Complain about your schedule. Apparently people like that sort of thing.

I hear that between the sharks and the coral reefs, surfing in OZ is serious shit.
I don't think much surfing happens on coral reefs here - not on the east coast anyway - maybe over on the remote north-west around Broome. The coral reef stuff is more a Hawaii/Indonesia type thing. In Queensland, the surf pretty much stops around Noosa - then the Great Barrier Reef kicks in and stuffs up the surf all the way to New Guinea. (Brisbane is also sadly 'surfless' - Moreton Bay and the big sand islands of Moreton Is and Straddie block everything - we have to drive either an hour north to the Sunshine Coast, an hour to the Gold Coast or get the ferry over to Stradbroke Is. to see waves. I grew up in Newcastle, NSW - one of the great 'surfin' cities' of the world).

New Castle? No shit! My surfing hero MR is from Newcastle. Mark Richards was the guy that made me work my ass off one summer to get a twin fin board because he was carving up the h20 salinity world with his twin fin design that he invented.
Someday, I shall surf Newcastle. BLT 2007

Yes - MR, "The Wounded Gull" went to my school, he was in the year above my brother (9 or 10 years above me). He is still a regular fixture around Merewether Beach I believe. When I was at school, I recall that on the days when big storm swells came in and the beaches would put the 'Dangerous Surf' signs up - people would go down the the cliff over Merewether to see MR doing his stuff out there out there with the beach to himself

Ah yes, the wounded seagull, lol. It's been ages since I've heard that. A name I bet he would like to never hear again. He's kind of a lanky guy and he does this thing with his arms when he makes his bottom turns. It's quite a sight to see.

My first band was me, Lauralee, and Jake in college... we recorded a tape one day, with keyboard, acoustic guitar, and vocals, switching instruments for every song. It was all improvised and all pretty bad. I don't think we had a name, but I labelled the tape "Blackmail Material" and I still have it here.

My first band was "The Harmful Fumes" a name taken from the disclaimer on an Elmer's Glue bottle: Contains no Harmful Fumes. We played Beatles covers and won the talent show in 8th grade with three guitars, drums and a singer.

HA! When I worked at Time Inc I put together a band from our division for the Xmas party at the CopaCabana. We rehearsed from Sep through Dec, and distributed CDs of the songs we'd cover as well as the rehearsal recordings, which were all labeled "Blackmail Material"

My first band was called Article, and it took us two years and three lineup changes to get a gig. We then played a total of four gigs before breaking up and striking out on different projects. We were loud, and messy, and everything a first band should be. I have a few MP3s knocking around if anybody cares.
