Well it sounds like the Black Crows version is a cover of the Grateful Dead cover of the original Otis Redding song. The Otis Redding version is the best of course IMHO.

Jeez Erin, your voice sounds gorgeous. Marcus, yeah, nailed the Tom Waits percussion (that "dink" on the 4 and occasional 3, can't remember the Waits song... something about a 30-06?). Plat, when I got it I laughed and laughed. Jim rocked the bike pump! Yeah!

Was noticing how so much of the unconventional percussion was played, errr, conventionally. Like they're standing in for regular drums instead of being their own beasts expressing their individual voices. So much so that I couldn't tell the difference between un- & actual on many of the songs.

I, too, am guilty of that in my heinously mixed, last minute redo with correct unconventional percussion. Which was Mr. Bones (medical skeleton), played with a bayonet & scabbard. Dunno if the breathing-sounding air valve of the concertina is more percussion or panicked self-indulgence, heh. After the dust settles and the Round 1 names are announced, I'll post the incorrect previous version.

Not at all, your tune was my "first cup of coffee" listen today. I'm a multi genre type of guy, so I know what I like to hear for my daily mood swings. Your song is a morning song and awesome I might add.

In fact, Ross's song was in my morning listen and I have to say, great f**king job! Sometimes it takes me the second or third time I hear a song to get the genius. I have one question, how did you get your car in your music room?

I listened to all of these last night while swerving around moose on the Kancamagus highway.

I am not supposed to have any comments yet but it is important to note that this thirty-two mile stretch of barely-paved animal trail which winds sharply through the White Mountains is less deserving of the epithet "Highway" than any other road in the history of travel. Two cars driving in opposite directions generally have no choice but to crash headlong into each other, and yet it is a popular tourist attraction for some reason.

Since people seem to want to know the unconventional percussion used on the entries, I will list mine (my song was the piano ballad).

The shaking noise was a bottle of pills (allergies) I had on my desk, and the thumping noise was me hitting my penis against a DVD box I had on my desk. I then added some echo to each of those sounds to make them more interesting.

If I am ever asked to perform the song live (like when the press interviews me after I win Nur Ein) I guess this might present a problem, but I won't worry about that for now.

I thought your song sounded good actually. Something about wine bottles and undone bowties wasn't it. And your voice fitted it well. But the recording was so bloody awful - it was just too much hard work to decipher what was going on - so 25 more accessible entries took preference I'm afraid. But it did sound like there was a good song in there somewhere.

To elaborate further - Mico Saudad - yes the cover-version-type thing did turn me off - sounded a bit lazy. And BK, I just found the song a bit dull - a few of the others at the bottom of my list could have easily filled that place - but I picked on you this time (Note to Steve Durand and Rabid Garfunkel - I know you can both do songs I like a lot - I didn't like those ones - you guys scrapped in for me on reputation I also think Tex Beaumont needs a helluva lot of improvement to keep going)

...but my opinions are completely irrelevant - let's hear from the Judges!

Oh - and Tex Beaumont tells me that he thought that door-knock, door bell, window smash and chainsaw samples could be considered unconventional percussion. As could the use of a techno beat twards the end of an otherwise fairly conventional country/pop-style song. And for safety, he also scratched a plectum against his microphone - you can really only hear in during the bass/vox intro - though you can feel it elsewhere

we went the route of unconventional percussion immitating conventional percussion, but that doesn't mean a lot of time and thought didn't go into the process, it's just how it worked out. The percussion just isn't the focal point of our song. We used smashing glass, a fist fight, coughing, and, although you can't tell cause it's sped up and in the background, during the humping segment, we used the clinking bottles from The Warriors, It's actually the first thing we did for this song. I hope to review these Sat. morning over some breakfast tacos, but I can't promise anything. Theres a lot of frickin' songs here and they are awesome and I'm starting to sweat the competition here a little.

Oh, I just noticed two things in my "Let Me In" song.
#1. In the 3rd verse, it sounds like I'm doing that scratch thing the rappers do. It's string noise from my guitar. I don't scratch anything but my fleas.

#2. I also noticed that I forgot to mention one of my unconventional precisions was a big garage door spring being hit with a wrench. I thought I took it out, but low and behold, it's still there at the very end just before the last ending crash. Two quick hits.
