The Lost Sugar Shakers

Post by HamNoBurger »

"The Sugar Shaker" is my 4th fight - so I'm relatively new around these parts. For my previous 3 fights, the songs were posted within 2-3 days of the "due date". Maybe I've been lucky they've been posted so fast, and maybe I've already come to expect (*ducks*) these songs to be posted in a timely manner. But we're about to hit a full week pretty soon, since "The Sugar Shaker" songs were to be handed in. I spent quality time working on my submission, and as of this moment, my song (and everyone elses) is spinning in some unknown void somewhere, not being listened to. I busted my ass to meet the due date, and for what? - sitting around waiting... and waiting... and waiting...

SongFight! is a labor of love run by two guys who spend the time on it that they have available to give. Sometimes real life intervenes and it takes a while to post the songs. You worked hard, and made a song you're proud of. That's great! You don't have to wait for the fight to be posted to share it with people. You could post it to your Web site, or MySpace, or http://www.somesongs.com (which has been almost totally inert lately), etc. In reality, the fight masters don't have to post the songs at all if they don't want to. They could just give up on the whole expensive time consuming business. So don't whine, just appreciate that SongFight! provided you with the title and deadline that prompted you to create your exciting new song. SongFight! doesn't owe you, you owe SongFight!

Ok I wasn't supposed to tell but the cool second part of the challenge involes Spud and JB doing interpetive dance to a mashup of all the entries. But Spuds tutu has a stain on it and they are currently waiting for a new one to be shipped in from france.

so be patient

How Dare I...

Post by HamNoBurger »

How dare I complain in the "Complaints" forum?! So seriously (and this is directed at you SF! veterans), what's the average turn-around time for songs to be posted then?

Average is, I'd say, 2-3 days later than the due date would suggest. I know it's a burn, dude, but seriously, it's just JB and Spud, two dudes with real lives.

You can either roll with the chronological punches, or side with that "Oust The Mods" fella.

But, dude, I know how you feel. It's just part of the magic.

Don't rest on your laurels, though, (or your f5 key). There's plenty of junk to do.

i can certainly understand not having time to post the songs when real life has so many demands, but a message on the board revealing the second part of the sugar shaker fight, or a new fight title, or even a "we're really busy, we'll try to get the songs up by..." would really be appreciated. it would really only take a sentence or two in the forums to communicate what is going on to the songfight community, and i think everyone would feel better.

Think about it this way. They've been doing this for YEARS. Why should they post some message saying there is a delay? It's obvious there is a delay...by the delay itself.

Why should they feel obligated to you or anyone else? Who cares if you're happy about it? Seriously. If you are having a hard time being patient about it, you're already taking it way too seriously...which happens. I know I had a time when I wanted it posted quicker and it was because I was focused on what I had done...without any concern for the people who are hosting my song, making it public to an established group of listeners... I got over it though, and I wouldn't be surprised if 90% of the SF population has felt that way at one point in time!

I'm almost tired of reading people complain about this, because the complaint is centered in the complainer's desire to have their song posted and heard... and with no regard for those who make it happen. So, I wonder how tiresome it must be for Spud and JB to have to justify their lives to some random stranger who is acting like they are working fro them rather than providing a complimentary service... Remember, you can post you're own stuff somewhere, there is no prize at stake here, it's all for fun.

As I see it, you have the privilege of entering THEIR contest, and the audience it provides. I wouldn't rush them if I was you, I'd just sit back and wait...and hope that it isn't some rather awful or stressful thing delaying them, but only real life matters that needed priority.

I obviously realize that these guys have lives. I've always understood that. I get it.

As far as wanting to have my song heard - sure, of course I do. But I'm equally wanting to hear everyone elses songs as well.

These guys make it all happen through all the hard work they put into running and maintaining this site. Us musicians make it all happen through the hard work we put into providing the SF! community with free music/entertainment. (Sure, sometimes entries don't classify as actual music, but I digress....)

It's symbiotic, man.

I appreciate your perspective, although stating that it's "symbiotic" really doesn't justify an effort on the Fightmasters part requiring them to explain the details of their priorities.
Not to say they won't pipe in when they feel like it, but it isn't a requirement of this symbiotic relationship wherein the survival of songfight rests in the happiness of one or two submitting musicians.

