Day 29.

Only 83 songs! It was a light day. Only four fights but I made it to 2006! And it may have only been two weeks worth of fights but it included "Don't Think I Don't Miss You" and that's one hell of a fight. It did make me think about my rating system. I know that it's a very simple system- but a good fight like that makes you think: That song was good...but is it GEM good. This kinda how the system has evolved as I'm listening. GEMS: I heard this on my car radio and now I'm looking it up and putting it in a playlist. OKAY: I heard this on my car radio and didn't turn it off in anger. I may like it. I may just tolerate it. TRASH: This song makes me wanna crash my car...jk, I just don't wanna hear it again. But remember this is all just the opinion of one nobody. YMMV.

And how is SF doing so far now that I made it to Year Six.
I have made it through 4870 songs.
I have given 453 songs GEM scores. That's 9.3%
I have given 3182 songs OKAY scores. That's 65.3%
I have given 1235 songs TRASH (or other) scores. That's 25.3%

Not bad. Not bad at all. Here are today's GEMS.

GEMS:
  • Stone Palace by Luke Henley
  • Five Nights in Britain by Mr. Man and Dr. Funk
  • Five Nights in Britain by sonofsupercar
  • Five Nights in Britain by Tiny Robots
  • Don't Think I Don't Miss You by Jordan Seavers

Day 30 & 31.

Started this one on Friday but some computer issues halted it. But I came back strong today and altogether made it through 249 songs. That brings the exploration of the archives to March 2006. What kind of stuff was in this group of songs? BSS was on its way to coming together. Tiny Robots were already around (Sam, Erin, Ken) and now Pipe Fist is on the scene which includes Glenny & Martin. This was also the time period where people got on board with Luke Henley as he picked up wins with "Butterfly Massacre" and "S_____ Rock", (his was "Scarab Beetle Found Under a Rough Desert Rock").

Here's a fun story involving this time. This time period is where you see Zero Effect f/ Maya. They appeared in a few fights, didn't make a ton of waves. By doing these explorations of the archive through the years, I got to enjoy their songs and then learned they're also New Yorkers. Fast forward many years and I was booking shows at the (late great) Sidewalk Cafe. Every month, I would put on a showcase of bands I like. The showcase was called Tapioca. And every once in a while, I dug into the Songfight archives. The first Songfighters to appear: Guess & Check, the band that evolved from the Zero Effect & Maya. And I got say it was good stuff. Here, check out their song "Changeling".

Oddity: Did you know there was a rap feud between Basket of Hands and Posyden? It's so odd. Two acts that didn't make a ton of waves in SF and they somehow got into a feud with each other in entries. Weird.

Here are some GEMS
  • Galaxies Floating on a Dark Matter Stream by The Little Smokes
  • Adonai by Doscientos
  • Adonai by Melvin

Day 32

Fuck all the androids in their android vaginas! Ah, I love that Luke Henley chorus from "I'm Warning You". Today's listening started off March 2006. It was definitely a mix of hits and misses. I really enjoyed the few appearances by Your Money Wasted, definite hits. Somewhere in the middle was how the Phunt and Luke Henley factions had brought their female friends with varying degrees of success, like Phuntastic Phour and Ausgequetschte Zitrone. One of my favorite fails was Rone Rivendale doing techno and at the beginning of the song just saying this is bad and if you listen it's on you. Thanks for saving me time Rone, I have a lot of songs to listen to.

Oddity: Ratt Poizon's "Capsaicin" which is just like 2 minutes of Dumb & Dumber. Fish Sausage remixing Offspring into "I Don't Want To Be Your Friend" is also odd. Same fight, Ratt Poizon's song had an interpolation of "Mmmbop". Also odd around this time was my attempts at cover art. Oh, and don't forget the commercial for an unmade cop show- Rio Mondo's "Shoot For Tuesday".

I've also just realized reached the point where a few big contributors have done their final entries (at least under their main name), like Deshead and Kamakura. There are only about 500 artists in the archive who have entered over 5 fights. I have made it through a fifth of them.

ooh also around this time was my first ever Songfight live experience, which was Songfight Presents in Wayne, PA featuring (the night's host) Bjam, Noah McLaughlin, Frankie Big Face, Brick Pig, Steuym, Luke Henley, Heuristics Inc, Feldspar, The Landfills, TVIYH. God, fun times. I was so sick at that time. I think I had already been in and out of the hospital twice around that time. I still remember that time so fondly. Look at these young folks...

Mar 2006 also marks the first Nur Ein. Wild that I've reached that point as well. I won't be listening to the Nur Ein in this exploration. Maybe next year I'll do that.

Here are the GEMS:
  • Nothing Day by Wally Harbinger
  • Nothing Day by Your Money Wasted
  • Not Like That by MC Kohlz & DJ TJ Maxxx feat. KB Noize and Dolla Jen'ral
  • Capsaicin by Carpetburn
  • Capsaicin by The Cow Exchange

Well, there were a lot of young people in that picture. Bjam was only 16, iinm. Luke Henley was in college as was Jacob, Wren & Tricia. And FBF is a vampire.

