Carpenters Coverfight?
Anyone want to do a Carpenters coverfight?
About a year ago, we did a Cure coverfight. I was thinking I could host/setup something similar for the Carpenters if I get enough people interested.
Anyone interested? How can you not like the Carpenters?
So here's who's interested and what they are interested in doing.........
BBABM: "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft"
Paco: "We've Only Just Begun"
Jon Eric: "Yesterday Once More"
Caravan Ray: "The End of the World"
JS: "Close To You"
DJ Ranger Den: "Goodbye to Love"
Octothorpe: "Ticket to Ride"
Noah Mclaughlin: "(I'm Caught between) Goodbye & I Love You."
J$: "Top of the World"
Rinky and the Mrs: "Rainy Days and Mondays/Sing a Song"
bgm: "Solitaire"
Sportswriters: "Happy"
Roymond: "All I can Do"
Jim of Seattle: "Superstar"
Just to reiterate:
The site is up! Thanks everyone!

Sonic Youth already won that one with their "Superstar" cover a few years ago.

Seconded, but I don't think it should stop a bunch of us here from butchering some other Carpenters songs.Caravan Ray wrote:Sonic Youth already won that one with their "Superstar" cover a few years ago.

I am unfamiliar with the carpenters, though I'm sure I've heard a million of their songs. However, I have been itching for a coverfight, and am willing to throw my hat in the ring.

I'll do one. "We've Only Just Begun" is one I've always enjoyed. And yeah, that Sonic Youth cover is great.
Bringin' the stink since 2006.

I know it's sappy, but I've always had a soft spot for "Yesterday Once More."

Re: Carpenters Coverfight?
All right! Now we're getting somewhere. I was thinking timeframe, something like this.......
Start picking and learning your songs now (post your picks here so others can see them)
"officially" open this up on 11/1
songs due on 11/30, posted on 12/1
I don't mind if more than one person does the same song, but it's always nice to have that happen as little as possible. That said, I'd like to do "close to you".
I'll also try to keep the 1st post updated with track picks....
also, the carpenters did a bunch of christmas songs, which given the deadline, might be cool to try.

Re: Carpenters Coverfight?
But not many of them are originals. Are covers of Carpenters covers legit in this fight?jack wrote:also, the carpenters did a bunch of christmas songs, which given the deadline, might be cool to try.

I thought they did more original christmas music on their christmas album, but it looks like it's almost all traditional covers.
there's this though.

Re: Carpenters Coverfight?
Most of the Carpenters hits were not originals either. My choice of "The End of the World" was I belive a hit for Herman's Hermits before the Carpenters did it* (same with "There's a Kind of Hush"). I am more a fan of Herman's Hermits than I am of the Carpenters I'm afraid. I did actually search Carpenter's discography in case they ever did a cover of HH's "No Milk Today". I'd like to cover that. Sadly they didn't. But I did learn it was written by Graeme Gouldman who later went onto form 10cc. It has been an educational morning.Spud wrote:But not many of them are originals. (*Google tells me the music was written by Arthur Kent with lyrics by Sylvia Dee. It was originally a hit for Skeeter Davis in 1963)
I am hoping that someone will do a cover of the Carpenter's cover of Klatuu's "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft"

Written by Bacharach/David and previously recorded by Dionne Warwick and Richard Chamberlain.jack wrote: "close to you".
I think we can assume that any cover done by the Carpenters should be fair game?
