I wonder if there is a mistake. I was downloading all the tunes. When I got to "Chopped Liver Meat God's I'm Yours", Windows wanted to overwrite his "For You". I think the link is wrong:

LUK when you got it fixed. :)

Sockpuppet's website is sockpuppet.us. I don't get the fascination with Myspace for every fucking thing.

Enjoying these songs, folks :)

I'm wondering why Wages, Chopped Liver Meat God and Timmy the Tapeworm felt compelled to send entries for each song instead of using their energy to create better music.

Wages "I'm Yours" is a good song, and with some lyric tweaks it would be a keeper. Falsetto aside :)

Chopped's "Just as Long as We're Together" holds promise. Actually it's quite good.

Timmy the Tapeworm is clearly an asshole. His "songs" have absolutely no merit, even from a noise sculpture or abstract art point of view. Fuck you Timmy.

Because it's exciting to have another album under your belt, and this format provides the opportunity. As someone who's developing a catalog as a songwriter, but not as a professional recording artist, I don't mind compromising recording and performance quality for a greater volume of songs, as long as the songwriting stays alright. Which, eh, that's a toss-up, I guess. Some of these are pretty experimental. In any case, I still think listeners should, even if only once, assemble all the tracks by the artists who did all the titles, give them a listen all the way through, and vote for best overall album. Of course, that would require another voting page. Then again, listening to all the Timmy the Tapeworm songs, on their own, in the context of the individual titles, was torture enough. I was going to say some inflammatory stuff, but the fellow in plaid just beat me to it.

I swear, I too was going to use the phrase, "clearly an asshole." So I don't think there's much left to debate on that front.

That background looks really cool Em, I like it. I do see a couple things, but I'll PM you, to give others a chance to guess.

I say none of the below to be mean, but just to offer an alternate opinion which hopefully might inform your songwriting.
Lord of Oats wrote:I don't mind compromising recording and performance quality for a greater volume of songs, as long as the songwriting stays alright.
This seems like a retrospective self-justification than a real thought process. It doesn't take into account that by submitting the songs you are expecting people to listen to all your songs regardless. You can write and record as many songs as you like, but as soon as you enter them into a 'competition' like this, you are asking to be judged on what you submit. People in my experience are more likely to respond to a single recording that does full justice to the songwriting, rather than some half-baked ideas not quite realised properly. Also you are contributing to the possibility that people who have no idea of your intentions/background, just tuning into hear this cool purple reign concept, will think 'oh it's all a bit half-baked' and not be so keen to listen to the next one, and the one after, etc, and so less people will hear your future songs, and indeed everybody's.

EDIT: It's like, you diss timmy the Tapeworm for his perceived pisstaking of the concept, but checking his website, he takes himself pretty seriously - he's just not doing himself any favours by rushing out stuff rather than working up a cool soundscape for one or two titles. Are you sure people won't hear yr stuff, and think something of the same? I know, very harsh example, but it seems apropos ...

All that said, Glenn did specifically state that mutliple submissions were welcome, so I guess that's his choice.

A couple of thoughts that didn't fit the last post ....

Anti-M, that looks GREAT! Althought to be more purpley it might be better not to have the 4u, just the paisley pattern with '4u' buried in there (along with lots of other stuff I am assuming but too stupid to see).

Re: Voting - Glenn & Niv, given experience of small songfights, it seems more people vote in fights that have more people in them. So will you be factoring up the fights with lower volume votes to work out your 'winners'? i.e. if someone wins a fight with 4 out of 5 votes, does that make them an bigger winner than somone who wins with 3 votes out of 15, in terms of who gets to go in the myspace box? Someone with a bigger brain than me would need to work out a just equation to calculate it, most likely!

In triplicate!

Finally, despite what I just said to LOO (see above), i have written chords and melodies for all the words for the next titles (see http://www.johnnycashpoint.com/prince.txt or the website). i have certain artistes in mind for each one (including the Loo-ster) who I will contact when i have a workable demo up in each case, but if there is anyone who wants to collaborate to any extent with me, just PM me and I iwll get round to recording what I have "for you" (see what i did there?)

Oh! Hey! That's a good idea! I may try a revision in that vein. I've been bugging Glenn with revisions all weekend, so I'm sure one more couldn't hurt!

Yeah, I'll be skipping most of the "multi" submissions from serious listens. I really don't see the point. I'd listen to Glenn, or Erik pumping out multi's, but I keep hearing "this could have been better with another two days' work" all over this stuff. And when there were 5 weeks to do this that's not what I'd expect.

<b>I'm making the following stuff up in my head</b> but the point of this project was to create a distraction from the Purple Majesty's control freakishness and produce albums worth of songs sharing his titles. I see boat-loads of half-baked songs distracting from that mission. The project is getting attention and may very well get lots of initial hits. But when the over-all impression is "yeah, I saw that thing. Most of it's absolute crap" then there won't be many repeat customers. There's plenty of room to include anyone who wants to submit, regardless of quality. But why anyone would flood it with quickies or not take advantage of 4 weeks to produce something above and beyond their typical capabilities is beyond me. <b>But that's just me.</b>

Just my thoughts.

Some may find this to be interesting. It's a comment that Timmy the Tapeworm left on the Purple Reign Myspace page:

<i>"Thank you for accepting the tracks - I didn't know what all, if anything would be taken. Thank you.

Wasn't trying to come off as an asshole - thought the point was to startle those trying to download from The Purple One.
Since I recorded the tracks within a few blocks of First Ave, I was feeling especially in tune with His Power - thereby wishing only to give those attempting to download his tracks a few special surprises."</i>

ROCK!

and having seen the lyrics for this next go around that johnny has worked up, i can just re-affirm my blatherings in some qotd where i more or less proclaimed j$ the prince (or should that be princess) of songfight lyricists.

while i agree with roy for the most part in principle, there are a few like he mentioned who can pull it off. but they are a minority. a small minority.

my 2 cent: nobody's impressed if you churn out a load of crap, but everyone will be impressed (or at least won't feel like they are wasting their time) if you take the time and create something special that showed effort. if you do that for one or several titles, just take some pride in your output. it's not a demo.

While every thread should terminate with the phrase 'what a goatfucker', I have a couple of questions.

a) Is the deadline of the 30th Dec for sure? I just wonder whether people find they have more or less time in the run-up to xmas and beyond? I am trying to organise some collabs where people seem to have no time until the new year(although, yes, I am aware of the concept of being let down gently :) )

b) In the event of a tie in the voting, who gets the nod? A vote-off? Directorial discretion? Both go through? The one who got the most good reviews? Obviously all of these are acceptable options, I just find myself wondering.

What a goatfucker, eh?
