Chorus uses the Royal Road progression in C Major, FMaj7–G7–Em7–Am (this was the example given on Wikipedia and I am nothing if not lazy)
This song didn't really go where I intended, at a certain point I decided to just roll with it and recorded a Pet Shop Boys style sing speaky verse halfway through, which I'm not sure works but fuck it, why the hell not.
This song is about the current state of moral panic and transphobia in British politics and media, which is really shit. One thing the media does a lot is distort, misrepresent or completely falsify evidence to support their transphobia - a good example is the article from the guardian this week, in which they claim "less than half in Britain back gender-affirming care for trans teenagers" - https://www.theguardian.com/society/202 ... -teenagers. A quick look at the actual polling in the article shows that 47% of UK residents think trans teenagers should be allowed to receive gender-affirming care, while only 35% don't. Take out the 'don't knows' and its 57% in favour.
So I was thinking about that when writing this song and how fucked up it is that people have gotten caught up in this manufactured culture war bullshit

(Also full disclosure - I took a telephone coincidental survey class in the 80's so I know how to do this shit. You only need 300 raw callers to have a statistically valid survey. However, they have to be random. The biases you can introduce to skew the data can easily introduce a pattern towards a specific result. It's not hard to nudge things in whatever direction you want them to go. It literally is all in the construction of the questionnaire, and who is answering the surveys. This popped in my head because of the Republican rules for who can be at the debates in August. The rules are literally unenforceable - candidates need 1% of the vote from a data set using 300 Republican voters to be included in the debates - which no one does in their surveys. They pick 3-500 random people - you'd need a 1500-3000 set of voters to get close to the thresholds. More fuckery going on in the survey world! )

The marketing manager at my last job once told me we can make the data fit to whatever story we want to tell prospective clients. It was meant to be a lesson in finding interesting or previously over-looked insights in a massive excel spreadsheet of data points, but it always seemed inherently dishonest. Sure, everything we said was technically true, but it felt like a magician drawing attention away from the sleight of hand.
This song is a creative interpretation of that point, that you can make the numbers say whatever you like if you are creative enough. It certainly always feels like an outsized amount of power whenever I make a pivot table. Anyhoo, enjoy the puns!
