Election '07
I believe the USA is having an election next year. The fate of the conservative government tonight in Australia may well prove a bell-wether for that result.
It is very early in the counting - the Queensland ballot boxes have only been closed for about 2 hours - but with an apparent swing of some 10% across the country, it looks pretty certain we will have a new government in the morning.
And sweetest of all - Prime Minister John Howard looks set to lose his seat in Parliament! That nasty little man will be unemployed tomorrow. He will be first Prime Minister to have that fate befall him since James Scullin in 1922. It coundn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Well, it's looking pretty much like we are going to have our first woman president in history soon. Just my opinion of course. So the U.S. will be OTR about once a month, so watch out.
By the way, I'm looking forward to the new first man...first gentleman?
....first dude, yeah. I've always liked ol Billy boy.
Good luck with your new puppet, Aussies.

Morning has dawned a little brighter here today.
It is likley that in our next Parliament, the Labor* Party will have a majority of about 26 seats. That is a pretty convincing arse-kicking. Our new Prime Minister's name is Kevin. He speaks fluent Chinese and likes to eat ear-wax.
Even better - The Green Party has picked up 5 seats in the Senate, which will give them a big say in what laws eventually get passed. And many of the seats won by Labor in the House of Reps were won with the help of significant Green prefences
John Howard is gone. Beaten in his own seat by a former television journalist. Not only did the country firmly reject him, but his own electorate as well. That was beautiful to see - and restored my faith in the Australian Voter.
The Labor Party has pledged to immediately** ratify the Kyoto Protocol and to commence removing Australian forces from Iraq . George W Bush should be feeling just a little bit lonelier this morning.
(*no - that isn't a spelling mistake - for some reason the ALP likes to spell "labour" without a "u")
(**subject to agreement from a currently hostile Senate. The newly elected Senate with the 5 Green senators will not sit until next July)

We now have our first female Deputy Prime Minister - Julia GillardBilly's Little Trip wrote:Well, it's looking pretty much like we are going to have our first woman president in history soon.
Yes - we fully expect our leaders to remain puppets of the USA. That is a given. It is just that for the last 6 or 7 years our PM has been less puppet, and more deluxe life-size inflatable vinyl male love doll - with 7-inch vibrating penis and vibrating, rotating tongue. Permanently open mouth. Pocket anal opening in rear. Requires 3 C batteries.Billy's Little Trip wrote: Good luck with your new puppet, Aussies.

I woke up this morning and confirmed by reading the paper that we were now under Labor government. Ok, fair enough. Thats good, the days goes on. BUT I read on to learn that the electorate I reside in, Kingston, is also called The Seat of Death. There you go. I feel so much better.
And so Ray loses another excuse to skip out of the country.

I am currently living in Bonner. This has been the first election I have ever voted in where my seat has actually changed hands - helped partially by my vote (or my 2nd preference vote, to be more exact). That's pretty cool!
Now I don't have to abandon the country in disgust - we will probably move to the inner suburb of West End later this year, where I am currently renovating and extending the old house we used to live in before my daughter was born.
So, if you are in the Seat of Death - West End is part of The Seat of Power!. West End is in the Federal seat of Griffith (Prime Minister Rudd's electorate) and the Qld seat of Sth Brisbane (Qld Premier Anna Bligh's electorate). This is dizzy stuff folks. The Prime Minister, The Premier and Caravan Ray - together at last.
