Hmm, well, I think I have an idea for this one already. And between now and the deadline I have three or four "home alone" evenings that I can work on it. I'm also going this afternoon to do some recording with a friend of a friend; we haven't really planned what we're going to work on (I think he does a lot of folky / country stuff) but I'm going to aim to show up prepared to record this one if it works out. No, he doesn't play drums, so it'll still have that problem, but... well, anyway, I have something in mind for the title already and a lot more time than usual to work on it...

I'm participating in FAWM, and my wife is going to spend Saturday night in Dallas for a dance trip, so I've got the house to myself. I plan on "feasting" for most of Saturday, and I'd be surprised if I didn't write a "Right Here on the Edge" in that batch of songs. I'll keep you posted.

might want to check the title ahead of time, joneric... it sucks when you discovered you've written a song with the wrong title.

True. My "Under Over" was written thinking the title was "Over Under," but I submitted it anyway. No one really seemed to care. I wrote an entry for "All We Could See At The Window," thinking it was "We Could All See At The Window," and wound up not submitting that one (for various reasons - the title didn't match and also it was the week of my wedding).

Still, if I wrote of "Right Here on the Edge" when the title was "Right There at the Edge," I would probably submit anyway, and not even feel the need to be apologetic about it.

Thanks for the heads-up anyway.

Well, I plan on circumventing the whole thing by not mentioning the title in my lyrics at all. :-P

That is, if the melody would just stop fighting me and rewriting itself. Well, I've got the whole week and I just started this morning. This is one of those tunes that wakes you at 7:00 am and you jot down hazily on the bed-side notepad in a hotel in South Carolina. Go sleep-deprived song writing!

He isn't fibbing about some of that. I write the titles in the play-the-music-box-computer-program that way, as well as 'The Only French I Fry' and 'Over Underwear.' I am quite cross because for Beef Ore I wrote a song about cows and salt mines and had tied it into my whole angsty sturm und drangsty relationshippy thingstry shtick. All for Naught.

Also Chris is silly.

I have a song written. If all goes according to plan, I'll be in with some kickass powerpop.
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

I feel like if I can get this tune done that I can pop myself out of the general malaise that has been afflicting me and get other things done as well. I am hoping that this is the case. I do feel about 40% less morose, at any rate, so my lyrics are looking fairly silly right now. I do not have access to the tiniest violin, unfortunately.

I recorded a demo over the weekend. I'm debating how much of the remaining time to dedicate to fleshing out this tune before submitting. I am way out ahead in FAWM and afford to take a day or two off from it... But that's the kind of attitude that cost the hare that footrace.

yeah, i'm running into that too - how much more time to spend on the sf song when other songs need to be written - but i think sf deserves more than a demo. work on it!
i for one have to re-do my vocals now that i've practiced them for a few days.

Yeah, I feel the same way. My compromise is pretty simple, I think. Spend an hour tonight fleshing out the Song Fight entry, after which I'll consider myself "free" to spend the rest of the evening working on a quickie demo for FAWM. If there's any time left in the evening after that demo, then I'll get back to "Right There at the Edge."

Then, tomorrow night, same story - one hour on Song Fight, as long as it takes to finish a FAWM demo, then back to Song Fight.

Then, Friday night I'll spend the whole evening focusing on "Right There at the Edge."

With that schedule, I should have an actual competitor in the fight, and still not fall behind. Assuming I keep with the schedule as planned, that'll leave me with 9 FAWM songs on the morning of the February 11th - way out ahead.

Bill, glad to see you FAWMing this year, too. :)

I'm paying attention to all the FAWM-ing. I haven't put anything up of mine yet. Or the other things I'm finishing. I should probably stop the multitasking and concentrate on one thing at a time. This would facilitate completion of tasks. Sometimes logic escapes me. Flah.

Fair warning, then, Den: there's a demo of my SpinTunes Round 2 entry up on my FAWM page, which you're not supposed to hear 'til the listening party. So tread lightly.

I'm in. :D My first fight this year.
Started as a nice jam with my 11 year old son on the electric drum kit and me on guitar. Not perfect but cool enough to give it a try.
I put quite a bunch of overdubs upon that track. Couldn't resist using that moog sounds again. And finally that's it.
Lyrically a sad but true story of losing one of my best friends to the bottle.
