix of 90s radio fare sound and 80s instrumentation, don't like the lyrics or the chorus though, the word "butt" just sounds silly now, dog barking and whispering didn't add anything to the song (if not worse), music was pretty generic Boss or someone

Wes Davis - I'm totally cool with you being as critical as you want with my music, so this is not in any way retaliatory, but I don't really see how you can not like emo vocals when you make stuff like this (nevermind the fact that I wouldn't call myself emo but again, whatever), also this seriously just is I Will Survive, I kept thinking I was listening to an alternate intro to Cake's cover of I Will Survive, fake muted trumpet is silly and unnecessary, lyrics aren't that good but vocals aren't that bad, song is way too sparse with just guitar + vox (I am not even counting fake trumpet)

Your Money Wasted - fucking cool right off the bat, love the progression/instrumentation/production, this is really fantastic all the way through, third chord in the chorus is excellent, nitpicking: only knock is (as seems to be the case with this whole fight) the lyrics, and the solo is technically sound but not really well-planned (tone and execution sounds good but I could hear that you didn't really know where to go, I've recorded pretty much that same exact solo a hundred times when I don't know what to do), anyway really really great job

Zinkline - production is really shaky, instrumentation is pretty thin and not very engaging, lyrics and vocals sounds fairly... I don't know, disinterested? as an aside, having a songfight band name that starts with Z pretty much assures you that you will be getting a bunch of reviews from people that listened to your song last and they're tired of listening to a bunch of songs they probably don't like. anyway the song didn't really do much for me.

----

I had a lot of fun recording my song! I am very glad I wrote about murder and not nerdy things (not that I would have anyway). Thanks to anyone who has written/will write reviews of my entry, I always appreciate it.

I liked Caravan Ray, Leaf 62, Starfinger, and Steve Durand.
I loved Your Money Wasted.

haha oh jeez, sorry I didn't pay that much attention to the names for which I wrote reviews. I'm going to stop responding to things here. Today is my day for looking like a moron, apparently.

Nothing personal, though, Leaf. You're a far more talented guitarist than I am.
Am I rockin' hard, or hardly rockin'?