Day 33
(43% done)

More trips through 2006 and what do we have in this set of songs? Melvin sampling Jean Knight. Fluffy was back as Less Than Three... and Sockpuppet. The shortlived supergroup Popular Mechanics debuted. That was Puce & J$ (with some help from Plat). Carlo Bruno Jr. was around as Ray Negro. There were SonofSupercar offshoots appearing (Turtleboy, Booty Chesterfield Trio). The debut of Paco del Stinko!!!! Balance Lost/Balance Regained- the supergroup of Furry Pedro and Melvin debuted.

Oddity: The duo of Danyer (MC Paul Denyer and His Name is Dan) and their song "Saving Throw" which is all about saving cats lives by throwing them in fires.

Good little day of tunes. I'm looking forward to next week, where I will probably reach the half way point of this journey.

Day 34
(44% done)

Didn't go through a ton of songs today, only 111. I wanted to save the SONGFIGHT! fight for tomorrow. If you don't know what I mean. It's the last set of multiple title fights- ten songs which make up a Songfight! acrostic, starting at Switch Hitter and ending at Exclamation Point.

What was in this set? The debut of Ben Krieger then dropped the epic "Cable Beach". The particular situation where Fluffy was recording as <3 but there was also another artist named Less Than Three. Lunkhead debuted his collaborative metal act Otalgia. Glennny was trying to find his footing as a lot of Glennny related projects appeared like Zinkline, Daddy Bop, and the Cavedwellers predecessors Katy and the Dwellers.

Oddity: Treachjuris brought in a lot of young artists in and one was Killer D, a rapper who rapped about 50 Cent and there is nothing like the shock that you get when you hear a little kid use the N-Word.

Here are the GEMS:
  • Stairway to the Moon by Ben Krieger
  • Stairway to the Moon by Hostess Mostess
  • Stairway to the Moon by Jute Gyte
  • Stairway to the Moon by Paco del Stinko
  • Half-Hearted Stab by The Contaminated Land Team
  • Had It Up To Here by roymond
  • Hit By A Train by Otalgia
  • Hit By A Train by Pumpkin Buzzard
  • Kim Deal by The Dirty Allisons
  • Cable Beach by Ben Krieger
  • Influential Film by @eclectic spOOns

Day 35
(45.6% done)

I made it to August 2006 and that's important because it marks the end of the multiple fight weeks. Sure there is a little revival of them at the end of 2007 to March 2008 but this is a milemarker and multiple title fights went out with a bang- 11 fights. I went through all of them today plus 4 other fights. What did I get today. I lot of Fish Sausage, Abominominous, Zipline, Wreckdom, and Pumpkin Buzzard. It's like it's own little world. There are 11 songs from UDAHL in this set. Who's UDAHL???? They did no other fights, just the SONG_FIGHT! ones. It's a wild set of songs to go through.

Here are the GEMS:
  • Proud! by Deux Freres
  • Proud! by King Arthur
  • Proud! by MC Minh Taste
  • Smoke Right by Hostess Mostess
  • Switch Hitter by Abominominous
  • Switch Hitter by Mr. Man and Dr. Funk
  • Onomatopoeia by Abominominous
  • Onomatopoeia by Those Meddling Kids
  • No Relation by Pumpkin Buzzard
  • For The Time Being by Abominominous
  • Gone Phishing by Wave the Navel
  • Terror In Tiny Town by Less Than Three
  • Exclamation Point by King Arthur
  • Exclamation Point by Starfinger
  • Rhymes With Lucia by x-tokyo-river-god

There were what, four or five, who did all 11 songs in the SONGFIGHT fight? I was one, and was so proud of myself, until I heard all the Abomb songs. Guy's a rock star, man!

Abom, Hostess Mostess, UDAHL and you were the only ones who did all 11. King Arthur & Wreckdom each did 10, which seems insane to me that you would only do 10 and not figure out some way to do the last one. (Note- they both missed different fights. King missed T, Wreckdom missed I)

I had to double check: I forgot that I submitted "Rhymes With Lucia" under that name too. Regardless, I think it's cool how many people who entered that fight with me are still active. Well, WreckdoM, Sockpuppet, and Paco, but still, that's some longevity.

Which actually brings up a QC issue. I never intended to submit those as "?". They were supposed to be entered with the artist name "ö", but for some reason the unicode needed for the umlaut couldn't work. They were renamed in the file name too...something about non-ascii characters causing problems.

Is that resolvable?

Start a thread about it here in the "Quality Control" section and maybe some day a very very generous fightmaster will try to sort that out for you.

"ö"
Question Mark was so much easier. How do you say it now. Does one say "I like Terror in Tiny Town by Umlaut O"? "by O with Diaresis?" Do you just pronounce the sound????

Day 36-38
(47.4% done)

It was kind of a weird week with all sorts of things happening in my life that prevented me from putting my full focus in on the project over the last few days but I did make my way through 225 songs. What was in that pack of songs. "All Tan" which was a Live Fight. I wasn't at Songfight High & Dry so I don't have any nifty stories. This set of songs had some interesting debuts: Billy's Little Trip; the rap crew Emergency Pizza Party; as well as the goth metal band Cranial Biffida.

I would say a lot more about these fights but I have to run off and go pick up my kids for a very busy weekend, so here are the GEMS for today.
