Fuck Borat, see Let's Go to Prison

Post by WeaselSlayer »

Written by Thomas Lennon and Ben Garrant (Reno 911/The State), directed by Bob Odenkirk (he's in it, too), and Will Arnett's in it. There are literally no reasons not to see this movie. It's the funniest movie I've seen this year. I laughed at least three times as much than at Borat.

Yeah but Bob Odenkirk wouldn't have fucked with their original screenplay like the director/producers did in those others. Plus you're using family comedies for the most part, and everyone knows that you can't fault a good writer for a bad family comedy. And lastly, you actually went and saw those movies? Ha!

JB and RxW are obligated to see everything and inform the masses of their findings; it's a public service, really.

Anyway, when the three movies' tomatometer scores <i>combined</i> still can't pass above "rotten" you know something is horribly horribly wrong.

Yeah but the bottom line is a writer is the last person to blame for a shitty movie.

And yet you are willing to give them credit for a good one?

Yeah. Bottom line is basically that a writer whose script gets made into a movie has to have something to it, or it would never get handed up. Not to say that there aren't writers who are contrived, stupid, boring, etc., but any writer in Hollywood is at least capable. And then on top of that, Lennon and Garant write Reno 911 and wrote for the State and have basically proven their chops as really solid comedy writers. So yes, they get credit for their good scripts but aren't neccessarily to blame for a bad movie when after their script is sold there are infinite ways for someone else to screw it up. And yeah, I'm probably biased since I'm studying how to write for a living, but that's this man's opinion.

I missed this thread when it originated, but now there's a couple more reasons not to see a Lennon/Garant film. Their completely botched screenplay for Night at the Museum, which manages to fuck up a seemingly unfuckuppable premise. And the really bad Reno 911 movie. Blech. Maybe the entire cast of The State should write all their movies.

Oh, and Taxi was one of the very few movies JB and I walked out of in our many years of service. It does have that hilarious opening, though, where a relatively svelte stunt motorcyclist takes off her jumpsuit and (cut away) turns into Queen Latifah! Yeahhhhh!
Aren't you the guy that hit me in the eye?
