Good morning everybody. I am awake against my will. The kids both woke up super early, and since Phil has the talent of "selective hearing", he's still sleeping soundly in bed. The "who's gonna get up with the kids" argument rages every weekend. I usually lose because Phil is always the one who was up later the night before. He's always more tired so he wins and gets to sleep in. Then, when I try to wake him up a later, he falls back to sleep. I hate it.
We watched Trailer Park Boys last night and then Phil worked on Nur Ein. I got really tired around 2am and went to bed (my downfall).
We're supposed to meet Phil's parents for lunch today at the local all-you-can-eat buffet at 2 PM. I have a bunch of stuff I need to get done today, but most of them probably won't happen. We'll be there longer than we plan.
I guess after the lunch, Phil, the kids and I are going to Super Target for stuff. We need diapers and wipes and stuff and they don't have the big boxes at the grocery store, plus Super Target has groceries too! I really want to get some shoes that aren't my Chucks to wear to work this summer. I really need to dye my hair again already. Probably laundry, dishes, other cleaning...won't get done.
In your opinion, who was the quintessential band of the 80's?
For me it was Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, the Smith, the Cure, U2, REM, and many more!

Two of my most favorite bands are (at least initially) from the 80's - Pixies and Camper Van Beethoven. The Smiths and Pretenders too, of course. But I usually picture some synth playing Flock of Seagulls or cheesed out Poison type band as the ones that 'represent' that time. I had plenty of chuckles listening to pre-Sammy Van Crayon, as far as hard rock went, but wasn't rabid about them. Many, many others. Real punk too, not like some of these youngsters today.
I was all scared that I had somehow killed the computer but after opening it up, I saw about ten pounds of dust on one of the fans. This is where the term preventive maintainence comes into play.

I'd either say Iron Maiden or Van Halen as the ultimate 80's bands, for me, though both bands went to shit by 85.
I think after we get home from target I will do the dishes, and perhaps some mysterious "other cleaning."
Edit: I think that 10,000 years from now, Duran Duran will be the top 80's band.

Good afternoon. I have to say that Duran Duran, while not a band I listen to much these days, was my first 'favorite band' and I listened to them to the point of sickness.
However, The Cure would be a band that I still listen to today and carry an influence with. They Might Be Giants and REM are the two most listened to in the Hoblit household.
The Smiths, The Bauhaus, and The Joy Division are also ones that stuck and I catch myself listening to them here and there.
Pink Floyd isn't really considered an 80s band..but they put out a couple of records then and by default i have to mention them.

Today I will be late for work, I will then work at the understaffed T. Rex Museum and go from being insanely busy to tumbleweed-rolling bored back and forth until 5 o'clock. And yet, I am filled with a strange optomism. Perhaps I'm learning to love life for its challenges and hardships. Perhaps I am still half-asleep and am living in a waking dream.

i agree with a bunch of mentions here (the cure, smiths, duran duran, REM, van halen).
i'd also include prince, echo and the bunnymen, simple minds, tears for fears, jesus and mary chain, the go gos.
just got back from a big old trader joes run. i hate grocery shopping but i love coming home from it and having a fridge full of food of my choosin....
they had some kind of parade thing on pacific avenue this morning. i might wander down and check it out, but it's probably over by now.
the local women's shelter held their annual strawberry festival yesterday, and i bought a half flat of the best damn organic strawberries i've ever tasted for $8. i think i might make some pies and freeze them.
been alot of fog in the cruz lately, we've been getting like 3 hours of sun a day for the past 2 weeks now. meh. and it still doesn't keep the masses from driving over the hill to come to the beach, only when they get here it's freezing.

Hmmm.
FIRST 80's band I listened to, at 12, was Duran Duran.
This was quickly replaced by Quiet Riot and Judas Priest, which I listened to heavily, as well as mixed tapes.. then I got hooked into bands like the Police, the Northern Pikes...U2.
And then...
METALLICA.
THEY are the ultimate 80's band. Because they really sucked the life out of rock in the 90's, but man, they DEFINED the average middle class white boy over-controlled neurotic anger thing we all had going on.
I could n't listen to one genre in highschool though.. I was equally listening to the Peppers, U2, The Cure, Metallica, MDC, Kreator, Megadeth, Anthrax, SOD, Echo and the Bunnymen (Jack.. I thought no one remembered them... how can they be a quintessential 80's band?)
You know though, that most people seem to think of "80's" bands as meaning the pop drivel that pounded out then... and really, who defined THAT better than Duran Duran?
Today I found out my drill was shorted out, and I just got this door from the "re-store" (they take things like cupboards, tubs, toliets, DOORs, etc from soon to be demolished homes) got the door, with the frame, for 30 bucks.
But I can't put it in the wall I want to cause I have to re-route electrical, never mind the original builder laid a SECOND footer down half way through where I want to put the door, so I need a freakin jig saw so I can cut it out without disturbing the drywalled side.
I gotta call my brother in law I guess.. or just loaf around... or write something.
We should have an "write an 80's tune" thing sometime. You know, ON PURPOSE. heheh.

