You should let the inspiration hit next time. It's a lot better than laziness. And I'd be interested in seeing what you can come up with on the fly. Well, not so much on the fly as, "within a week."

I have been playing all of the tunes from this fight and some of them I had to replay as soon as it ended because I loved it so much. I want to get my reviews and vote up now because I've waited too long on some in the past and missed the boat because I'm trying to meet the deadline with my next song. I always listen to each song to refresh my memory as I'm writing the reviews. By the way, great art work this week Samuel Jagoda.

Here we go:
Caravan Ray - I really liked this song because it reminds me of the old Euro political folk music that started anarchy and the punk revolution. So well played and real. The clapping and tambourine keep it bouncy and gives added interest for sure. Good job Ray. By the way, why is it that I can hardly understand you guys from that part of the world when you talk, but you sing so clear? The only accent I hear is when you say "bahstids"

Civil Offense - The organ sounds cool, it gives it an old Motown sound with the ah'ooo's. I like the change of moods. Good job on the on capturing the mood.

Cranial Biffida - Well, I'm running out of things to say about the Biffida. As always, interesting and it gives my subs a great work out. Monster movie music, have I ever said that? Good arrangement.

Doctor Worm - I really love this song. The layers of guitars are great! I like the whole arrangement, the voice, the hard panning, everything. I get a real Harvey Danger rawness from this song. I will say it is really heavy on the bottom and light on top which made me have to turn it down, which is unfortunate because this song is designed to crank! I'm not loving the abrupt ending, but I can live with it. The high hat sounded like a breathing voice at first which felt weird in a good way. Great job, I love this one.

Eidolon - Piano, organ, drums and voice = awesome. I can't but think how this would have sounded with back up singers and guitar to boost the energy. Good job.

Emergency Pizza Party - Tom Green and Rick Moranis had a baby rat. This is a funny song. The girls say the the best lines and have a cute voice. A nice mix of dorky, cute and real, so I guess that's what nerdcore is.

Flvxxvm Florvm - The guitar is cool, I like when the second guitar comes in.

Gawking Urethras - I LOVE this song! It sounds like some of the local stuff that's happening here in the OC right now. This would be great to see live. That rhythm riff is so my style it's funny. Phil, you are coming around and I don't care what anyone says, you are a passionate singer and you have a great tone. I like real voices when it comes to rock and I don't like forced and over done vibrato and prettiness unless it's opera or boy band crap. The first time you sing a song that stays in key all the way through, you're going to blow everyones mind. If you take one piece of advice from me, it's this. Continue with this style you entered this week and perfect it. It's original which gives you HUGE points in my book. It's a fresh sound. Also, great job Charlie and Roger.

Jim of Seattle - This song is great! A great production (except for some mic hiss here and there), great piano, great vocals, smart lyrics and concept. The woman introducing was a nice way to make this song work. The outro was perfect! Good job Jim, and thanks for the chuckle.

Klownhole - This gave me a Iron Butterfly kind of vibe. Every time I hear Klownhole, I know you are having a great time. It takes a lot of restraint to end this kind of a jam in under 20 minutes, lol. I've been there. Good job.

Leaf 62 - This song rocks! Very Suicidal with the talking and kick ass rock'in. The double bass sounds like poop, but hey, machines, whataya guna do? Overall, I like this song. Good job Leaf.

LML - I like this song. It's a nice relationship ballad. Good job.

The Mad Vulgarian - Nice groove. Those nerdcore types should be kissing your feet. Great sounds all the way through, even an impact wrench towards the end. Good job, I enjoyed it

MC Eric B - I like your lyrics because you always tell a story from start to finish. Sometimes I'm surprised you can manage to squeeze the words in the way you do, but you do it. When you do your chorus "singing" parts, I've noticed you always start with a nasaly hum before the words. This may help the nerdcore style, but it makes me laugh every time I hear it. Good job.

MC Localhost - I like how you did your Mom's voice and added her as back up at the end. This nerdcore thing is great for you rap guys. I like the drum track on this one. Good job.

Medmonk - Wow! .....and stuff, lol.

Melvin - Nice bouncy tune. I like this song a lot. Very cool guitar work and the solo is very enjoyable. I can't lie, pretty much all of your stuff in the past sounds like something on the radio, but this one is a bit more unique because it has the bounce of ska without being ska, and it has the chorus of standard emo without sounding emo, so that to me makes it unique. Great job Melvin.

Paco Del Stinko - I LOVE that riff in the beginning, right after "break a sweat", it's so.....me. Then you bust into the jiba jaba part and it starts really rocking. I noticed that you did the same as me this week and left out the "wanking" as they seem to call it, lol. Great guitar as usual. I would have loved to hear you drop the mic on the floor and hear you throw the guitar into the drum kit at the end. You should try to simulate that someday :) This is a day in the life. Great job Chuck.

R. Mosquito - I LOVE the Pixies rhythm and solo in this one. This is so Frank Black like that I have no choice but enjoy the hell out of it. I have been listening to this one a lot this week, probably because I miss this style of music. I know a lot of SF'ers give guys shit here if they're not re-inventing the wheel, but I say, great job!