There are many interpretations of the word "symbiotic" however it's clear your implication is leaning towards "mutalism" in an effort to explain your belief that you should receive some type of notice, outside of the usual workings of this envrionment... or... what? Any one artist is not required for the survival or benefit of songfight. This particular symbiotic relationship does not involve two distinct parties that require the mutual benefits they provide. You may believe that this is not true, however your only recourse to prove your point would be to not submit. You'll soon find out that it will tick along just nicely without you, however.

Still, you certainly aren't being unreasonable, or a dick about it. I'm enjoying spouting off my perspective, but I am, like you, merely a parastic user of their webspace and ideas.

My intention was not to indicate that you are somehow being unreasonable or dickish, but rather to indicate that I hear where you are coming from as I have felt that way in the past, and I was sharing with you the reality of the situation as I have come to see it.

Myself, I was hoping for a title because I thought I had time this weekend, but it didn't happen. There's always another week... I'm sure I'll be busy then too. Which is ok, I hear JOS is starting another sidefight he wont' finish so I could always do that... (Songfight Orchestra... you are dead to me).

I think I may converse in this manner for the remainder of the afternoon as it pleases me greatly.

For what it's worth, I run a site, that as of this morning, we have 69,555 registered users and have an almost continuous flow of 200'ish active members. In fact, I just looked. Active Users: There are 308 members and 2465 guests.
I'm not bragging, I just want to give everyone a mental picture as I make a suggestion.
I am the active Admin for the site. But I have a life, so early on I brought volunteers aboard. I have assistant Admins that have the powers I do except for the ability to change the site layout and a few of the more sensitive areas.
We have a company that handles all the site support (because I don't know shit about computery stuff) and a woman in Michigan that manages the site operations with her husband, which is what they do for a living for other sites, as well. Those are the only people involved that get paid. All of the sites expenses are paid by sponsors that have ad banners on the site.
I have a Moderator for each section on the site that have the ability to move, edit and delete crap in their section.
I have Site Moderators that have the ability to move throughout the entire site to move, edit and delete crap
I have 4 Admins with the power to ban idiots and move throughout the entire site to keep things running smoothly.
Bottom line, we have 27 volunteers total and I just added a second section mod in our classic Mustang section this morning because it's so busy.

My point: Spud and JB would be less pressured if they appoint some volunteers and divided up the mundane work.
This site has grown quite a bit just since I joined in November 06.
I can see this site becoming very busy in the near future.
Also, I think this site should get sponsored to pay the expenses.

Personally, I have no complaints here. I like the way things are run, with the exception of the fight voting system. But I don't have a solution, so I'm not going to bitch about it. Spud and JB seem like smart guys, so I'm sure things are set up the best they can be.

That is all

No guns or uniforms, but a cool ban stick and a fancy shmancy title above your avatar that makes you look dangerous.

Why do you think they do not? Just because they don't make themselves known? People do all kinds of things behind the scenes here.

Good point Ken, I don't know. I know Glen and the Fluffmyster are mods, but that's all I've seen.
edit: I just looked and I see brad is a mod but Fluffy isn't. For some reason I thought Fluffy was.

Well, I am just going to bed (at 3 o'clock in the afternoon) after finishing up a deadline at work that has kept me up for the last two nights - no sleep since Saturday night. I did take a break to go to a party on Saturday, and to do karaoke with Mad Dog and fluffy, but this was a deadline that first came last week, around SongFight! deadline time, but the work was rejected by the client. I have been working extra hard to make sure that doesn't happen again. Oh, and I'm building a house. Got called in to clean up after the drywall guys on Friday. So yeah, I got a life.

That said, it's all JB's fault. Really.

And by the way, we feel no pressure, so no need to worry on our behalf.

I think the songs go up way too fast and you should take another week or two.

posting your own songs

Post by MC Eric B »

Lunkhead - I just want to clarify something you said, especially for newer Songfighters. If you post your song to your own site or Myspace or wherever, before that Songfight round is over, don't link to Songfight. Otherwise it might friend flood the voting for that round.