I went to bed at 3 AM, and took 100mg of diphenhydramine along with 100mg of caffeine. I'm not sure if I slept but I did have some wonky dreams. Today I may or may not work on Sugar Shaker. I have this song idea which has been rattling around in my head for the last week or so but I don't really feel the spark of creation.
I didn't pay attention to 80s music when it actually was the 80s so I have no input on the QotD.

Ultimate 80s, to me was Kenny Loggins. He had Yacht Rock (natch), soundtracks, Rockers, ballads, and that sweet, sweet 80s beard.
See, Duran Duran was 80s to "MTV" people who went to the mall, but for the real 80s look, it was Kenny Loggins.
Manly beard, sensitive guitar.

Sugar Shaker isn't due 'til Wednesday, huh? Somehow I had it in my head that it was due last Friday and I made sure I had it sent in before I went off on my other errands. Oh, well, at least that explains why the new songs aren't up yet...
One '80's band that I haven't seen mentioned yet is the Thompson Twins. My favorite of the synth-rock MTV pop drivel '80s bands. Got to see them open for a "Day on the Green" with the Police in the '80s and then at the Orpheum or one of those indoor S.F. places.
The leader of our band at church had a close call Saturday - he was in his pickup truck on the freeway and a mattress fell off the car in front of him - rather than try to swerve and possibly roll the truck, he ran over it; it got caught on the bottom of the truck and caught fire. He managed to get stopped and out of the truck with minor injuries, but the truck burned to the ground and there were flames in the cab by the time he got it stopped. Whenever we tie a bunch of suitcases or things to the top of our Suburban for a long trip, I always overdo the tying-on of stuff, but I would hate to lose something and cause an accident like that...
About 105 out today and it just doesn't feel like a day to do anything... better get used to it, though, we have three or four months of hot ahead still...

Scary stuff KA - One of my jobs is traffic related (Traffic.com / Traffic Pulse has contracts with FDOT) and there is a scary amount of mattresses ending up in the roadway. It's almost as common as loose bumpers.
not to hijack the thread:
Yeah Leaf, Metallica is a good mention. I didn't really listen to them that much but I had friends who listened to them nonstop. Motorhead and even Soundgarden for that matter were bands I was getting exposed to while around my friends.
I listened to Mother's Milk constantly in Highschool as well as Janes Addiction albums.
Albums we probably all had: U2-Joshua Tree, INXS-Kick,Police-Syncronicity,Michael Jackson-Thriller

Yep, had all those, well Thriller and Syncronicity were taped off of my aunt's cassettes. I agree with the Thompson Twins, the Go-Gos and Tears for Fears. By the end of the 80s I was 9 years old, so my memories are of what my parents were listening to and not me.
AC/DC, Jethro Tull, Beach Boys and Queen spring to mind.
Slightly odd weekend. We had a work dinner Friday night to farewell Michelle. Myself and Simon, the senior production guy, got absolutely plastered. We were having dinner in this Indian restaurant, we got to the second course of a banquet, and I was already on my feet shouting my head off. About nothing in particular, I just get really loud when quite drunk, apparently. Some of us went to the pub after dinner (i'm surprised they let me in) and we drank some more there. Then we went back to Simon's, watched Wilfred the Dog and got stoned. It was cool.

Yes, the Talking Heads and Peter Gabriel. And XTC. And David Bowie.
I couldn't stand Duran Duran and the Cure. But tolerated Tears for Fears and Level 42, as far as commercial pop went.
Glorious weekend in CT. I'm spending a week in NYC...joy and anxiety mixed. May even make some noise...

Hard to say, band. The styles changed so much from early to late (when hip hop was ruling)
I'd say one quintessential song - "(Don't You) Forget About Me" by Simple Minds (or did the parentheses go the other way?).

the quintessential band of the 80's?
Well, underground bands won't do here
So my mainstream bands would be
Cheap Trick
The Police
Bad Religion
Pixies
Oingo Boingo
Talking Heads
Prince & The Revolution (yes, Prince!)
Morris Day and The Time (the future Godfather of soul)
What can I say, I like the funk punk and all that junk.