Ross Durand - I really like this song Ross. The lyrics are nerd friendly, and kind of funny because they're true, lol. I really like this because it reminds me of the Ramones, but with nerd lyrics. If Joey Ramone was Bill Gates' son, this is how the Ramones would have sounded. Good job.

Spinlock - Monks? Nice groove, funky. Who's slap'in the bass? It sounds great. The vox sound like George Michaels from Wahm , lol. Good job Spin.

Starfinger - I like cake a lot.....I doooooo.....I dooooooo. Lmfao! This is great, Star, very fun to listen to and I've listened to this several times. A few times here you sounded like Steve Martin. The chorus is very Bee Gees. Nice work Star, very entertaining.

Steve Durand - Get a life insurance "policy", nice twist of the title for a guy that already has a good life. You should send this to Mutual Of Omaha to see if they need a new jingle. Nice arrangement and smart lyrics as usual Steve. Nice job.

Tenacious Geek - Starts out like Sheryl Crow, but has a strange drum break in the begging that's a tad uncomfortable. The vocal harmonies sound really good. Nice changes that add interest. I can't help but think of one of National Lampoons Vacation movies when I hear this. Good job.

Wes Davis - Kind of starts out sounding like "I will survive" but breaks away into a 1920's clapper vibe with the muted mouth trumpet sounds. I noticed you didn't force the vocal vibrato so much this time which to me personally sounds better. Good job for the lack of instruments. Nice work.

Your Money Wasted - I really like this one. I wish the drums were hitting a little harder in the mix, but it still hasn't stopped me from listening to this song several times in the past few days. It's good to hear some rock'in energy here. Nice work.

Zinkline - Nice flowing song. The synth keeps it moving steady. The music is very 60's with the keys and the guitar fx. Very enjoyable song to crank while I'm driving. Good job guys, it's always nice to hear the real thing.

I am The Mad Vulgarian.

Last week it had been proposed that hiphop entries are more difficult to compose than, say, guitar entries, and I did this song in a day to test the idea.

I don't use machines to drum...that's my drumset. To write this tune, I played a couple drum grooves, then wrote riffs for the grooves. Then I cut and pasted the structure as I wanted it. I didnt' have time to play the part again as one continuous take, (but I did on the guitars) but I can assure you that's not a problem for me. It was just too late to do it, and I have neighbours.

*mind you I don't have a double kick pedal, and I felt the tune needed it, so I copied the kick track and then slid it over a 32 nd note to create a double kick part... then I felt that at 184 bpm my 16th note pattern on the kick was too inconsistent. Again, I could have spent the time nailing it, but I was more concerned with getting the part down the way I wanted it then worrying about proving to myself I could do it... and it was late. I did notice that using the same kick sound made it sound like a drum machine, but that's the price I pay for not buying a double kick pedal. Tell ya what, some time in the spring when I pay off my mixing board I'll throw a kick pedal on my account and we can do this all over again.

Sounds like poop? do you mean tone, or the rhythmic part? If you mean tone, well.. that's your opinion it's probably valid for you.
If you meant the pattern... I'd say suck it, it rocks.

LOL, no no, the song f**king rocks. I meant the the double bass at around the halfway point. That's what made me think it was a machine.

edit: I just listened again. Yeah, at the 1:48 mark, the double kick sounds odd, but now that you explained it, that makes perfect sense. Maybe if you had a slight pitch shift on every other hit. But I know what you mean about time. I had like 1 or 2 minutes to go before the cutoff on this one. I guess you can take the machine comment as you play so tight, your like a machines.

Yeah I went and bought a mic stand so I could stand up and sing, so the vibratto sounds more natural. Thanks! I'm doing a little collab for this week, if I can ever finish the tune I'm working on, so I might have a bit more next week.
Am I rockin' hard, or hardly rockin'?

Well... It was on purpose...but not "real". Playing straight 16ths is ok, but no double kick means... fakery. It's true. Leaf actually faked a part. The lack of consistency wasn't in the timing, it was in the dynamic. I was getting "Loud quiet quiet Loud"...and that wasn't Vinnie enough for me, so I took the first loud and pasted it ...over...the...other...ones.

Man. now you've made me feel all....dirty.

Pretty funny to me actually, since one of my personal ethics, normally, is to make sure I can play what I record., and live with it if I can't. But this tune SCREAMED double kick... and I don't have one!!

That's it. I'm seriously ordering a double kick pedal, today . Damn it... I've always wanted one.

...now.. how do I convince my wife this is a necessity? hmmm. Who needs a new lawnmower anyways...

Glass always sounds God-like to me. Appropriate for a moderator. You got an out-loud laugh from me at that point.

I also like how someone must have deleted a post (or you made one up). I was reading along.

Way to go.

Thanks! I didn't make one up. The only major change I made was that I swapped Caravan Ray's post with my reply to JB so that it would make more sense. Other than that, I just left out a few irrelevant bits here and there.

You should let the inspiration hit next time. It's a lot better than laziness. And I'd be interested in seeing what you can come up with on the fly. Well, not so much on the fly as, "within a week."
I know it is not necessary to let you know this but TG is far from lazy. He was asked by a regular songfighter to submit the song and he did it. I'm sure how un-lazy he is contributed to his not having the time to read the FAQ.

If anyone is lazy it is me... I recorded a song for this fight and just managed to finish the vocals last night... I would have won for sure... ha ha...
